I'll tell you one thing about this game. We asked for more passes, a better balanced offense, and good ol' BarneyBall gave it to us. That's good coaching. And Kuresa could do it - no interceptions. Montana State should be interesting.

I've been perusing the various sports news venues and the BLOODY DAMN THING is, the story isn't so much about PSU tearing up an FBS football team and thus winning two games against "UPPER DIVISION" schools in the same season, but the fact the head coach at North Texas was fired at the conclusion of the game.

Reading the post game comments on gomeangreen.com, there are those who say that we really did't beat them, their belief is that their players just gave up, quit playing and let us win.

Well, some of those kids probably did stop putting out max effort, but the outcome was likely settled long before that. Having said that, my biggest takeaway from this game is Thank goodness we are opening up the offense ! We had to do it at some point. I hope Barney and staff aren't feeling guilty for the demise of the other coach. I know they were not intentionally piling it on.
 
Long before our game NT fans were calling for a firing of the coach. The fact that it happened right after the game was of course national news.That doesn't happen very often. And of course those fans would say that their team quit, that we weren't that good. That's normal too. I agree; "opening up the offense" (balancing passing and rushing) made all the difference. Our OL looked good, and our DL shut down their runs (but then, they weren't a very good running team). In fact, they weren't a very good team period.

My friends down south mentioned that in 1992, Arkansas fired their coach right after they lost to The Citadel. I think that is the last time something like this happened.

Oh we beat them alright, but in watching that youtube video that was posted, there's some really "interesting" tackling attempts by the defense.
 
USC's Pat Haden fired the coach two years ago after the ASU blowout. He was fired on the plane on the way home, as I remember. :troll:

Yesterday was an expensive day for North Texas. First, NTU paid Portland State $425,000 for playing the Mean Green and then another 2 to 3 million after firing their Head Coach:

The Dan McCarney era came to an end in shocking fashion tonight when athletic director Rick Villarreal fired him right after the Mean Green were torched by Portland State 66-7 on homecoming.

I went over the basics in the paper.

There are a couple of other nuts and bolts I wanted to get to, none more important than how expensive this could end up being for UNT.

I read through McCarney’s contract late tonight. The way I read it is that UNT will have to pay out his base salary of $600,000 a year in addition to some of his incentives. The contract was amended after UNT won the Heart of Dallas Bowl to run through early 2019.

It looks like UNT will also have to pay out a prorated portion of season completion payments and radio/TV stipends, which tacks on some additional money

Add it all up and it lands in the ballpark of between $2 million and $3 million, depending on the way things all work out. Now that I have had a time to take a closer look, it might be closer to $2 million.

Granted, there is a mitigation clause in there, but what if McCarney cites health issues and retires?

It could get steep for UNT.

McCarney expressed confidence in his assistant coaches to guide the program going forward without him. It’s going to be a tough, short week before UNT faces Western Kentucky on Thursday. It’s a national television game, which couldn’t come at a worse time.

Here are my three takeaways from the weekend in college football ...

-- Portland State has to be one of the best stories in college football.

The cash-strapped Vikings and interim coach Bruce Barnum went to North Texas Saturday and kicked the snot of the FBS Mean Green. Clearly, Barnum is onto something.

The victory makes PSU 2-0 over FBS opposition. And, in what is a good sign for the rest of the season, the Vikings threw ball effectively. If they can stay balanced on offense, they can make some noise in the Big Sky Conference.
 
Sounds like I again missed one hell of a game. And with that big a margin of victory, too.

What's weird is that UNT looked really, really good last year. Not that it would make much of a difference now, but I have a hard time believing that all of their good players would have left after last year. I caught a part of one of their games last season, and they hung up 70 points on a conference foe (I may be mistaken on that, but I know they scored 70+). So that makes this even more of a surprise.

They beat Nicholis State, 77-3, last year then dropped the next 4 games last year.
