Northern Arizona Thread

Really it's a hyperextension. I have had one since high school. I re-aggravate it about every 6 months. It hurts like a bitch.

Jesus, that wkipedia article is sobering. Who'd think something as innocuous sounding as "turf toe" could lay you up so long? They claim they can tape the toe "with difficulty". Hope they can make do without Tyler for a month or two.

It's not always a two month injury. He could play in a few weeks with a protective shoe. However, he wouldn't be at full speed if he did.

PSU Vikings
The Portland Tribune, Oct 5, 2007

Next: Northern Arizona (1-3, 1-1) at Portland State (2-3, 2-0), 1:35 p.m., PGE Park, KTRO (910 AM)

• Portland State is looking for its first winning streak of the season. Northern Arizona lost last month 45-24 at Arizona and 34-21 at Appalachian State. … The Vikings are coming off a 28-21 win at Eastern Washington. But poll voters put EWU 27th and PSU 38th this week. Huh?

• The Viks’ starting offensive left tackle, Cody Feakin, had a cast on one hand, similar to the one worn by guard Moses Punzal.

• NAU starters include receiver Ryan Rauschert (Junction City), right offensive tackle Ryne Holstrom (West Linn) and kicker-punter Robbie Dehaze (Sherwood). Coach Jerome Souers calls Rauschert “an emerging star.”

Two freshmen from Grant High, defensive end Brandon Vance and strong safety Kasseem Osheroff, are also playing key roles.

“Kasseem has taken a lot of snaps,” Souers says. “He’s a very talented young man. Brandon has played a lot on special teams.

Freshman offensive tackle Alex Mott (Barlow) is a likely redshirt.

• The biggest week of the season for the PSU program could come after the NAU game. It’s a bye week, which means the coaches will have extra time to recruit.

Wouldn’t offensive coordinator Mouse Davis like to find a quarterback like San Diego State’s Kevin O’Connell to plug into the run-and-shoot?

Even more so, how about a carload of receivers and slotbacks?

“I’m sure there’s several players in the state we haven’t yet nailed that have the potential to be very good slots for us,” Davis says.

The Lumberjacks have split their first two Big Sky games, losing their most recent to Sacramento State 39-9 last weekend. During the game, Northern Arizona's junior starting quarterback Lance Kriesien was injured, and his status is unknown for Saturday's matchup with Portland State.

Northern Arizona will lean heavily on its two running backs to generate offense. Alex Henderson and Lionel Scott have combined for 103 carries for 586 yards and four touchdowns this year. The Lumberjacks are second in rushing in the Big Sky, averaging 184.6 yards per game.

An elusive runner in his own right, Kriesien has also bolstered the rushing attack, compiling 261 yards on 56 carries. This three-headed ground game means head coach Jerry Glanville's defense will need to be at its best to contain the Lumberjacks' explosive runners.

Glanville's defensive unit has held opponents to just 113.2 rushing yards per game, placing the Vikings second in the Big Sky. With the Lumberjacks' propensity to run the ball, currently the conference leader for carries, the Vikings should be especially focused on stopping the run first and thinking pass defense second.

Senior quarterback Brian White seems comfortable throwing in the run-and-shoot offense of late, as he was honored with the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week award for a 329-yard, three-touchdown performance against Eastern Washington last Saturday.

On offense, the Vikings' game plan will continue to be throwing the ball and moving the chains. This may not be easy though, as Northern Arizona has one of the top pass defenses in the Big Sky.

The Lumberjacks are third in total defense, and top corner K.J. Gerard has hauled in four interceptions. Moving the ball should not be difficult for the Vikings' powerful offense, but making mistakes against this defense will not be easy to overcome.

I'm really feeling confident in our passing attack now. I think this game will be a win as long as the defense shows up. Anybody seen or heard an attendance projection for this weekend?

PM showers tomorrow. Have to wonder whether or not they'll hold off until late. I'm confident with or without rain because of our success running last week. I don't think there's any reason to believe the same guys won't be successful as last week. They gave up big games to the run and pass against Sac, so I see White going for 400, Nee for 100.

I'll call your 400 Whites and up your Nees to 200!

Chili is simmering on the stove for the tailgate tomorrow. I'm pumped for this game. More so than the UC Davis game since it's a big BSC game. I think the rain will hold off and we'll have one heck of a great game tomorrow.

Great Marty. Got our tickets in the reserved section. I have been on pins and needles and according to my wife a total wreck waiting to get on the plane in Texas. But we got here around midnight, got to bed at the hotel around 1:30, got an ok nights and will a better one tonight. Looking forward to it.

Looks like both PSU and EWU lost tough ones today. My condolences, I think both teams will win some more guys before these season is over, though.

F-that. This game loses tons of possible fans. Just another reason not to go for two. Jerry is trying to get people to the stadium, then he sells them out. You waste great games by Kirkland, and McCrae. The defense aside from Dorsey, Senn, and McCrae absolutely fell apart after Condrew Allen's injury. PSU was clearly the better team, and Glanville just blew it.

Seemed to me like fans were having fun. We lost, yes. IT hurt, yes. But, hell, another exciting game at PGE Park. I loved it.

Even though we lost that was exciting. I don't think we lose any fans losing that game. I want Timber Jim back at one of our games. He gets the crowd going. Our cheerleaders tried but were constantly muffled by the drum line. Some one needs to coordinate their actions.

Another thing the drumline has to learn is not to make all the noise when the Home team ( PSU) is running an offensive play.

I am really disappointed in JG's decision. Everybody in my section was debating it before PSU scored the last touchdown and I still think you go for the tie at home and the win on the road. My attitude at this point is summed up by one question - When does basketball season start?
