OT: Finalists for ISU President Named

Dr. Wight was named today as the new president of Salisbury University in Maryland. ISU's search is down to Satterlee and Woodworth-Ney...

http://www.salisbury.edu/president/search/

I'm curious if ISU slept on Wight or if there a defined timeline in which the new president will be named? Was really hoping Wight would come our way, but hoping it wasn't the case of ISU or the state board holding out too long so he made the decision for himself and went to Maryland.

Interviews were yesterday with the state board, and it sounds like Wight pulled out this weekend when he knew he was getting the other job. When he announced his resignation from Weber, he said the reason was because he had applied for several jobs. My worry with Wight is exactly this - that he'd be offered and accept another job before the ISU process was finished. The Salisbury U salary is about the same as ISU's, both higher than Weber's.

...... :wall: .............Wight was my first choice......now praying hard that my second choice gets it......

Amazing. Apparently the search protocol makes it impossible to hire the right person in the right time frame. Bureaucracy.

Sounds like the board is going forward with just the two finalists:

Board will announce the new president today at 4:30 among the two candidates still left standing after everyone else withdrew.

Editorial about the situation in the Journal today:

Idaho's board is about as worthless, and evidently political, as Montana's BOR and Commissioner. ISU got the back of the hand by the board. BSU and Lewis and Clark State have priority. This does not bode well for ISU.

Yep, it's a political payback committee. It's become very Treasure Valley dominated, and the entire state has become that way. People will continue to vote for the letter in parentheses after a name, instead of the person him/herself. The board is filled with people who are not qualified to sit on an education board, but are there because they are being paid back for donations or whatever. You get what you vote for. And this goes for either side.

By the way, I have asked each candidate running for governor if they plan to include ISU and east Idaho representation on future SBOE's, and not one has returned a response to me. I encourage everybody here to ask the same question to a candidate if you get the chance to do so.

I found an editorial from a couple years ago, produced by the Lewiston paper but also carried by the Twin Falls paper.

Look at the way Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has filled that board. Otter gets to pick seven of the eight state board members. State schools Superintendent Sherri Ybarra holds the eighth seat by virtue of her elective office rather than gubernatorial appointment.

Thanks to Otter, no one on that board lives on the Palouse—or even north central Idaho. The governor chose to replace Bill Goesling of Moscow with Albertsons executive Andrew Scoggin of Boise. So for the first time in 25 years, there is no Latah County voice on that panel.

Someone living in Moscow or its vicinity these past years would better understand the region’s prevailing attitude toward alcohol. He’d also have more than a passing awareness of the proactive steps the UI has taken to curb excessive drinking, especially by students who are underage.

In fact, Otter has named only two graduates of Idaho’s public colleges and universities to set policy for those institutions.

Emma Atchley of Ashton earned a bachelor’s degree from the UI and a master’s degree from Claremont Graduate School in California.

Linda Clark of Meridian earned her bachelor’s degree from BSU, a master’s from the UI and a doctorate from the University of San Francisco.

Of the remaining five Otter appointees who attended out-of-state schools, three are products of Utah institutions. Members Debbie Critchfield of Oakley and Scoggin graduated from the Mormon church-owned Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah. Scoggin also earned his law degree at BYU. Richard Westerberg of Preston attended state schools in Utah.

Hill earned his bachelor’s at Imperial College, London University and completed an MBA at the University of Chicago.

Don Soltman of Twin Lakes earned his bachelor’s at the U.S. Air Force Academy and his master’s from Baylor University in Texas.

Ybarra is a graduate of West Liberty State College in West Virginia. She has completed a master’s and an educational specialist degree from the UI—where she is also pursuing a doctorate.

At least he is an outsider which is probably good. Fresh eyes, new ideas, different ways to look at the issues.

W-N could have been perceived as Vailas II. Satterlee may work out, but the BOR f*cked the pooch on this whole process. Tainted choice.

What's your basis for calling Satterlee a "tainted" selection? Are you aware of any specifics about him that made the choice "tainted"? When it comes to athletics, I would say him supervising NCAA Compliance at Boise State probably means he's pretty tuned in to the benefits of a successful program. He was the final choice from over 70 applicants, narrowed to five then down to two with withdrawals, then was selected over the other finalist who, if selected, would likely have sent the faculty into riot-mode. Are you saying the SBOE made a mistake by making him a finalist?

Lots of haters out here.. I wonder if there would be so much chatter if we all had to attach our names and credentials to each post..?? Give the guy a shot.. I hope he hits a homerun for us here in Poky! Best wishes, Pres. Satterlee!

Purely from my standpoint I hope he's a friend to athletics.

I don't see a lot of haters. I hated the process, but I'm optimistic about the pick. Both Lewis Clark State and ISU named their presidents yesterday. That seems silly to me - certainly they could have staggered the process by a couple weeks or so, rather than say they were bogged down. The provost position down at USU has remained open, and after some candidates dropped out (ahem, Woodworth-Ney), they added additional finalists.

Now that said, I went back last night and watched Saterlee's forum with student leaders. I liked that forum better than the one he had with faculty and the later one with the community. He was very direct and realistic. Had I watched that forum earlier, he would have been my solid #2 pick behind Wight. Experience and track record carries a lot of weight for me.

There is a faction of faculty/staff/alumni who are never going to be satisfied with the pick. I get that. They have predicted doom for ISU, and they go out of their way, no matter what, to blast anything coming out of ISU. Presidents of universities aren't a "pure" academic choice anymore; that is, they aren't necessarily professors who ventured into the administration side. Many universities have hired CEO's to lead them. Higher education is constantly evolving and changing. bSu's prez was a politician, for crying out loud.

Like PBP, I think a fresh pair of eyes and philosophy is badly needed. I like that the athletic department has to be on their toes, because I think W-N would have meant business as usual. I like that Satterlee has worked with bSu athletics. I like that he was at bSu when CWI came to fruition. I like that he knows the state board of education and the state officials. I like that he has talked about going to major employers in the area to talk about what they are looking for in ISU grads.

So yeah, no hate. Didn't like the process, but I wish Satterlee nothing but luck. Like some of the candidates said in their forums - some of ISU's problems aren't unique to ISU. They are solvable.
