In the first go around, we handled their guards well for most of the game and got their bigs in foul trouble by going at them.

On their floor, we may not get calls when stuff happens. We all know how intimidated some of our young BSC refs get in these small gyms. I think that we should expect things to not go our way very often. The keys to winning on the road are taking care of the ball and rebounding. I'm not too worried about the rebounding, so that leaves not turning it over too much. Less than 12 TOs and we win. More than 12 and it will come down to shooting. We can still win that game, but we would need to shoot a much higher percentage than dem Bears. :coffee:

Cubbies love to play the Cats. I'm guessing the Hancock will have one of its biggest crowds of the season on Thursday night to watch the game. I went last year and the UNCO ticket office manager told me it was always one of the best attended games of the season. They really look forward to Weber coming to town. Being on a Thursday night might keep the attendance a bit smaller though.

After losing 4 in a row, the Bears have won their last 4, including 2 squeakers at home over Mont St and ND.
Montana did beat them at their place by 7.

Not going to rip on UNCO's winning streak. They went to Cedar and Flagstaff and pulled out a couple of good wins. We had trouble with NAU at home last week, so getting a sweep isn't something to sniff at. I expect the Cats to go on that road trip and get a sweep too. Gotta play better than they did last Thursday to do that.

Anyway, it looks like UNCO is depending on a three guard lineup to do their damage. Their bigs aren't the most talented (we made them look really good), but they are getting enough production from them. I would have expected UND to have beaten UNCO pretty handily, but they ended up losing by 1 on Saturday. UND didn't get a lot of production out of Crandall, which might have been the biggest reason for their loss.

UNCO is using a four guard rotation of Wilson, Johnson, Davis and Anglin to do their damage. If I were Rahe, I would mix up defenses often on the cubbies. Keep them guessing. Start out the game in a 1-3-1 and then go to man after three or four made baskets, and then jump into a 3-2. UNCO is going to use a high screen to roll off of (an attempt at the pick and roll) with our man and try to drive to the hole. If they don't get in, then they will kick it out. I like the 1-3-1 because it will push them away from the arch and force them out of their flow. Their bigs aren't the best athletes, but are decent shooters, so that is the only real concern for me. Tanner Morgan is their best big. I say go right at him all game. We need to stay in front and be able to cut off the drives of the cubbie guards. In Ogden it was a sloppy game with waaay too many fouls. Lots of ticky tack fouls on drives. Frustrating to watch games that come down to foul shooting and that is happening too much in the sky this season. Anyway, I feel mixing up defenses will keep the cubs guessing and will really limit their offensive production.

Of course, we will see Joel doubled all game. I don't understand why Rahe won't pull our other big out a bit and run guards down the middle for easy layups. Maybe Joel can't make the pass to a cutting player? It is easier to make a skip pass for Joel? Who knows...I hate how nobody moves once Joel is doubled. A high screen with a guy cutting into the key seems like a great way to break the double teams. Great passing and movement should do it. But instead, I'm sure we will see three guys camping out on the three point line and a guard trying to guard either Braxton or Hill. Gotta get the ball to one of those guys.

What I think we will see...more full court press, zone, and Joel getting doubled and beat up. Best way to beat Weber.

UNC has won 4 straight and they wouldn't go away in Ogden.....so I'm surprised to see us as 5pt favorites. This road trip is sweep-able; but I expect a struggle.

weber is 8pt fav.

If UNC uses the 4 guard lineup, I expect that Hill and Williams may be bigger factors in this game. Personally, I think it is harder for them to match up with us than for us to match up with them. We have some fairly athletic bigs that seem more comfortable handling that situation. The only one I would be concerned with would be Zack, if he had to chase his man around the three point line. We can adjust to about anything they want to throw at us. Where we have more trouble is when teams play with big wings. We don't see it that much in the BSC. That is why Williams is going to be such a load to handle next year at the 3 spot. I expect that next years offence will be tweaked to compliment his special skills. :coffee:

Still waiting to see if we will ever dominate the middle. With our size advantage and talent advantage I'd think so, but nope. We are still waiting, while we continue to jack up threes.

Game Watcher Observations
1. Jeremy Senglin cannot spell the word "defense"! Its disgusting to watch him play defense.
2. No game plan to work the ball inside at all. It is the just jack the three's and hope enough fall offense. The whole offensive scheme is designed to get open 3's. Too one dimensional...
3. Peanut, once again, goes into conservative mode playing to not lose before playing to win. He did it with 4 minutes left in the game, way too soon.
4. Both teams looked lethargic and just plain bad. No fans, no excitement, no adrenalin. Just boring, go through the motions, basketball.
5. If the 'Cats play this bad on Sat in North Dakota they will get soundly beaten. They better get back on the get motivated bandwagon.

In the second half, three pointers won it for us. That and good D. Still too many turn overs. UNC just couldn't take advantage of them. Our D was very good tonight. :thumb: :thumb:

God reading this you would have thought we had lost. Some people are never happy.

While there were many ugly things that happened tonight, especially shooting and turnovers, the team stuck to it and never let the bad shooting get to them. We did play really good defense tonight, and we are gonna have to keep it up against North Dakota, The "Fighting Hawks" shoot really well at home, but they like UNC have no inside presence. We are gonna have to shoot better and limit the turnovers, Saturday's game is going to be a battle.

GO WILDCATS

I'm on this page as well. I thought our D was pretty good all game, but 7 turnovers in the second half after 11 in the first made a big difference. We seemed more composed in the second half. I'd don't know what Cannon's deal was tonight, but he was pretty bad (and when Senglin dribbles in the backcourt, there are times I close my eyes). That limited Cannon's minutes in the second half where Baker got a lot more time.

I thought it was a good win. When they heated up and tried to make a run, we kept that 6 to 8 point margin in tact.

For once I thought Weber was smart to stall near the end of the game. It was a low scoring game (UNC only put up 54 points), and shortening the game made it even more difficult for an anemic UNC to mount a comeback. When the other team is struggling to score (39.6% on the night), taking off 25+ seconds at a time is a big deal. Also, there's nothing wrong with taking time off the clock as long as you leave enough time to run a play and not cast up a low percentage shot with the shot clock running down.

Plus, near the end of the game, Senglin could have ran some clock down, but instead he spotted an opening and drove in for a layup.

Weber won by 10 in Colorado. They hadn't won there in awhile. I am content.

To add, the only thing that really stuck out to me negatively in this game was Hill reverting to his former self (not having much of a presence on the floor even though he's big and athletic). 22 minutes, 0 points, only took 2 shots, only three rebounds. I didn't pay as much attention to his defense, but he had two blocked shots, he probably helped contribute to UNC not putting much points on the board, and Hill is usually a good defensive player, so I won't fault him there.

Not complaining, just something that stood out to me since watching Hill when he's playing well is one of my favorite things about the team. Hopefully he can get back into a good groove.

Montana just lost to Sac. Sac came back from 20 points down in the second half to win by 4.

Weber is now alone in first.

Last time we were alone in first we lost on the road, Weber needs to keep their composure for Saturday's game. A win in Grand Forks could be huge.

I agree this game is really big. We have a chance to be in the drivers seat.

I think we can expect teams to try to make us win ugly. BJ Hill before the game said the plan was to muck it up and make us turn it over.

I was really impressed with how Weber played in the 2nd half last night. Came right out and pushed the 3 point lead up to 8-10 and then never let NoCol cut the lead to less than 5. Offensively they were at the top of their game given that NoCol was intent on not letting Bolomboy and Hill beat them down low. Weber shot 7-13 from 2 and 6-11 from 3 in that 2nd half. And they were 6-6 from the foul line. Senglin got to the basket numerous times and was 3 of 4 from 3. He really asserted himself. Plus, Baker hit two huge 3s. A big road win.
Quick turn around with a 1pm game on Saturday in ND.

Even though Bolomboy and Senglin lead the team in points and, of course, rebounds, yesterday's win was definitely a team effort. When one of our guys isn't playing sharp, another comes in off the bench and gets the job done. We are so deep and talented. It is fun watching this team develop each week. I get frustrated at times with Cannon, Richardson, Baker, and especially with John, but then I sit back and remind myself that they are all underclassmen with sooo much potential and upside. And when one has an off night another one is on.

Even though he didn't shoot very well in the game, and missed a number of open looks, I think Richardson's defense was probably the best I've seen from him since putting on a Wildcat jersey. He really got into the cubbies faces and played exceptional defense. As for Baker, once again, I couldn't believe that he isn't on the floor more. He had a stellar game and did the little things that were missing last year. He is the glu guy the Cats needed. He just shows up and gets the job done. Final thought, Gittens isn't getting a lot of time, but he does routinely come in and make a big play. His three in the first half really kept the cubs at bay and I think he is starting to find himself defensively.

Weber cannot start like they did tonight in Grand Forks...gotta do a better job of hitting opening shots. Weber could have been up on the cubbies big last night, if they could have hit their wide open shots. Gotta do a better job of hitting the open looks and most importantly getting the ball inside. I don't understand why we don't see more interior passing. Loved it when John cut into the middle when Joel got doubled. Easy pass for an easy 2.

Wow we win and our coach (peanut)gets dumped on and so do the players,I guess it could be worse you could be on the grizzlies forum.
