Football season is nearing. Fall camp open in just a few weeks. Every publication I've seen has the Vikings suffering another rough season in year one of the Nigel Burton era. I guess we will see.......

Anyways, guess the score for the Viks opening day game in Tempe.

PSU - 10
ASU - 41

I always like to be on the optimistic side of realism. I'm going to take your score and add on to our offense and have our defense subtract a bit more from their offense:

ASU 35 PSU 17

ASU's QB situation is a little questionable, but their O line is huge. I expect them to run nearly at will. D line questionable, but they've got some very good linebackers. We'll try a pass-run mix. 41-10 is probably as close as we'll get.

I don't think the D will be a big improvement like a lot of people are thinking, therefore I will add back that 7 points and tack on another 7 to ASU, but will stick with your 17 for PSU.

ASU 48
PSU 17

I just want the Vikings play, to really play. Play ASU like Idaho plays Washington. They score. They don't win nor likely expect to, but they provide a good game and accounting of themselves.

I hate it when PSU goes out there and just goes flat, as if they have nothing in the bag-of-tricks that will produce points on the board or prevent the opposition from scoring. One of my favorite PSU Viking Football plays is the memorable pass Brian Ferrigno caught (and then muscled his way in) against Cal. That's what the Vikings need: That Ferrigno Image that says Giant-killers, Tough-Tougher-Toughest, Scrappy-as-a-Gremlin, Killer instinct. The one that says we challenge you.

Remember Steven Spielberg's Gremlins? Not as big as people but they're feisty as anything and they could take a head off. Get nasty, just without the penalties.

I'm expecting Burfict to knock at least one of PSU's quarterbacks out of the game--certainly not the best start. Better outcomes will surface once the team gets into the groove of the new systems in the following weeks. I hope Brown can at least get the Vikings on the board.

ASU 55
PSU 3

55-3?! Come on! You can't believe tht ASU is THAT good! Yes, we'll probably lose.
But given ASU's last year record it's more likely to be 35-7 or something like that. Truth is, we have no idea how well PSU will be playing, what the new formations will look like, how well they can run them. ASU with its D I-A depth will probably grind us down, sure. We'll see how the fourth quarter looks. Both ASU and PSU will run more - it'll be a slow game.

Don't forget: NAU plays ASU right after our beloved Vikings do. Playing a common team at their place should be a fairly reliable rod of comparison between PSU and NAU.

In 2008, NAU lost to ASU in the first game of the year 30-13, a respectable score. Should we expect anything less for our team? This is effectively a tune-up game for ASU, so we shall see. The first game of the year is when Pac-10 teams are most vulnerable to attack. I would love it to be New Mexico all over again.

Comparatively speaking, one wonders which team will be relatively better since 2008, ASU or NAU? The first two outcomes against ASU are gonna be interesting.

Go Viks!

I'm going to go with 39-10, and those 10 PSU points may be in the 4th quarter with the ASU defensive starters resting.

Barring injuries, ASU may just have the best defensive line in the Pac-10. Oh, and their linebacker corp ain't bad either. Front seven wise, they are in the top three in the Pac-10.

Enter new offense for PSU. Quick hitters through the air are going to get eaten up by the LBs in a hurry, and I don't think that we'll really get to try the weakness of ASU's defense (secondary).

As far as the offense, ASU should be rotten this year. However, skewed possession time could prove bad for us on the defensive side of things of the offense goes three and out over and over again. If things aren't working on the offense, I'd love to see a CK or a Green in there to try to get a couple of drives that suck up some time to give the defense a break.

A 39-10 loss won't be bad. If the team plays hard, and doesn't give up, I'll be satisfied. There were games last year where it was pretty much over at the National Anthem.

Hopefully I'll be down in Tempe for this one. If others on the board are going, let me know. Maybe we can enjoy a beer or two in our Viking Green. :-)

If ASU has a lousy offense, maybe PSU can hold them to fewer than 30 points. Maybe our defense will score a TD on them and we can eke out some field goals and one offensive touchdown. Would you believe 28-20? I like to think shades of New Mexico.

Beer among Vikings is always good. :D

"Sophomore Defensive Tackle Will Sutton and Redshirt Freshman Anthony Jones are academically ineligible for the 2010 season."

Nothing major, but Sutton would have most certainly seen time against PSU. He's second at DT and played both positions.

3 of asu's probable o line starters on a shaky o line and offense have given up football.

call me crazy but you guys have a chance to beat asu. there will be no more than 40000 people at the game so it won't be an intimidating environment at all. i think it will be more of a 24-20 asu type win

Thanks for the enouraging words, azcat, but 40,000 people is pretty intimidating for PSU. Hope you guys will have a good season, and please beat Oregon!

haha well if you are even tied with asu at halftime i guarantee half of those 40000 will leave at halftime. so in the 2nd half you'll have a 1-aa sized crowd.
