Northern Colorado/North Dakota

Back at the rental house to end the season before the trip to Reno. Viks at 8-8 in conference and a home sweep this week would look great, but it won't be easy. Northern Colorado is a tough foe and North Dakota is the defending conference champs. We can get the sweep but we need to play tough and smart.

Viks take one on the chin against Northern Colorado, 85-78. Viks now need a win to close out the season against North Dakota to get back to .500 in conference.

Other scores from the conference,

Montana 75, Weber State 57
Eastern Washington 74, Southern Utah 51
Idaho State 101, Montana State 78
Idaho 66, Northern Arizona 52
North Dakota 90, Sacramento State 73

In the clutch last night... and also against Idaho at the rental... if you get PSU into a half-court defense, you drive and we wilt. It wasn't as pronounced last night as against Idaho, but it's pretty damn frustrating.

Can these Viks have enough people healthy to press 94x50 for 40 minutes in Reno?

At altitude? Probably not.

But I think we got a sneak peak into Peery's coaching philosophy and once he gets his "guys" in to where he can press the whole game, even at altitude (this is a must in this conference), this team will be fun to watch.

We close out the season with a good OT win over North Dakota, 97-90. Gutsy performance by the outgoing seniors. Other scores from the conference

Weber State 95, Montana State 92 (OT)
Eastern Washington 85, Northern Arizona 68
Montana 75, Idaho State 64
Idaho 78, Southern Utah 76
Sacramento State 88, Northern Colorado 77

By virtue of Montana's win over Idaho State, we get the 6th seed and will play Sacramento State in the first round of the tournament. Being that the Hornets beat us both times, I don't know if that is a good thing.

Nail-biter this yesterday. As always with PSU men’s hoops, we get to positions in the game where we can break it open, but we fail to. Not a just a Peery thing, it’s just something I’ve noticed over the years where we get to a double-digit lead, but let it get close again and lose the momentum. Good to get the win going into the tourney. I really wish we could have won on Thursday night to get to the 20 win mark for the regular season, but it was not to be.

Some thoughts:

- UND wanted to spoil the PSU senior day. Canda and Hollins said, “uh, no.” That was a pretty sweet last 90 seconds of overtime. Good steal by Woods to get that Hollins dunk.

- A wise man noticed that Tucker was not included in the pre-game senior day presentations. Is he possibly looking at another year due to a medical season or something?

- Giving up 50 points in the second half is not good. Too many close in shots, and 60% 3-ball shooting for UND didn’t help, but so many of those were wide open. I could have driven the lane in the second half. UND really made it a point to run the court fast where we were not able to press.

- It’s always weird to start a game with a technical foul shot. So UND committed that after the Sac State game?

- Mayhew seems to have a case of the yips. The bad part is that he was hesitant in firing off a couple in the second half. Shooters shoot. Period. Keep firing!

- We should have fed Edwards more yesterday. Such a size advantage he had.

- Hollins: Just another double/double.

- Derek Brown. Nothing huge in the stats today, but he had a huge part of our victory today. Those back to back steals really gave us some momentum in the first half.

- Woods. Not his best game today. 42/37/34/43/27/40 for the last six games in minutes. Half are 40+ minutes. I suspect he’s running on empty.

Well, on to the tourney!

Sac St will NOT beat PSU three times in the same season.Period.

Up until yesterday, Sac had been in a bit of freefall. Kind of begs to strike while the iron’s hot. If only PSU could hold a lead when starting strong.
