O-Line

Thought a thread just for the offensive line would be interesting. Here's a take on the depth of each position:

Starting PSU Vikings O-Line 2007: LT Cody Feakin, LG Brennan Carvalho, C Andrew Havili, RG Peter St. John, RT Daren Heerspink

Depth per position:
Tackle- Landan Laurusaitis, Saul Gamoudi, Jasper Croome, Chris Weitzel
Guard- Moses Punzal, Clayton Rios, Sean Lugo, Matt Goeas
Center- Makana Mardonada, Darren Wood, Adam Kleffner

That gives the line a full 3 or 4 deep unit. But that doesn't necessarily mean we can't add more. The complete starting line is made up of all seniors so quality depth is needed for the following season in 2008.

we lost a few lineman from last year but we should not have any issues with all these guys we are getting

You bring up a good point about building for 2008. I think we'll be very good on the O line this year, but we need to give plenty of playing time to the backups.

The depth we have is amazing in my mind! It is really good to see that we are recruiting not just for the following season but for next couple of seasons ahead. With the talent we will have on the offensive side of the ball we could have a shift in strength in the offense and not the defense like we have had for several years now. The only position on offense that is questionable is the Tight end position but there are some individuals that I have high hopes for to fulfill that position such as Matt Leunen http://www.goviks.com/sports/football/rosters/displayPlayer.asp?PLAYER_ID=1845 he could be a huge asset to the offense if he could put on some weight. Kevin McGlothen http://www.goviks.com/sports/football/rosters/displayPlayer.asp?PLAYER_ID=1900. Matt Nelson is another promissing player to fill the starting position for next year http://www.goviks.com/sports/football/rosters/displayPlayer.asp?PLAYER_ID=1813.

With the talent that we will have in the back field for the next several yrs looks to be that we may be finally setting ourselves to become a force to recon with in the BSC. I would like to see us become a highly potent offensive team like we had with Jimmy Blanchard and Neil Lomax. If we can do this, if we can create a potent offense to the likings that Boise State did you will see the in game attendance shift to what we all would like to see like 15-20k

I really cant wait for the spring game and then fall practice. We have the chance to make it the yr of all yrs the one that we make a run for a BS Championship and make a run for a National Championship!

Lugo Donning The Pads Again

It took three years, but Sean Lugo is going to get his chance at the big time. The big 6-foot-3, 300-pound offensive guard graduated from Tualatin High School in 2004, but only found a Division II school knocking at his door. After briefly playing there, he shifted his focus to the wrestling mat. But Lugo will don the helmet and pads again and will do so back at home.

"I'm walking-on at Portland State," Lugo said. "I've taken a little time off, but I'm ready to roll again."

Lugo's story is an interesting one. After a solid high school career at Tualatin, Lugo found the D-I recruiting waters cold and ended up signing at Western Oregon. He played there for a bit, but lost his love for the game a little. Also a standout wrestler as a prep, Lugo ended up getting in touch with the wrestling coach at Portland State and transferred to be a part of the Vikings wrestling program. Once on campus, the thought of returning to the gridiron resurfaced.

"I talked to the (football) coaches about joining the team," Lugo said. "They plan on using me at offensive guard. I'll try to fill in the gaps left by the graduating seniors. I'll be backing up an All-American my first year, but hopefully after that I'll play a lot. I've gotten a lot stronger and I've improved my athletic ability."
