The Oregon legislature has approved a $24 M remodel of the Stott Center, which includes a pretty cool, "glass wall" design for Portland State's on-campus basketball arena.

Beautiful! That’s exactly the kind of thing ISU could do with Reed Gym. Seating for 5500-6000 people for basketball would be perfect! Heck, Gonzaga’s McCarthy center only seats 6000 and they’ve got a decent program. Now we just need to find a “sugar daddy”, to get us started. I’d throw in some cash to help out!

Three quick thoughts...

I wonder where Portland State will play basketball while this is being built.

Second, I'd hate to try to shoot with the glass wall as the background especially if it's during a day game. That could be a problem with the sun much like the Astrodome roof when that first opened in the mid 1960's.

Hopefully they actually have plans for locker rooms in this building instead of what they have now. A few years ago ISU's 'locker room' was 12 chairs and a white board next to the swimming pool. No I'm not kidding. Some folks were really upset over this and they should have been. It was pretty amaturish.

Interesting financing approach: $20 M will be raised in private funding, and the state approved $24 M in bonds. Wouldn't work in Idaho, unfortunately, because the state does not fund athletic facilities on campus -- all the funding has to come from private donors. But the good news is the Powerball jackpot is up to $140 M this week, and I have numbers.... :D

I'd love the walk from the Holt Arena parking lot to Reed Gym becasue there are 6,000 people there to watch a game. I'm sure other, closer parking, cold be designed into a plan. Or just not do any improvements because we don't want to worry about adding extra parking.

This is just a guess on my part... I have no inside info but I suspect for that kind of money ISU would rather build a brand new basketball only facility as opposed to sinking money into Reed Gym which has already been renovated once and is what 50 years old?
