Ken Bone And Viking Basketball Are Finalists For Oregon Sports Awards

The Portland State men's basketball team and Head Coach Ken Bone are both category finalists for the Oregon Sports Awards to be presented February 8 at Nike's Tiger Woods Center in Beaverton.
The Oregon Sports Awards annually recognizes the finest in athletics in the state. For 2008, Viking Coach Ken Bone and his Big Sky Conference champion team have both reached the top tier of finalists.
The 57th annual Oregon Sports Awards take place from 7-9 p.m. on Feb. 8. The show will not be televised live, but Comcast SportsNet will replay the Sports Awards at 8 p.m. on Feb. 9, and 10 p.m. on Feb. 10 and Feb. 13. It will be available via ON DEMAND starting Feb. 14.
Ahmad Rashad, an Emmy award-winning broadcaster and former football star at the University of Oregon and in the NFL, will be the broadcast host. Bill Schonely, the Portland Trail Blazers’ founding broadcaster/ambassador, will serve as ambassador and host. Various sports celebrities from Oregon’s past and present will help hand out the awards.

Bone, the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year for 2007-08, led his team to the Big Sky Conference title and a first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament last March. The Vikings were 23-10 on the season, marking the best record in school history.
Prior to the first of the year, Bone had led his team to a 10-4 start to the 2008-09 season, and the biggest regular season win in school history, a 77-70 decision over seventh-ranked Gonzaga on Dec. 23.
Bone has been named a finalist for the Slats Gill Award recognizing top administrators, coaches and organizations. Other finalists in the category include: Danny Ainge, Boston Celtics; Vin Lananna, University of Oregon track and field, cross country; Kevin Pritchard, Portland Trail Blazers; Mike Riley, Oregon State University football.
The Viking basketball team us up for the George Pasero Team of the Year Award for winning the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament titles and advancing to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in school history. The Vikings were 23-10, won their final 14 games against Big Sky opponents and set or tied 17 school records. PSU also had the Big Sky Player of the Year in Jeremiah Dominguez, Defensive Player of the Year in Scott Morrison, and a first team All-Conference selection Deonte Huff.
Other finalists in the category include: Northwest Star Academy Senior Babe Ruth baseball; Oregon Institute of Technology men’s basketball; University of Oregon men’s cross country; University of Portland men’s cross country.
Portland State has had four previous winners of the Slats Gill Award - two of whom are still on staff at PSU: Mouse Davis (football) and Jeff Mozzochi (volleyball).
Viking teams have won the George Pasero Team of the Year Award five times, and all were national champion teams: four by the Viking volleyball program and one by the Viking wrestling team.
