Perspective after 3

Not as bad as our performances and not as good as our preseason expectations.

This past weeks game, gave me hope that our offense is getting back on track. Also felt better about our Special Teams (FG/PAT) being able to block going into BSC play.

Though I feel we have underachived a little, (in all aspects of the game) I don't think anyone really expected us to be 3-0 at this point in the season and in fact we are the record most expected. (Well most of us not under the influece :mrgreen: )

Against SJSU our defense played well and held a pretty high caliber offense in check, only exposed in the air becasue of lack of pass rush, which is expected when playing against larger upper level teams. The Offense though shut out did move the ball well at times, but lack the ability to finish in the red zone...only concern I had after this game was the PAT/FG team.

Against ASU, I felt we had a little bit of a set back...basically a carry over issue from the SJSU game..after getting the initial FG blocked and then giving up a fairly quick score, it made for a bad night. We played flat and looked overwhelmed in all aspects of the game. Talent wise there was clearly a difference, so I take it for what it;s worth....$450k :twocents:

Against SOU, well the "O" and special teams showed up and I was happy about that...The defense, well that was ugly, but I also have a little bit of a different perspective on that...the coaches knew what they were seeing coming in, and I am sure worked on a plan to try and stop it, but within their system, sometimes that doesn't work. Ask all the FBS teams that lost to FCS teams the last couple weeks and years...it happens...I would rather our defense lick its wounds and be prepared to stop BSC foes than change thier system to try and stop a wild offense in the pre-season. Now if CP or UCD or Montana throw up 49 against us, then I will be pissed.

I think we will be fine....again we are right where we expected to be record wise :D

Now get healthy hornets and get ready for SU.

I also expected us to start out 1-2. However, we've looked about as bad as humanly possible getting there...

OG makes some good points, which I agree with. Let’s hope the defense (coaches and players) completely overlooked SOU. The FCS schedule starts this week, we avoided an embarrassing loss to a lesser team but now the most important games start. We’ll know what this team is really made of from here on out.

I am nowhere near panic mode yet, 1-2 at this point of the season was expected. We had a shot at San Jose, IMO they are a middle of the road FBS team, nothing special. If our offense plays that poorly in the BSC we would be lucky to beat teams in the bottom third of the conference. At ASU we were completely over matched, too much speed and talent to make a game of it. SOU despite NAIA, D2 whatever is probably the most explosive team we'll face the rest of the way. They will not be the most talented or have the same depth of talent as the BSC teams, but with a QB and offense like they can be dangerous to anyone. I was just glad to get out of there with a win.
We have a string of winnable games SUU, Weber,and NCU to help get our act together and heal before facing the tougher part of the season, ND, Montana, Poly, PSU and the Causeway. Hopefully we will see improvement starting Saturday vs Southern Utah.

Bottom line I'm so sick of mediocrity with this team....
We hear every year that this is the year we get over the hump and we don't..
I wouldn't be so negative if we showed better the first three games
Two shutouts and a OT win vs. a NAIA ,come on that is ridiculous..
Sperbeck is a good coach but what does it take to get these player to take the next step.
Where is the killer instinct? The program has more talent than ever and still is a .500 program..
There is no reason for that in my opinion..

As bad as it has been there is still plenty of time to turn it around, but it has to start this week.

"The program has more talent than ever " Really, how long have you been following Hornet Football?

As upset as I've been, I think this game will be the test to see if we can salvage this season. If the coaching staff can make the necissary adjustments and get these players on the right page, we have some hope. We have some tough Sky teams on the schedule, but luckily we also have some teams that are struggling (like ourselves). We've had issues with Southern Utah in the recent past, so I think it will be a tough contest, and the perfect setting to see what this team can actually do this season. Weber and Northern Colorado come next, and will be opponents we should have no excuse loosing to. However, if we loose to Southern, those games will simply be catch-up games. If we loose all three or struggle mightily, its time to start looking for life after Sperbeck. The last half of our schedule is a gauntlet, so we need to rack up wins now. Montana's struggles seem to be righting, and road trips to Poly and Portland are plain scary. At this point I basically have to write all three of those games as losses. If we loose to those guys up 80 again, I'm sorry, but Sperbeck needs to go the second the whistle blows.

We've been chasing the next-level for too long. We've failed to become a contender, and now it seems like we're regressing now. If our season becomes an embarrassing failure, time to turn the page and look for new leadership.

I'm not sure what's wrong with me, but I think we win the next 4 games and sit at 5-2. Now they've done absolutely nothing to lead me to be this optomistic, but until we starts bombing against FCS schools, I won't fully cave.

@SJSU - L (0-1)
@ASU - L (0-2)
SOU - W (1-2)
SUU - W (2-2)
@WSU - W (3-2)

NAU - W (5-2)

WHERE OUR SEASON IS MADE!!!

@UND - L (5-3)
UM - L (5-4)
@CP - L (5-5)
@PSU - L (5-6)
