Northern Iowa @ Weber State

Gameday! Latest forecast calls for 58 degrees, thunderstorms, and 92% chance of precip at kickoff. Doesn't look to change much throughout the game, just hoping for no lighting delays. But I'll be there, rain poncho and all. Go Cats!

Prepare for an evening of #PurpleReign, Walmart has purple ponchos for sale. See you all at the game

If you would have told me Weber State would win 29-17, I’d have been really impressed...but the scheme still sucks, the play calling in the second half was abysmal...5 yards, wow.

The defense and special teams were awesome but you can’t count on that every night. Take the foot off the pedal like that in the Big Sky and you will get burned. Still need a new scheme and OC, but great win!

I expect a battle next week.

Cats Win!

Had a great time at the game. Typical Utah weather. Forecast says 100% chance of rain yet we show up and it’s sunny and beautiful for kickoff.

First time seeing the new field house in person and it looks great. Need to get a locker room tour eventually.

The project for next summer is to upgrade that awful sound system...

It's draining watching the offense (if that's what you call it). There would be virtually no difference in the second half if Weber took a knee 3 times and punted, every series. Seriously! The same damn 2 plays, first to one side, then to the other the entire second half! This could be such a good and entertaining football team if they had even a below average offense. Props to the D, especially against that massive o-line, and props to special teams, especially punt and FG teams. Nice to get the win against a good team but how many losses are looming with an anemic offense?

Very good win. Defense played its usual solid game. That UNI O-line was very good and their QB had great mobility. Without the secondary playing as great as they did UNI scores a lot more points.

Special teams came up big. Only misstep was the missed FG. Doug Lloyd! Wow! Need I say more?

The offense. Well what do you say? Good 1st half, then what the hell was that 2nd half? The offense is going to determine how far this team goes. Got to get it together. Not asking for perfection or even to be good. Just need to at least be average.

Can't we just wear those unis every game? Loved em!

Agreed. They are the best. Love the old school “W”, and the all purple look was great.

It has been a couple of years since my last post, but I want to reply to this thread.
Weber just beat the number 7 team in the country by 12 points. NIU is a Big team, outweighing Weber on both sides of the ball.
The game was never close. We had a back up quarterback. Our all American receiver and returner only played 1/3 of the game. Weber played super conservative in the second half.
What is there to complain about?

Agree 100%

Awesome game by the Cats. It was over at halftime. In the second half, yes, the offense was extremely conservative, but we were treated to some amazing special teams play. Wow Lloyd had a hell of a game and the guys on the punt team did a super job on coverage.

Hopefully Rodriguez is okay. He was injured on the punt to end the first half and I didn’t see him come back out of the locker room.

Lloyd named conference special teams POTW

https://bigskyconf.com/news/2019/9/30/football-bigskyfb-root-sports-players-of-the-week-sept-30.aspx

Weber State’s Lloyd had seven punts for an average of 46.7 yards per punt to aid Weber State in a 29-17 win over nationally-ranked Northern Iowa. He also had a career-long punt of 72 yards in the third quarter that pinned the Panthers at the two-yard line. Five of the seven punts for Lloyd landed inside the 20-yard line and three of his punts ended at the UNI two-yard line.

Tale of two halves. Amazing start against a very talented team. Followed by a slog to the finish.

Offense - B (A minus 1st half. C minus 2nd half)
The game plan felt more wide open with Weber using the pass to set up the run until we went ultra conservative. I believe this was caused partially by the injury to Shaheed and mostly by our stubborn offensive coordinator. Weber really struggled to move the ball after the fast start. UNI owned the line of scrimmage and prevented us from establishing much of a run game. On the positive side, we protected the ball and the lead. Solid win, but still lots of room for improvement on this side of the ball. Weber was 5 of 16 on 3rd down and 3 of 4 in the redzone.

Defense - A minus
This was a big team. The UNI O-line was massive and controlled our front 4 more than I would have liked. When we did get pressure, we lost containment too often. The QB for UNI was very mobile and bailed out their offense multiple times with 16 runs for 105 yards. Defensive secondary played one of the better games of the year. A few blown coverages and a couple long plays hurt us, but it was a solid effort against a very good team. Won the turnover battle again with a huge momentum sucking interception by Burke.

Special Teams - A
The special teams play won this game in my opinion. Doug Lloyd pinned UNI deep all game long with 4 punts inside the 5 yard line 3 of which were downed on the 2. Kickoff coverage set the tone early with the forced fumble. Tuttle missed one field goal but was otherwise solid as usual.

Injuries
Lots of hard hits. The hit on the track that injured Shaheed was egregious and definitely changed the game. Supposedly this is a hip pointer and should not be a long term injury. I have not heard anything about Adam Rodriguez' injury. Constantine and Downs were still out and did not play

Penalties
8 penalties for 65 yds most of which came in the 4th quarter. 3 were the 15 yard variety, 2 of which extended a drive and led to a touchdown.

Bring on the Big Sky!

Always enjoy reading your game summaries, WSU

Thanks. I write them mostly for myself. Keeps me grounded as a fan. I am not sure I always have the most educated view, but it does make me reflect on the game.

I had to go back and re-watch that first half again. Man, I like those "Go W" helmets. I vote with the others to make those our permanent unis.
