So we looked average versus a top NAIA program, while UND took DII SDSM&T to the woodshed.

UND gained 653 total yards with the majority being on the ground.

I watched the highlights of the UND game, and SDSM&T had a terrible defense, especially with the DE play. We should be much better that they were.

I suspect this will come down to the battle up front in the lines. If we can minimize their running game, we should be in a pretty good position to come home with a win. If they move the ball on us with success, it's going to be a long Saturday.

Doh. Bad copy and paste on that.

By the way, didn't Stacy Collins, the Viks' Special Teams Coach last year, leave to become the head coach at SDSM ?

He did indeed. What a start.
UND will be a telling game. Can't help believing they deliberately ran up the score a little to intimidate us. But it works the other way too - they could be over-confident. The general word is that they're a running team, like Carroll. Does anyone here have their forum website?

All Big Sky school links are at the bottom of this forum.

Looking over the UND-SD-Mines game, some things do stand out.
In general: Mines was hapless and helpless when it came to defense! UND ran at will, but note passed at will too. Passing: Hanson, starting QB, and Hendrickson, backup, threw 18-20 for 283 yards. 18-20! Mines threw 20 of 34 for 118 yards. It may be that UND is a little soft on pass defense. UND isn't soft on rushing defense. Rushing: yes, UND rushed for 388 yards, mostly carried by Miller and Sparks. Mines rushed for 43 yards. UND's rushing defense is very very good. But note that UND only pulled off 1 sack (and 5 TFL). And UND did run up 10 penalties for 97 yards.

It's hard to draw conclusions from a blow-out as drastic as this one. But it looks like what we've all concluded already - We have to stop their rushing game and break through their rushing defense. Passing may be the solution. McDonagh has to step his accuracy up a notch.

:agree:

PDX, you couldn't be more right.

UND will really test our run defense, which I suspect will be much improved after week one. The Alerus stadium (indoor arena) is unlike anything the Viks have experienced for some time. Very, very loud with the student section slamming, screaming, and stomping. McDonagh will have to keep his cool, the OL alert to signal calling, and yes, he has to connect with his receivers. Getting off to a fast start would help a lot.

One thing I noticed with regard to our game against CC was that the Viks were going deep a great deal, and several of those attempts in the first half were thrown on the east side of the field with the sun in the eyes of the receivers. Kieran was throwing long, tight spirals. Another week of practice, especially with all the snaps under center now as the starter, we hopefully will witness a substantial improvement in our air attack. I haven't seen UND play so I don't know if they play a lot of zone on D or man up a great deal, but with the variety of threats we have at our disposal, it would be a shame not to be able to take advantage.

Their starting qb (Braden Hanson) will be out for the game this week with an injury. His stat line for the game last week was really solid (13/14 for 188 yards and 1 TD). His backup only threw 6 passes, but completed 5 of them for 2 TDs.

By the way (totally off the subject), has anyone noticed that the Big Sky Forum has been hijacked for the last three days? I'd think the Administrator would do something about this.

Hijacked? Have you seen the deals you can get on Louis Vuitton hand bags?!?! :D

I rarely go over there, but I took a look and that is a spam haven.

Speaking of "Off The Subject", did anyone try buying peanuts at the game last Saturday (Jeld Wen Stadium)? Cracker Jacks are as close as you'll get (I counted 9 peanuts in the bag). I might have to sneak them in next game. Sorry, peanuts are a priority for me.

I am very excited for this game, as are most UND fans. It will be our first official taste of Big Sky competition even though it is a non-conference game. I did a little research on your team from last week and it looks like you started a true freshman QB! He looks pretty good for an 18 year old. Also saw your kicker Brown got hurt, hopefully he can come back because it would be fun seeing him kick indoors at the Alerus center on the new turf. UND's kicker, Zeb Miller, is pretty good, not as good as Brown but pretty solid. Would be fun to see those two going at it.

UND's QB Braden Hanson will be out for the game. Broke his fibula and will probably miss next weeks game vs. San Diego State also. The backup is a very good athlete but throwing can be an adventure.

I noticed your best receiver from last year, Monahan, was not in the box score from last week....is he hurt?

Other than Hanson I think UND is healthy. Hopefully, your guys all made it out healthy besides Brown. It will be a fun atmosphere this weekend. It is the annual Potato Bowl where Grand Forks has a big parade the day of the game, etc.

Here's to a good inaugural game between UND and PSU!

I read that Monahan didn't play due to a one game suspension stemming from some sort of a clerical error, so he should be ready for next week.

I know! Fans around me were complaining about no peanuts - SNEAK AWAY !

(P.S. I think I'll grab myself a big ol' bag of salted Hoody's and crunch away as I'm sitting on the couch watching the Viks take on UND)

(P.P.S. My wife is gonna make me vacuum later of course)

Why is this game called "The Potato Bowl"?
