Here was the take a few weeks ago. Don't think it's changed a whole lot. Yes, there are a few defensive starters out; yes, UC Davis thinks they want a rematch... until reality sets in.
What's changed? Teams are savvy to spreading the ball sideline to sideline, Nicholls ran zone early. How do you beat that? Throw deep off double moves, run the ball, take what they give you underneath, TE's. Reeder concerns me, last week it was obvious the strength of Nicholls D was the DL and Eag's didn't run off tackle with purpose until the second half.. playing to an opponents strength is so 1832 Clausewitz.
Assuming the ref's don't call back nearly every big play the Eagles have in the first half, the pressure the Davis LB's are likely to bring can be easily defeated, if they elect to drop into coverage the OL will open some holes and Eags will have to be patient with 4+ yards carries until the EB3 pops for the big play. Eastern has become a TO causing war machine. Criner and Hayes did a good job if they have to go again this week and 27 played lights out. Come out heads up, keep it in front of them and make tackles is the recipe on defense for success.
Eastern 49 - UC Davis 27
UC Davis is a very good team with more than a single weapon this season. Maier and Doss are still connecting, but UC Davis has a couple of RB's with over 1,000 combined yards an OL that has only given up 9 sacks and other receiving options from a multiple offense.
On paper the offenses look nearly identical. If you look at common opponents the similarities continue. Defensively, UC Davis has a solid team with active LB's. You have to like Moe Mason with over 8 sacks. They will bring some heat. Eastern's defense is deeper and has been more effective stopping teams from scoring. Numbers on the defensive side of the ball are surprisingly comparable from tackles, tfl, sacks etc..
EB3 likes playing at home and this will be his second "big game" of the season. Expect the OC to protect him by spreading the defense out with quick pass plays to the edge, getting the RB's engaged off tackle, using the middle of the field a little more and getting our playmakers one on one. Like our DB's to do a great job making a few plays to turn the tide. Expect the officials to call an even game considering the situation. Playoff feel in this one.
I like our chances. This could be one of those weird 15 to 17 games if the OL's don't play well or a shootout. Honestly, anyone's guess. I expect Hawkins to have some wrinkles on offense that will move the needle and I expect Eastern to just lean in and wear Davis down.
Go Eags! 44 -27
