Coming off the bye week and the only team we get this year to try to avenge a loss to last year (the other two, North Dakota and Northern Iowa, we don't play this year). The Bears are 4-3 so far this year and on the verge of a pretty good season. After this game, they finish with North Dakota and Montana both at home, and then end the year at Cal Poly so three tough games coming down the stretch. I'm thinking this should be a good one and with it at home, coming off a bye week and the Bears possibly (??) overlooking us with those three monster games coming up, we may be able to get this one. That would be nice, for sure.

Rather than going up to Providence Park this Saturday afternoon to watch our coach of the year, his dazzling offense and shut-'em down defense, maybe we'll go to Powell's. Post-game, how about cocktails and dinner at Higgins. Sounds like a very good way to spend Viking game day.

That's actually a cold comment on karma. If anything, 2015 was karma for all those years where the program was in trouble.

Problem: 3,446. The school has been willing to tell larger lies (noted in the article that people don't think there were 1,000 in the stadium today) for this program in previous years. It's in trouble again.

When a team has a good season, usually there's an uptick in season tickets sold. The effect of last year on this has been absolutely nil... at best. SMH.
 
I realized that we're a mash unit out there, but the second half was some of the worst defense that I've seen in recent memory. Zero pressure on their QB and let them throw over the backers and under the safeties, wash, rinse, repeat.

An argument could be made that Kraght caught that ball in overtime and scored to potentially tie the game and force a second overtime, worse case we're 4th and inches. However, the reality is that our defense is nothing short of horrible. 49 points should win you a game 9 times out of 10.

Some highlights:

- Giving UNC 15 yards on a roughing the passer penalty on their final drive of the first half that resulted in a 32 yard field goal versus something around a 50 yard attempt. Lets see, we went to overtime, so that could have made this loss a win.

- Giving UNC 15 yards on their first drive of the 2nd half with a personal foul. That was the start of 29 points in the quarter.

- Holding on UNC's second drive of the 3rd quarter to put them in the red zone and ultimately a TD.

- Throwing a pick on our second drive of the 3rd quarter and following up with a hold to start UNC's drive that resulted in a TD.

- Pass interference on the first play of overtime that gives UNC 1st and 10, and an ultimate TD.

We have given up 111 points in the last two games. 111 points!

Man, this is frustrating.

Which is exactly why my wife and I were not among the hundreds who were there to witness our hapless Vikings hand themselves another loss. You could see this season coming when we were outplayed for three quarters by D2 Central Washington. Confirmation came the next Saturday when San Jose State put up 66 points on us. It is so sad, but it is so Portland State.

So now it is on the road for the two Sacramento area schools then home for Eastern. Mon Dieu, won't that last one be lovely.

Highlights? Or rather lowlights.

Giving up 29 points in one quarter is crazy. Quite a few NBA teams won't give up 29 points in a quarter. For years, the Big Sky has been known for wild and crazy, high scoring affairs, but if you can still win in the conference if you have a sound defense (especially pass defense) like what we had last year. Otherwise, your offense better be scoring every time (like EWU this year). If you don't have either, you aren't going to win very often in this conference.
 
Alan, since you've given up on this team why don't you give us a break and give up on this board too? Of course this means you will be gone permanently as you don't see another 9-2 season ever happening again. I do, unfortunately that means you will also come back buffing your chest enjoying the season, only to leave at the first opportunity for an excuse. You are the problem not the solution, kidding, you are an intelligent and valuable sports fan. Aren't we lucky to have you in our presence.

Please! I haven't given up on this team. This team has given up on the fans. For some reason or another they do not appear like they want to be playing football. The fan base has taken notice and has responded by not showing up as well. According to press accounts maybe 1,000 actually showed up Saturday. Where was the rest of Portland? I know a few of them were at the Farmer's Market and Powell's. For me, it is not about winning, (although that is nice) it is about watching good football. I really enjoy watching good football and actually, I can watch good pretty good football on the field just across the street. Next year instead of buying season tickets for the Viks, we'll take it one game at a time. If after a couple of games it looks like the team has learned how to block, tackle, run patterns, catch passes, and otherwise play the game, my wife and I will be regulars again. If not, we won't. Why should fans show up when the team doesn't?
 
Jump on the streetcar and ride it around the town over to the Pearl and then to the Lloyd Center and Omsi and back across the Willamette. Hike up to Pill Hill (OHSU) or take the gondola.
 
Jesus, people are voting with their feet. We are facing disaster. 1,000 + or-. At least I count in the announced and have since 1996 when we returned to Portland. Our "coach of the year" does not seem to understand that 9 and 2 for one season does not save the program. Have you been watching! You have to teach fundamentals or recruit those that already have them. That is not the case here. Yah, maybe next year. I hope so, but I am but I am not putting any money down on it. Again we had about 1,000 show up to watch the Vikings. A thousand for a D1 football program! Do you think the new president is going to look at the program favorably.

I've come to the conclusion that the solution requires more carrot than stick. Yet we're supporting a school with not a lot of carrots.
 
Alan, I don't find negative, disloyal, quitters admirable. I will no longer read or respond to your posts until you learn how to fan better. I can tolerate various opinions, but not from people who don't seem to care or try to be consistent. Maybe if you can improve I might become interested. Until then you are not worth my attention. I will be riding the street car around town until then. I hope it's a short ride.
