Pacific vs Portland State

Well, here we go.

DIII team. I don't care if they return five starters and ten letter winners. We should roll.

If we don't win by at least 20, this season is going to be long.

It'd be great to see sharp focus by the 1's, 2's, and 3's for the duration of the game, and the chalupa chant starting with about seven minutes to go in the second half.

Not quite 20, Marty. A last second 3 made by Pacific made it 19. I'll settle for that. Lots of fouls, mostly by Pacific. Lots of turnovers, way too many by us (19). Low scoring first half. We still don't look like a team. Playing with most confidence - Moore, McMullen, Dre Winston, Harthun. Cataldo commits fouls, didn't play much. Prosser also drew fouls. Our big guys are not too impressive at this point. Martin Whitmore was only in 5 minutes but scored 6 points (one a three), had an assist and a couple rebounds. And no fouls! Should he play more? From this game, I'd say we're playing around 6-7 in conference.

A win is a win I guess.

The good:

-I thought that our on the ball defense was quite good at times. Guys seemed really focused and were playing really tight in man to man.

-We can really get the ball down court in a hurry. Our transition game should be pretty solid this year as long as we have our guards moving the ball down the court. Twice we had our big man get a turnover and try to do their best Steve Nash. Worked once, failed on the second try.

-I'll take >=40% from beyond the arch. 41.7% works.

-Active hands forced a lot of turnovers.

-I think Parker is going to be really solid this year. A couple more minutes tonight and he's got a double/double.

The bad:

-Turnovers. 19. Needs to improve. Can't have a 3:5 assist to turnover ratio from the starting point guard. That won't get it done.

-Missed open jumpers. Is it me or did we clank quite a few wide open short range jumpers? I noticed that in the exhibition game as well. Yeah, the ladies like the three ball, but an open mid range jumper is a gift and we need to cash in on it.

-Free throws. We should hit at least 75%

Random:

-How big was the team bus for Pacific? 19 guys on the roster and 18 saw game time? When I first looked at their bench I thought I was seeing double.

-DJ up above the entrance to the court. Interesting.

-This game had periods of me thinking that we look pretty good, and then minutes of me wondering what was on television out in the lobby. At times both teams traded turnovers, missed shots, and dumb fouls, which can also be seen down at your local YMCA....

At the end, we're 1-0, and that's what counts.

I'm really worried about our "bigs." One, there isn't enough of them and two, the players we do have don't seem to be very talented. I hope I'm wrong, but both Cataldo and Prosser were driving Coach Geving crazy last night. These guys should be head and shoulders better then the Pacific post players and that just wasn't true last night. I also don't know if Coach Geving's decision to pull Cataldo out immediately out after making a mistake is wise. He needs playing time! On a positive note, Aaron Moore looked a lot better last night and will be a key player for the Viks this year.

I agree regarding Moore. He looked a lot more comfortable out there last night.

Geving has always been one to yank a player after a mistake. I recall him doing that during the Bone days as well.
