Tonight we get Eastern. I'm guessing we all figure we are going to lose this game, since it has taken till 3:30 on Thursday for anyone to write about the game. Why? Well, after last Saturday, how can we get excited? Reality...Weber is extremely lucky to still be in contention for the conference crown. I'll say it, if Weber gets the W tonight, it will be a gigantic upset.

To win...Weber will need to run at Eastern all night long. Randy needs to use everyone available on his bench and run, run, run, run at Eastern. We are quicker than the Eagles and that would be the only way we can beat them.

down 32 to 30 at the half I thought the game started at 8 so I'm late to the party so I don't know much of what happened.

Not much. For a while nobody could hit a shot

Pathetic showing by Weber, last count 3 times they fouled a 3pt shot, stupid mental errors. I'm done watching this garbage.

I cannot understand Rahe and his rotation. Not sure why Cannon and Harding sat nearly the whole 2nd half! Rahe has 2 weeks to get it figured out. Need at least a 3 seed.

What is the biggest issue? What do some of you think. You all know my issue. I want to get some of the other members input.

i can't really pin point one specific problem (I think there are many). I just think they are a pretty good team but not great. Nothing special in any aspect of the game. Coaching is good but not great. Defensively not that great. Offensively very good against average to poor teams. Not so much against good teams. The true colors are showing during this rough stretch. Whooping up on crap teams doesn't reveal much. Luckily, the BIg Sky is pretty mediocre and we just need to win 3 straight games to advance to the Big Dance.

I like Rahe but think he hasn't been doing a great job lately.

Tal, in response to your question about what is the problem. The core problem, in my opinion, is two-fold.
1. Randy Rahe is an average coach who cannot "coach-up" his team. In comparison, Abeglen could take a group of average players and win far more games than their talent alone would allow them to win. Randy cannot do this.
2. This team has, overall, very average talent by BSC comparisons, and below average talent by overall Division 1 standards. I watch a lot of basketball and it is easy to see that Weber doesn't have great talent this year. We on this blog usually have higher opinions of Weber's talent than is
justified.
Zach Braxton is a better than average Big Sky center, but probably a bit lower than average
in the whole Division 1 basketball world. I do believe he will get better in next two years.
Quick centers, like Eastern Washington's, eat his lunch. Much better offense than defense.

Jeremy Senlin is probably the best core talent on the team. He is a better than average two
guard in the BSC, but below average as a point. He has glaring weaknesses, and even his
greatest strength (3pt shooting) fails when he is matched up against quick and taller 2's.
Simply put, he is just not as good as we on this blog think he is.

Hill is super-athletic, but has slow response time and a low release point on his shot. He is
far to easy to block. His biggest strength is leaping and blocking shots and he is top-notch in
that limited sphere. But overall, he is well below average by Div 1 standards as a PF. He is
not a talent that can lift a team at critical junctures in games where a lift is needed.

So those guys are the core of the team and they are, at best, average overall by BSC standards. None of them are better than average defenders, even if some can block shots.

Beyond this core there are a bunch of role players Cody John is not a standout point and his shot isn't nearly good enough to rely on as a 2 guard. Even those here who like Cannon understand his weaknesses and limitations. Harding has quickness and is fun to watch. He needs to learn to handle the ball and become a penetrating, scoring & dishing point. If he could master that role he would be exceptional. In his current role he is only a role player. He has to become a point if he is to have a chance to excel. Dusty Baker is another role player. Great shooter when left alone, but teams have figured out that he cannot drive effectively if he is defensed and cannot shoot the 3 effectively if he is not wide open. Not enough athleticism to create on his own. Not big or strong enough to play the 4, where he can score better from but can't defense adequately. Jordan Dallas is still a project and may never be more than that. Richardson is pathetic as a starter. Jut not consistent enough to be relied on as a starter. He should be a back up with limited minutes bringing him in hoping that he will be hot with the 3 pointer to give the team a boost. A quintessential role player, not a starter.

THERE'S NOT ENOUGH TALENT ON THIS TEAM TO OVERCOME RANDY'S DEFENCIES AS A COACH!!

Jeremy Senglin in my opinion is not NBA material, he is alot like (and I hate to say this) Jimmer Fredette, great from 3 land but not much else. Teams have figured out how to stop him which doesn't leave us this year with any other go to guys. I agree with baller about John,Richardson and Baker they are average players, but I also think they are good playing a team scheme.I think the one problem with Randy is he's loyal to a tee.I think developing Jeremy to get to the next level is this year's goal. I could be wrong but that is my take. From what I see next year's crop looks promising and you can't win it every year so here's to next year.

:thumb: I can't really disagree with what you are saying. Baller, this might be your best post.

I've always felt that Randy is a good coach, but that his assistants just aren't cutting it. With Smiley leaving, I knew there would be a drop off this season. I was fairly impressed that there hadn't been a huge drop off until now, but with teams changing the way they approach Weber and how effective it has been lately, you can tell that the assistants aren't getting the job done. Can't blame the new guy, but there are two guys who have been with the team for a while and to me, they just don't get it. Yes, I really like them are people, but their coaching abilities are limited. It was really sad losing Smiley when he was starting to blossom here at Weber State. Something else that hurts Randy is that he is sooo stubborn. I get it, he is a system coach, and his system for the most part gets wins, but you also have to develop players and that just doesn't seem like it is happening.

If it was up to me, tomorrow nights starting lineup would be:

Cannon (defensively he is limited, but he sees the court so well and is really effective on offense)
John
Harding
Hill
Braxton

Senglin of course will still play a lot of mins (the majority), but it could force teams to change their defense right away with the focus not on Jeremy automatically. Teams practice exclusively on stopping Jeremy and it could shock programs by seeing a different starting five. Also, it would go back to Randy's traditional either pick and roll, or inside/out offense, creating more balance. This is just my opinion. I have been really hard on Jeremy lately and that isn't fair. He is an exceptional talent and I'm glad he is at Weber, but something is off right now. By bringing him in off the bench, it could help with automatic energy for the team and also, possibly get him thinking team and playing within the system instead of forcing his offense. He isn't playing loose but very very tight and it shows.

Jeremy Senglin will never make it as a 2 in the NBA. He will be hard pressed play in the D - League or oversees somewhere. I have stood beside Jeremy and I am 5'11". He was only a hairs breath taller than me. Maybe 6 feet and a half inch at the most. And I agree with Tal that he just doesn't cut it as a point. Just ain't big enough for the next level at the 2. To his credit, he can create his own shot, and when he is hot, he is as good a 3pt shooter as their is. Whats with his foul shooting though?

Baller loved your post. I agree with almost everything you said except I think Senglin is much better than above average. Breaking the scoring record (potentially) and shooting such a high percentage with tough shots can't be denied. I agree he is not NBA talent. i think he will have a good career over seas.

Tal I totally agreee Richardson should be coming off the bench. His defense is too soft to be a core guy. Comes in off the bench and you hope he provides a boost by hitting a few 3's.

Senglin cannot see much time at PG. He needs to play his strength and PG is not it.
