Was at the PSU and UNC games at the Dee last week.

Not wanting to start a nasty thread here, but.....

The Joker and Thief was played at both games in the pre-game:
1. PSU game for 20 seconds before stopping for the national anthem.
2. UNC game about 6 seconds before starting lineups are announced.

In the interest of being helpful, here are my suggestions:
A. You need to play the entire guitar riff, drums, etc. instrumental part. That is where it builds and the crowd gets into it. Stop when the vocals start. It is like 1 minute and 20 seconds I would guess.
B. Timing is everything: You want to play it when it can get the crowd going so energy carries into the game. Playing it right before the anthem is not good timing. Playing it prior to the second half starting is great; playing it during a one minute time out during a close game in the 2nd half is really good.

I appreciate that the attempt was made to use the song, I think it has special meaning for fans and student section. With a couple tweaks, it could be better.

OK, off my rant..............

Go Cats

Even my mom is at the point where she wants to hear it, if it's in the fans best interest, why wouldnt WSU be willing to play that song? If you wanna make the fans happy, play the effing song.

It would be best if the song was played before tipoff, the fans are already ready to get into the game, playing the song will only get them more exciited. A 2nd half start would be good too, it would remind everyone that it is once again time to stand up and make some noise.

I dont understand why it's so hard for them to figure out, if it makes the fans happy why take it away? :dunce:

its the only song i can think of in the past decade that fans would all get up and start clapping to the beat consistently. it is not a bad song to play at the games to wake up the crowd. i am not sure i understand how or why there are issues with this song being played. one would think a song the fans all like should be used.

this pumps me up for the games just listening to it now. maybe it was because it was used a lot over the years when we were good so its a pavlov dog thing. it is also my fav song because of the dee.

Customer Service and Weber State? Huh... Yes, we all expect that a school trying to increase fan attendance, alumni/community participation, and overal revenue would be interested in catering to the wants of the customer. But come on...that isn't how Weber works. It isn't about what the customer, fan, or loyal alumnus wants, but what the small minded individual thinks we should want. This is past ridiculous. The crowd loves it, the team loves it since it gets the crowd going, everyone loves it, except the DJ/Dee Events Center Director (JOE STRAND). Okay, I'll admit it, I don't mind Joe on a personal level. I think he is a pretty decent guy, but there comes a point when the dick measuring has got to stop.

Is it really in the best interests of the overall mission of the school, athletics department, and Dee Events Center to piss off their fans? NO... Yes, there are times, in every profession where you have to suck it up, admit your errors, and make the appropriate changes. This isn't rocket science, yet at Weber, they make it WAY to TOUGH. If the school hadn't basterdized the positions on campus by sticking to a strick internal hiring program, then there might be some actual change. A GOOD marketing director would realize that by keeping the majority happy, you will increase sales, because they, the majority, will become your best asset. They will sale your program through their excitment. Unfortuantely, a good game includes atmosphere. The utilization of music at appropriate times is important for crowd dynamics and can actually, contrary to popular Weber State tradition, affect your crowd.
:dunce:
I'm done with this...Weber doesn't want fans. All they care about is their own personal agendas. Cotton Eye Joe is far older and has been played far longer at the games than Joker. By Joe playing it, that is proof that he is thumbing the fans. Do I hate the song, no. I think it can be a positive for the crowd, but by playing it every game, and only playing Joker for 25secs, that is absolutely the most inance example of childishness. JOE what type of example do you want to set for your children? Seriously...I know that by making enemies it really doesn't help you. Wouldn't you rather be stress free and just make a concession? Play it at the start of the second half. Hell, it would be a huge boast to the crowd and the team after halftime.

YIKES!! All I have to do is listen to the first few cords and my first thoughts are Weber State Basketball!!

Journey, Scorpions, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers all have songs that get me excited for basketball season, and remind me of the Dee and Weber State. Heavens, there are a couple of songs from the 2008-2009 Highlight Film that are pretty awesome that could be used.

I GET IT...The Intro Song should be changed every few years. Thats fine, but if the fans still want to hear the song. Make concessions and find another time to play it.

i like joe, he is a cool guy. he did post on here a month or so back saying it is not his decision and he isnt allowed to choose the songs or deviate from the script. so it is someone above him that is at fault i guess. go look up joe's account and click on his posts. he only has 1 or 2.

Like I said...I have nothing against Joe. But I think he is pulling the wool over your eyes. However, if it is someone else, then who else could it be? I know that AD Bovee has people looking at this board. He is interested in promoting fan interaction and excitment. Maybe a major donor dislikes the song.

:dead: :dead: :dead: :dead: :dead:

it seems like this is a solid example of how when people get involved to make a change and have their voices heard nothing happens..... sad.

This topic can't be considered :dead: when every new forum member joins and asks these same questions. It just tells you everyone thinks it.

We wouldn't want the crowd to get overly pumped before the game starts.

The excuses Stand gives for not playing it to start the game in his post is crapola, we've heard Joker I think once the entire season against SJSU, maybe USU.

.... and to top it off we have Bovee telling hawks to get 1,000 signatures to change policy. Pull your head out Jerry. Let the people go crazy to start the game, something exciting, memorable, and most importantly easy for all to participate, & set us apart. it's like Viagra & makes the BlueHairs feel like they're young again...

Give The People What They Want, Jerry..........

 Does anyone really doubt that this would happen? I mean, come on, Weber State actually care what the fans think? I've seen shit look better than the DJ/ing at the games. Nothing ever changes. How many of the members of this forum give money to Weber State? How many are Round Ball, Grid Iron, WCC, PPAK, or Alumni Association members? How many have money invested in family/endowed scholarships? I'm not as old as some members, but I know my family and myself are donors (I was going to say proud, but threads like this one really make me embarrassed for the administration of the school and especially for the administration of athletics). I'm a bit disheartened. I don't think I will be renewing any of my memberships next year, and I will tell the 15 people I got to join certain clubs that they shouldn't either. I feel like I've been lied to. Jerry doesn't care. If there is this much anger over a DJ, you'd think the Athletic Director would have the BALLS to do something about it. :twocents:

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!! You know you will still give the WCC and Alumni Association your $$$. But you do bring up a good point. I'm pretty sure the administration has no clue how many of the 600 forum members are donors. I'm pretty sure that half do give some type of monetary or time donation to the school. As for Roundball or GridIron, it isn't their fault that the music man can't cooperate and be a friend to the common fan at the Dee. Shoot, WCC and Alumni can't do anything to help it either. This is Jerry Bovee's call. I like Jerry, but I'm a bit disappointed that Joe Strand the music man can continue to con him. Does Jerry Bovee answer to Joe?

I read on here a while back it was 10,000 signatures required. :wall:

Do you really think Bovee cares about playing Joker and the Thief at basketball games? If he heard all the hostility over it, he'd probably get a good laugh.

So you are saying that the Director of Athletics doesn't care about the fans opinions, that he isn't concerned about maintaining support for the programs under his stewardship? The AD doesn't want donors, season tickets holders, or loyal fans? Dude, since you are evidently one of the idiots involved in athletics, maybe you should recognize where your salary comes from. It kinda hinders on the ability of the AD to foster, develop, and build a fan base. Comparing your dick size and pissing off fans doesn't really do those things that would promote the growth of the fan base. Playing one song, or not, could be the difference of hundreds of dollars to the program. I know it has turned me off to donating more. It isn't about what YOU want, but what the crowd wants. Have you ever heard of a thing called Customer Service? Do you know what the F that is about? Maybe you should go back and take those Tech Sales classes again. You do get so many free classes a year.
