POLLS (STATS & Coaches)

Super Hornet said:
I don't know why STATS hasn't posted to NCAA.com yet, but they HAVE put out the new rankings. We are #7, ahead of #8 IL State (5-2) and behind #6 Kennesaw State (6-1). The Kitties have bounced back to #9. Not so sure I like THAT so much. The Griz dropped to #10.

Here’s what is ridiculous. If the Hornets were to lose to CP this week, they’d fall beneath MSU in the rankings despite owning the head 2 head. Utterly ridiculous.

BHF makes a pretty good point. We IMPROVED against a more formidable opponent while the Kitties had a BYE, yet the voters saw things differently. Kinda weird, to say the least....

WK10 Polls are in

Only problem I have with both polls is that Kennesaw State is ahead of us. They have two NAIA games as part of their "Wins" total and have the 110th SOS out of all of FCS. Guess who has the #1 SOS?...yup, us. :coffee:

Polls don't mean anything guys. We keep winning and we're in the playoffs, it's that simple. One week at a time...

Since we've put ourselves in the position of a possible first week bye of the playoffs, it's absolutely crucial that we monitor the polls (not to mention the fact that it's fun). Top 8 seeds if I'm not mistaken gets a "bye" into the second round. That matters...

GAS: Kennesaw also plays in the Big South, which is a nothing conference now that they've lost Liberty and Coastal Carolina to the FBS. Their presence over us is pure ECB....

GAS: Just looked up Kennesaw's schedule. It's even worse than we thought. They have ONE FBS game, and that a loss to 3-5 Kent State, hardly comparable to Fresneck AND Danny White University. In FCS OOC play, they have wins against Alabama State and SW Missouri State, both of whom have losing records. All Kennesaw really has are some blowouts against in-conference flunkies, while we have blowout wins over three ranked teams.

This is disgusting....

Yeah, I know ... polls don't matter. But, still, it's the principal of it all. And demonstrates how bad these coaches and pundits are at this.

I get that SAC was lucky to win last week (Weber was lucky to win last week too!). But they were also 'unlucky' to lose their starting QB for the last game which is largely why the game was competitive.

Given that the Hornets have a dominating W over Montana and both teams have only lost 1 league / 1 FCS game -- there's no legitimate justification for having UM ranked higher than SAC. None at all.

I've got a bone to pick with the Griz in front of us, though I, too, put them there. What are the odds the Kitties fix that for us?

Nah, I'd rather see UM win their last 2 (along with Sac State doing the same) so that there will be a 3-way tie for the BSC crown.

Of course if Idaho State wants to then upset WSU and make it a 2-way tie, I'm ok with that too.

Most advantageous for the Hornets would be for Montana to beat Weber then lose to MSU. If Weber stumbles vs ISU in their final the Hornets would be sole BSC champion. Even if Weber beats ISU the Hornets would be co-champions, assuming we win the next two. Still don't understand how Montana ranks above us after the beat down
the Hornets gave them.

GL: The first playoff predictor (not sure why it hasn't been updated yet) was just last week, and it had Sac at #5 and the Griz at #8. And that's likely to change because #4 was SD State, which has since lost. Assuming the rest of the schedule plays according to Hoyle, I think it's going to be #1 NDSU, #2 JMU, #3 BBQ, #4 Sac, #5 Griz....

BHF: That would start getting into the outer reaches of the tiebreaker. What comes after H2H?

Well, I found the following from 2014 and I don't believe it has changed since then. But somebody correct me if I'm wrong.....

When two or more Conference members are tied in the final Conference standings, the tie shall be broken for purposes of determining the NCAA FCS automatic bid only, and shall be determined on the following basis:
1. Head-to-head Competition
2.Record against common CONFERENCE opponents in descending order
3. Record against common NON-CONFERENCE opponents
4. Sagarin Rating
5. Coin Flip

Here are the current Sagarin ratings at http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm

Montana 87
Weber St 90
Sac St 105

Well, consider me losing all respect or interest (not that I ever had any) in these ratings that could find a way to rate a team 18 spots higher despite a 27 point beat down and FCS losses being equal.

Utterly ridiculous. I mean, why did UM and Sac State even play if it don’t matter? There’s not enough difference in schedule and wins to justify UM being higher, let alone that much higher. It’s obviously a flawed computer system.

The playoff committee will value that head to head beat down - you’ll see tonight when we’re still listed above UM in their eyes.

I don't think head-to-head is as big a factor as record and SOS (and other fuzzy math logic):

Nevada beat Weber St 19-13, but:
Weber St 90
Nevada 111

Interesting, we are rated higher than Nevada, Vanderbilt, San Jose St, and Arkansas. Can you imagine rolling into Arkansas stadium as the favorite??

I can! With the big FBS conference shakeup on the horizon when the moratorium lifts, it sure would be nice to be wanted after a couple successful seasons in a row with momentum and some stellar recruiting under our belts!
