Official: SAC to the MAC

Time for a new thread on this now that it's official.

Wow. I had my doubts about the MAC being an actual landing spot but Dr. Wood pulled it off, his legacy is cemented forever here at Sac State. Hate his political and ideological views all you want, but he got Hornet football to the highest level in all the land. Give the man his due.

I'll post more thoughts and insights on this move later. For now, time to enjoy the moment and hit the interwebs to serve up some crow to the haters. Absolutely amazing accomplishment.

As I said before, I’ll believe it when I see it. And now I see it. At least the football to FBS part.

We’ve all been waiting for this day for-seemingly-ever. Hopefully they can compete well and don’t go broke over all the travel.

Miracle #2 involves a new FBS football stadium, and also, hopefully, a new on-campus basketball arena/events center.

Props to the current University President and whomever else helped FBS to happen.

Pretty amazing, I just heard that Sac State is the first west coast team to move up to FBS in 57 years when Fresno State and San Diego State made the jump.

I have been critical of Wood and Orr and I still think Wood is a bit of a clown, but I have to give him credit here. He said that we would be playing FBS football in 2026 and a lot of people, myself included, thought he was full of you-know-what, but he pulled it off.

I still don't think this is a very good move though. I think the only way this can become a good move for Sac State is if they become a relevant MAC team and an attractive target a few years down the line for a move to a different conference. If they become just a bottom feeder MAC team, who will want them going forward?

So the first domino has fallen and we've got our FBS invite. Now we need to get the stadium settled and become a good MAC team. Then maybe in five years we get that Pac 12 invite. In the meantime, get ready for some Tuesday and Wednesday night home games. Attendance will be interesting for those nights.

That is correct. 1969 was the year those two joined up with Pacific, Cal State LA, LBSU, SJSU and UCSB to form the Big West conference (then known as the PCAA). Nobody in California has made the move since - until Sac State

Wood bought time for a lot of money. This could be a disaster still with midweek games that kill attendance and momentum.

This was not what was sold in moving up. The MW and Pac schools would move the needle a bit locally. Directional Michigan and others are not West Coast name recognizable.

But, it’s still FBS for now. And if a split happens Sac is at least on the FBS side of it. Let’s see on the remainder of things needed, stadium plan, etc

The biggest hurdle was getting into the FBS. Sac has to overcome lack of history and national presence. They had to convince other schools that adding us is mutually beneficial, despite our lack of prestige on and off the football field, lack of facilities, and lack of an endowment or public billionaire donors. We are a risk. An unknown. But if we waited to do it the "right" way as described by the internet gatekeepers, the door to FBS would be closed with this quickly shifting landscape. I consider us lucky that we had a guy willing to break the rules and force his way into FBS. We weren't getting in any other way. As some have suggested, we may have closed the door behind us by setting the cost if admission.

It's easier to work on the funding of the facilities than a conference invite, as you don't have to convince other Universities or governing bodies to accept it. It's within Sac States control. Easier now when the path has been set in stone and FBS is not hypothetical for possible donors. Easier. Not easy.

This was a big accomplishment and we should relish it for awhile and wait for the other pieces to fall in line.

And we keep our Oly sports in the BW for at least 5 years I’d say, probably way more. Still can’t believe the lemonade admin made out of a sh|t sandwich. That’s how the saying goes, right?

For you guys, yes. For us? I'm leery of the admin. The last thing we all want is them coasting into the league and becoming another CSUB where everybody gets dragged down.
