The win-loss column isn't looking good this year, but we are much farther ahead with Burton than we were with Glanville at this point. Hopefully we can pull of a upset against the Hornets.

Just trying to get a feel for the game and I was curious what some of you PSU fans think about it. How is the injury situation? Obviously PSU is a run first attack with the Pistol so I imagine that will be the game plan this week. I haven’t seen much of any PSU games so I really do know what to expect. It's obvious Burton has this PSU team playing hard and there isn't any quit in this team.

The Hornets played extremely well at NAU and had everything going. However, Fleming is inconsistent and can easily follow up last week’s brilliant performance with a horrific game. Hilliard and the OL have been good but can struggle at times. Our defense has been pretty decent but it’s not the best. They are aggressive and swarm to the ball. The kicking game will be about even. Diniz is awesome but I hear PSU also has a solid kicker too. I’m not too sure about the punting.

Here is to a good game and if any of you make the trip to Sac, I hope you have a good time and safe travels. :)

Hi Guys, hope some of you will travel down to the Capital of California this Sat. Is Kavanaugh for sure going to start against the Hornets?

SDHornet - With PSU's QB injury, the pistol offense sure looked very different last week. Howland doesn't run anywhere near as well as Kavanaugh, but he can throw, so they threw it 55 times last week. Not having a running threat at qb sure seemed to slow down the run game.

I may be crazy, but I'm expecting a close ballgame. Both teams have lost some very close games to really good opponents.

PSU has played a lot of teams tough this season. I am not expecting a blowout either. My concern is the misdirection the Pistol forces the defense to stop. Statistically these teams are evenly matched on offense, however as some of you have said, there is no telling how big of an impact the injuries will play.

Howland played the whole game last week and did nothing but pass (he ran a total of 7 yards). We can still use McCaffrey and will, but 40% of the Pistol is gone if the QB doesn't run. We can expect around 60 pass attempts, 30 or so made along with one or two interceptions. And believe it or not, we could still win. It'll be fun.

Defense is doing well so far!

Except that right after I wrote that, Sac St went for it on the 4th down and got huge yardage. And then the first TD. Whoops.

McCaffrey is looking good, over 150 yards rushing with 8 mins. left in the 3rd qtr. Should put him over 1,000 yards rushing on the season.

Viks sure are running the pistol quite a bit more this week.

Interesting seeing Shead returning kickoffs. Would love to see him break one today.

28-15 Final. We didn't deserve to win this game. I only saw the 2nd half and aside from one TD, PSU dominated. Our defense was able to step up and make stops which was huge, but PSU had the ball for like 95% of the second half. PSU will be scary once Burton gets some solid recruits into town. Best of luck the rest of the way.

Sacramento, CA - Not enough big plays for Portland State resulted in a 28-15 loss at Sacramento State, the Vikings' fifth defeat in a row.

PSU looked good on the stat sheet, totaling 374 yards of offense, and holding the Hornets to 308, but the difference was a few big scores from the Hornets and a few incomplete drives for the Vikings.

With the loss, PSU drops to 2-7 on the season, 1-5 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets improved to 5-4, 4-3.

For the second week in a row, the Vikings got off to a poor start. Sacramento State scored on a six-yard run midway through the first period.

Later in the quarter, Jeff Fleming connected on the big play of the half with Morris Norrise. The 43-yard touchdown pass gave the Hornets a 14-0 advantage.

The Vikings Zach Brown booted a 40-yard field goal early in the second period to get the Vikings on the board. But again, the Hornets drove 60 yards on nine plays, taking a 21-3 lead on a Fleming to Matt Carter two-yard pass.

Portland State began rolling on offense behind Cory McCaffrey late in the period. A 38-yard run by the Viking junior set up a five-yard touchdown by McCaffrey. A failed two-point conversion made it 21-9 Hornets at halftime.

McCaffrey had 104 yards by intermission and the teams were virtually even in total offense. However, the Vikings failed to get points on a late drive that had them at all the way down to the Hornets 11-yard line.

Portland State drove 73 yards on the opening series of the second half, but had to settle for a 34-yard field goal from Zach Brown. That pulled PSU within 21-12.

The Viking defense stepped up in the third period, holding the Hornets to two consecutive three-and-outs and no yards of offense. PSU's offense totaled more than 100 yards but had only three points to show for it.

PSU drove for another Zach Brown field goal early in the fourth period. The 44-yarder pulled PSU with 21-15. It also made Brown PSU's all-time leader in field goals made with 33 in his career.

Fleming made the play of the game midway through the fourth period. He sprinted out right then threw downfield to hit a streaking Chase Deadder on a 57-yard touchdown pass. The extra point gave the Hornets a 28-15 lead and sealed the win.

PSU got a career-high 187 yards on 33 carries from McCaffrey. Tygue Howland, making his first start in place of injured Connor Kavanaugh, completed 11-27 passes for 141 yards.

The Viking defense, rebounded from a poor start, holding the Hornets without a score for 30 minutes. Sacramento State, which had a ground game averaging 181 yards, managed only 68 for the game.

DJ Macarthy led the defense with six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup. Shane Melbo and Ryan Rau each made five tackles.

GAME NOTES: Brown made all three field goal attempts and is now 15-23 on the year. With 33 field goals he has passed the previous record-holder, Mike Erickson (22, 1985-88)… the Vikings have lost three in a row to Sacramento State... PSU plays its final home game next Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium. The Vikings host Northern Colorado in a 1:05 p.m. game.
