Oregon state game

OMG, the comment sections on O-Live for the various articles concerning this game are depressing. Either these are low information observers or are they are blinded by entrenched bias. There is an abundance of comments reaming OSU players and coaching staff for nearly losing to an FCS team (many predicting the only win of the season). What's depressing is that little credit is given to the skill sets and effort of the opposition. There's always going to be a team in a match-up that has bigger, or faster, or stronger, or more skilled athletes. Today was no different. If those teams always won, and won big, what's the point of competing ? Wouldn't it be refreshing if a disappointed fan said " Our team needs to improve, but they went up against a pretty damn good team !" ?

Most people think the gap between FBS and FCS is this wide chasm that should never be crossed, Part of it has to do with (my opinion) the lack of attention given by OLive towards Portland State and the Big Sky, This conference has always prided itself as a great football conference, which is why I was telling people not to take any Big Sky opponent lightly, But many Beaver (and Duck) fans think they are top dogs and everyone else (FCS, DII, DIII) are equally below them. Therefore, losing to Portland State is equal to losing to Willamette,

Man, we did everything today, but win the game. I thought that we had this in the bag when it appeared that Nall fumbled when we were up late, but not to be. Heck, even when our field goal was about half way to the uprights I was thinking we’d have a chance in overtime. Such is life. Absolutely nothing to not be happy with about the way we performed today. I can’t wait to start playing FCS programs after the last two weeks. OSU didn’t win today, we lost it, by mistakes. Mistakes can be corrected. We have the talent and depth to compete for the BSC and ultimately the playoffs, that is clear.

Kicking is a hot mess. I think all in all, it was good to go for the field goal with Kennedy. Plenty of leg, just a couple feet right. Eh, it sneaks in, and maybe we’re talking about an overtime win or loss.
Some notes:

- Holy hell it was hot out there today. I can’t imagine how hot it was on the field.

- Starting center out today was an issue.

- Eason. Was it a concussion? It was odd, he was kind of standing there for a while with the play clock going down, and then seemed to sit down on the field. I hope it’s not serious. Other than that pick six that he threw, I thought he played well. That pick six was a true freshman throw. Bound to happen. He’ll grow from it.

- So that knee down call on our punter in the 4th was kind of big. We ended up dodging a bullet with the missed OSU field goal, but video on the board was kind of hard to tell. Frankly, I think that call is a little on the BS side. If it’s some running back trying to get into the end zone, I get it. It’s a punter fielding a snap that’s a little low and to the left. Come on. We could have had them inside their five yard line. Our punting is great so far this year.

- Josh Kraght ate his Wheaties this morning. Not a whole lot more that he could have done today.

- Summers had a day as well. 18 rushes for 110 with a reception.

- Offensive: The numbers speak for themselves. 515 yards on a power 5 conference. Well done. Offensive line play was nothing short of fantastic. Talley was great as the short yardage guy.

- Defense: 18 first downs and only 389 total yards given up. Lot of guys flying around today. Manning, Duronslet, and others were great. Seisay’s reputation seemed to be known, as OSU didn’t appear to want to throw to his side. Those guys gave it their all today. Dade was a bit slow to get up after nearly getting the QB on OSU’s final drive, but I think it was just that he was completely spent. Job well done today for the defense.

Onward to the bye week. I’m not sure if I can recall an 0-2 that I’ve ever been more positive about. Let’s heal up, fix our issues, and beat the hell out of UC Davis on the 16th.

No one else in the conference really lit the world up today. Northern Colorado and Weber had big efforts but they were both against the NAIA. Very disapointed in the showing by Southern Utah down in Eugene today, as well as North Dakota's play against Utah on Thursday. Just the first week for most of the Big Sky but I'd say we are just as good as everyone else. It is going to be a great conference race.

Actually, Ken Goe's column in the Olive was mostly positive comments about PSU players and the team as a whole. And,of course, pistol-whipping OSU.

Finally, calmer minds chime in :

Dang, we almost caught those Beavers! That was a close game and almost an upset. I think this year's Viks are going to make a run at their first Big Sky championship this year! Eason is so athletic and Kraght is just a stud who can do anything! #GoViks #BarnyBall
