McMackin hiring: the aftermath
The hiring of Greg McMackin already is sparking improvements.
Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said she is seeking to raise the pay scale for McMackin's assistants. Also, she said she is looking into offering multi-year contracts. The assistants are on one-year contracts.
Best of all, UH power cleaned the carpet on the third floor today.
"I was wondering where that thing was," said a coach, pointing to the power cleaner.
Here's a look at how the coaching change impacts several people:
• Jeff Reinebold said he is joining June Jones' staff at SMU as an assistant coach. He said he will leave Hawaii tomorrow morning, but will keep his rental in Waimanalo.
• The current staff: Ron Lee is expected to be named offensive coordinator. Cal Lee is expected to be named defensive coordinator, although McMackin will have a large role in the defensive game plan. Rich Miano and George Lumpkin will have expanded roles. The Dallas Morning News is reporting
• Nick Rolovich and Brian Smith. The offers are in the e-mail.
• Brian Kajiyama. It appears he will be retained in some capacity. He is a graduate assistant.
• Terry "Duff" Duffield. He is no longer on the staff.
• Carl Clapp. Jury's out on this one. He deserves credit for absorbing the abuse aimed at the previous administration. But he gets demerits for running away when lawmakers and the media toured the facilities last week, leaving Teri Chang and John McNamara to field questions. Not cool.
• Compliance Guy. Ya dance with the one who brung ya and ... whoops, where did his partner go?
• John McNamara. He needs to fulfill his promise of selling 30,000 season tickets.
• Derek Inouchi. Even though he looks like he has to go shi-shi whenever controversy hits, he's a good guy and a hard worker. Plus, he came up with the idea of giving away FREE autographed posters of the UH football team. OK, OK, it would have been a better idea a month ago, but I don't see anybody else up there coming up with a new marketing idea.
