North Dakota's Alerus Center is a nice little indoor multi use arena that seats somewhere north of 12k. One of it's charms (if you're the home team) is that the student section can raise the decibel level to an entirely new crescendo by banging on the seats and stomping and screaming. Now that's all fine and good except when the other team is on offense, and signal calling becomes an issue (as a matter of fact, there has been a deal of discussion on the ND forums about how many PSU penalties are expected as a result of the noise). I would think that the pistol would be even more susceptible since the QB isn't at the line.
Now, having said that, the Viks don't huddle, and I have noticed that when the QB looks to the sideline for direction before the play that the entire line often raises up and takes a gander as well.
I was at practice today and asked one of the asst. coaches how the Viks were preparing for this noise and he kinda looked at me like it was a stupid question (that's my take, he may have just been caught off guard by the question) but he responded with (and I'm paraphrasing) "We take care of business and don't give them anything to be loud about".
OK, but this isn't basketball where you just take the crowd out of it. If a visiting team has the ball, the home crowd, given the opportunity, will make it miserable on the offense regardless of the momentum. In other words they can affect momentum.
So where do you think the Vikings stand with respect to this tactic ?

"I was a little bored today so I looked up the Portland St game against Carroll College on the web and watched some of it. I did not come away thinking that PSU looked anything special. I was expecting more I guess, I know they weren't using their full play calling potential in the game and all but they didn't appear to have superior athletes all over the field. They have some good ones but nothing crazy and not an abundance of them. I am now fully expecting a win. "
scooter said:Marty, I think you're right. My question I guess is this - are we, by benefit of the formation we run, and the process of play calling, and the speed with which our offense lends itself to, less or more susceptible to the distraction?
And if we are affected more, what action do think the coaching staff will take to minimize the problem?

jas said:I have yet to see anything about the extent of Zach Brown's injury, but I have read a couple of things that have said that he's out for today. On oregonlive today Ian Ruder said, "The Vikings will be without all-league K Zach Brown, who injured his knee in last week's opener. WR Nevin Lewis, LS Kameron Canaday and DT Tomasi Molesi have also been held out of practice."
Still crossing my fingers that it's nothing major.
