Pistol Offense vs Spread

Can someone please tell me what the difference is? It looks a lot like the spread offense, except you run more. Watching Nevada vs California play and they kept saying it was a new offense and how a ton of teams are adopting it.

Somehow having the receivers block on a running play, with qb at 4 yards and tailback at 7 yards deep doesn't seem that earth shattering to me.

It's my understanding that the running back is located directly behind the quarterback, as opposed to the running back being off to one side of the quarterback, so that the zone option read can go to either side. In the spread, the running back is usually off to one side of the quarterback. Not saying that the spread can't go either way with misdirection, but it seems that it's more illusive in the pistol. Also, the quarterback is typically closer to the line of scrimmage to give the option of 'quick hitting' run plays.

Pistol Offense is VERY Similar to the old I-formation veer that the old Nebraska teams use to run. The QB is at 2.5 yds of depth and the RB is at 5yds directly behind the QB. It allows for downhill running and good playfakes. During the Cal - Nevada game, UNR ran a lot of zone read option and triple option with cowboy pitchman (WR as pitch).
