Northern Arizona at Portland State

Pretty big game in my opinion for the Nigel Burton era.

Starting out 1-0 in BSC play was a bit more easy last season with ISU at home. A 1-0 start against a NAU team that hasn't given up a lot on the ground in two games this season may show that we are truly moving the program in the right direction.

Big Sky Play Opens With Lumberjacks Visiting Vikings

I have no idea what to expect from the Lumberjacks this season. Saw the game vs. U of Arizona in Tucson. NAU held tough for a half then got rolled (predictably) in the second half against a superior team. Then they whooped up on Division II Fort Lewis last weekend. This yearly wait to see a comparably talented team til the 3rd week stinks.

NAU is young, especially on the defensive side. Their defensive dominance vs. the running game, I fear, is smoke and mirrors due to the fact that U of Arizona runs a pass heavy offense and that Fort Lewis was down so early in the game that it was not a focus of their offense. PSU will get their yards in the trenches. Grossart (qb) has shown some panache early on and seems quite accurate. Doesn't seem to have the arm strength of past qb's but I've only seen him play in two games. Strengths of NAU's team seem to be their run game, special teams (although kicking had some rough spots last weekend) and their receiving corps has started well this season.

Look forward to internet radio and bigskytv.org this Saturday. Got a few NAU alum friends in Portland. I need to get up there for a visit and an NAU-PSU football/basketball game.

I was wondering about those defensive rushing numbers. Makes sense given UA's offensive scheme. In my opinion, the outcome of the game will rest on PSU's ability to successfully move the ball on the ground.
 
If NAU has a good passing attack, Shead and Co. will have their hands full. We also need to run the ball effectively to keep their offense off the field.

Good gawd people. Show up. Bad crowd yet again.

Few comments on the game:

-I liked the early tactics of trying to hit the WRs on one on one coverage early, it really opened up the run.

-Drops by WRs prevented a blowout win. QB puts the ball in your hands and you need to catch it.

-Kick coverage sucked ass today.

-I'm not sure if I hate the pass call or just the pass on that 2nd half INT that CK threw. Barf.

-There was some terrible, and I mean terrible, PI calls on us tonight. Enough to alter the game.

Meh. 2-0, 1-0. I'll take it.
 
The referees blew a HUGE call that almost cost the Viks the game. As the Jacks were trying to spike the ball to stop the clock before the final field goal attempt, their qb went to a knee to get the bad snap. With no timeouts left, that should have ended that play and left the clock running with no way to set up for a field goal in time. Referees allowed him to stand up and spike the ball to stop the clock. After watching it again on tv, I now see why Burton was so upset. But luckily we get to talk about a victory and not how we lost on a horrible call.

And, if the post-victory chant is a tradition that is continuing, someone needs to get the DJ to turn off the music so the chant can fill the stadium!

We are paying the price for putting an awful product on the field for the last 4 years. Why would Portland sports fans come out to watch what PSU has put on the field under Glanville and Burton? Hope Burton can turn it around.

Good idea in theory, but I am not digging it. I don't like not ever being able to hear what is being said. Kinda like the fact that clearly no one knew they were on "kiss cam" yesterday? haha
