Open Scholarship Spot?

With the guys coming back next year and the new recruits we have 12 spots accounted for meaning we have one open spot. Where does it go? My guess is that we go after the best available JC combo guard. We really need someone to step in the shooting guard spot next year. Maybe Jeremiah Jefferson can come in as a Freshman and be that guy. Looking at the roster we really don't have a pure shooter. ( I miss Bamforth) Ryan Richardson could be in that guy too, but I see him as a SF in a couple years. He needs to add some weight and muscle. Does Rahe go after a transfer from a 4 year school and have them sit out a year? I really think we need someone to step in and play right away and contribute big time. I think Senglin, Gittens, Hill and Bolomboy are 4 of the starters next year. Who will be the 5th?

Great win yesterday. I'm really excited for the next 4 home games and hope to see UNC slip on on their Montana trip.

They will probably look at combo guards and bigs as well. If they bring a post player in, he would need to be better than what we already have. That is not an easy thing to find at this point in the recruiting year. The most likely thing is a combo guard. Is that a 1/2 combo or a 2/3? Probably the best JC they can find. To me, bringing in a JC player, just to be a tackling dummy in practice, is a waste of time and money. That being the litmus test, it will have to be an impact player or nothing at all, unless it's a freshman.

It's really hard to find a lot of information on potential JC players. It will be interesting to see how it all works out. I do know that we are still actively recruiting. :coffee:

James Hajek should be the 5th. Agree we need a spot shooter... But I think the need to dominate on the boards is greater.

Who really knows what next years 'dire need' will be. Personally, I think rebounding is more of a need than another shooter. Also, we have a great shooter out on a mission and some incoming recruits who are also great shooters. We are not losing any great rebounders to graduation, but we are a poor rebounding team right now. Maybe Zack and Ryan can help in that department, but that is not a proven fact until it happens. :coffee:

I would prefer the tough rebounding guy like Mook Otis. Probably a JC kid that can bring some leadership and toughness. It frustrates me when much smaller teams punch us in the mouth, so we back down and don't rebound very good.

I would have to agree. Weber has had some real struggles with rebounding, toughness, and leadership. I underestimated what Mook did for the team. I guess I thought Tres/Joel/Hill might be able to make up for him not being here but so far that hasn't happened. We might not get the type of perimeter shooting we'd like from Senglin and Gittens but they should develop their own shots enough to help with the loss of Bam-- the majority of our shooting doesn't have to be from behind the arc, does it? Rahe needs to play to the strengths of the current players, not try retrofitting.

We all thought that Joel would be an adequate replacement for Mook, and he is as far as individual rebounding is concerned. However, when you look at rebounding, offensive production and leadership, by that position, losing Mook was a net negative. I say that, even though we have more depth at that position this year than last. I don't think that the biggest problems have come from the guard line this year. The front court has been our problem. Much of that has to do with the injury to James and the lack of experience at the 4 position. :coffee:

Mook was unique in the Big Sky. A player who was too quick for typically bigs to guard and too big to put a guard on him. His spin moves to the basket were amazing. Bolomboy does look like he is improving his low post moves, but he is no where near the offensive threat that Mook was. The guy shot an incredible 67% from the field over the last 8 games of the season.
As for how to fill the last scholarship spot, remember just because we fill that spot this for next year doesn't mean it won't be open to be filled again for 2015-6.

I don't mind repeating myself, so here goes.

If you are only going to play 8 or 9 guys, why have a 13th player unless he can crack that 8 man rotation. Otherwise you are wasting your time and money, let alone the players. If all you want is a blocking dummy for practices, bring in a football player or another walkon from the student body. If you are recruiting to replace players leaving the program or freshmen who have future potential, it's a different story.

My opinion: Use that 13th scholarship like a rainy day fund. Available at any time, to swoop in and grab an incredible player who may be possible only on a short notice. We know from past experience that these situations do come up. Be ready!!! :coffee:

Wouldn't be surprised if that was what Rahe is doing right now. That said, the swooping needs to be either for a shooter or a guy who can board like a maniac. Can't believe how much we are missing Bam and Mook.

Honestly, I think the shooting is taking care of itself with our guys getting more experience and the guys we have coming in next year and the following year. I think that the coaches may be thinking that additional ball handling and defense to replace what we are losing in Richardson, is needed most. They may be worried about the incoming freshmen having the ability to contribute in those areas, right out of the gate. They may also be thinking that Zack will be able to help with the rebounding as a freshman or that James is a better rebounder than Kyle. These may be the reasons that we are hearing about the need for another combo guard, as apposed to a forward. :coffee:

Personally, I think that Rahe will sign an impact JC player in the spring who is a shooter. Shooting is the biggest issue with this team. And Weber is losing two SRs, who have range. Weber leads the Sky in defense and will only improve as a rebounding team. Also, the ball handling will improve as the guys mesh. But with what is coming in and what the Cats are losing, it makes the most sense to find a wing who can shoot the ball and score. Oh, a leader wouldn't be a bad thing either.

I hope that if he does bring in a combo guard that he is an impact player. Otherwise, why do it? They will want someone who can, at the very least, run the team from the point if needed. As it sits, we have Senglin and an incoming freshman at the point next year. Senglin is solid, but you never know how a freshman might develop in that first year. I have no idea who we might be recruiting. I'm hoping that there is an Edie Gill or a Ruben Nembhart out there. :coffee:

Here's a JC recruit that might fill the open spot (was offered yesterday):

34% 3pt. why? :wall:

Bamforth was at 41% coming out of Western Nebraska JC with work ethic unmatched by anyone but Lillard.

I want to see a real 3 pt threat with that 2 position spot

He is money from the foul line. It looks like he has good shooting form. 6'1 shooting guard may be a little undersized. With Jefferson, Gittens and Royce I am not sure why we went after a SG but no worries. Is he really going to see playing time?

you're kidding? We are losing Berry & Rich. Gittens can't shoot worth a damn, yet. & Jefferson will be a true Fresh, our current team isn't shooting the 3 ball like past Wildcat teams and you're wondering why we're offering a SG.

The coaching staff may be looking to replace Berry's scoring ability with this offer.

This staff has missed on most jc's Noble, Bradford, Zaid, Session. Bamforth, & Hansen the exceptions.

This isn't the type of guy I thought the staff would go after. I was hoping for a guy similar to Berry. 6-4/6-5 type guy. But hell, what do I know. At first, I thought he was a guy who plays bigger than his 6-1 would suggest, but he isn't much of a rebounding guard. I know nobody wants to hear this, if the Cats are going for a guy at 6-1/6-2 he best have hops like Franklin Session.

What this does tell us is that the Cats are looking at JUCO kids and are planning on signing someone this spring. Also, that Rahe and Co. feel comfortable with someone on the team being able to play the 3 next year and is looking for a SG. Who are the 3 candidates?? Gittens, Williams, Hill, Fuller??
