PGE Park, Lents, Paulson, etc. Debate

Stadium Decoupling 4, Fritz 1.

Yes!

Excellent! The Viks will no longer have to play in a baseball stadium. This is great news.

Thank you Timbers!

What impact will the stadium remodel have on PSU Football? Improved recruiting, revenue, opponents, morale? Yes, yes, yes and yes.

While we await final details on the PGE remodel, I thought I'd offer my wish list for the new stadium:

1) A roof over the east stands. Admittedly, this is just for aesthetics, as I think it would look odd and assymetrical to only have a covering for two ends of the place. I've heard mixed reports on whether or not a roof is planned.

2) At least a few seats behind the south end zone. Again, I've heard varying reports on whether or not this is planned. Placing a few rows of seats behind the end zone would "soften" the austere feel of the MAC's architecture and look much better on TV.

3) Improved scoreboards. Having an even larger replay screen, and possibly a second smaller one elsewhere in the stadium would be nice.

4) LED ribbon. This is more important for soccer, but using the LED screens like they have at Home Depot Center and Qwest looks so much more "big time" than the advertising boards currently used at PGE. Depending on how close the stands are to the field, this may not even apply to football.

Thoughts on my requests? Any other suggestions?

I agree on the east side roofing over the stands. It would give it more of a horseshoe look and feel, and would probably make the place louder. However, roof = more $'s.

Seating would be neat in the south endzone. Another thought is the Widmer beer garden. I'm assuming that it's moving from it's existing location, or being removed in it's entirety. Maybe the south endzone is the place for it since the bullpen would be eliminated.

My requests would be the same complaints from all. PA system, restroom/concessions, and while we're at it, a southwestern most exit point would be nice (stairway), as I don't think that there is one.

Someone on the Timbers board suggested actual trees in the south end zone, which would be pretty sweet considering the soccer team's name and the city's reputation for all things green.

One problem. Draw a line from the far southern edge of the stadium, in the line of that edge, to 18th. The property generally south of that line belongs to the MAC. They "allow" what's fixed on that property to remain. My understanding is that they don't want fixed stands there, they don't want the building "defaced" with a larger video board, and anything else we might place there is subject to their approval. A stage has been suggested... maybe, maybe not. Moving the Widmer area there could happen, possibly in concert with the stage.

We'd all love the roof on the east side. There are rumors that this gets kicked out with the cut in available funding for the project... we'll see.

LED boards... depends on what income we- and TV- could derive from it. A distinct possibility.

The thing I've been wondering about is terracing. Basically, Timbers Army wants seats removed at the north end, make it standing only, with rails for safety purposes. The Timbers seem like they may agree with this. The rumor I hear is that folding chairs or thereabouts could be dropped in for other events... perfect, BTW, for a PSU band and their space needs. Beyond that, consider a standing student section!

I understand the thing about where the MAC property starts, but if the field is moved slightly, wouldn't you have the space where the bullpen is to get a little creative?

As for the improved video scoreboard, I don't think it has to affixed to the MAC. You could just replace the current one with a bigger version in the exact same place, couldn't you?

Do other soccer stadiums employ the terracing concept for their supporters' sections? I've never heard of this, but I'm certainly no soccer expert. It sounds like a cool idea, and if the TA wants it, it seems like Paulson would give it to them.

Yeah, we wouldn't want to deface the all mighty MAC Club. It's just so aesthetically pleasing. ;-)

Ten days without comments in this thread and even more since we got any real news. I'm dying for an update on renovation plans!

The club is also still in the drawing-board stages of determining the stadium configuration for 2011. “We’ll float a bunch of ideas about stadium configuration, and you guys should have a look at that,” Merritt said.

unfortunately even if PGE park had a new capacity of 30,000 neither Oregon or Oregon State would travel to PDX for a game.

they would make waaaay more money staying home and HOSTING another Div 1 (1aa/FCS team) than playing a roadie against PSU.

given the payout involved, Oregon and Oregon State probably wouldn't have any trouble finding a Div 1 FCS to travel to Eugene or Corvallis.

increased capacity or not, no way a BCS conference team plays a roadie at a Div 1-FCS school.
not happening.

Who said it was happening? Most realize the truth in the points you make. For most people the realistic goal is to have one of the best stadiums at the FCS level and a stadium that would be average if PSU could ever join the WAC.

I agree that Oregon wouldn't come. For Oregon State...I think it would be a smart move. The school is still underrepresented in Portland given its size and proximity to the city. Yes, there are quite some Beavers hoodies around, but nothing compared to UO. This city should be a war zone (with PSU in the middle  ). Games in Portland would give OSU some presence, which would be nice. It seems to work with baseball. For the UO-OSU baseball series, I bought a OSU shirt even though I have never even considered going to school there. I did it for the sole purpose of not being mistaken for a Ducks fan.

visibility is one thing. making money is another.
OSU can just have a spring game in PGE PARK if they want to.

Playing home game at Reser = Money Maker
Playing road game at PGE = no money at all........

Football is the cash cow for the other sports. How does playing a game @ PGE (in which OSU would not make any money) benefit OSU women's bball, gymnastics, soccer, volleyball etc.????

so playing at PGE park, is that really a smart move?

you can't compare baseball to football.

Goss holds 3,500 +
the Civil War/Pape Jam drew more at PGE than Goss' capacity.

I wouldn't assume OSU is underrepresented in PDX. I believe I read somewhere there is actually more OSU alumni in PDX. Just because you see less gear, stickers etc. around town doesn't mean a school is underrepresented.
UO does a better job of marketing in PDX for sure. That's probably why OSU seems misrepresented.

If I'm not mistaken, all of OSU's games were televised last year, most of them nationally.
From that standpoint OSU has been quite visible.

I am being assured that the new PGE Park remodel will be an amazing venue for PSU football. :D

Can't wait for the actual drawings to come out.

Don't tease us like that. Assured by whom?

Doesn't indicate if we'll be displaced for the 2010 season or not.
