POCATELLO, Idaho – It was a big, tough, gutsy win Saturday for the Portland State Vikings.
Down 11-0 early, down 35-34 late and having to overcome 21 penalties for 209 yards, the Vikings rallied to get their first win at the Kibbie Dome since 1999.
Quarterback Connor Kavanaugh willed, or at least ran, the Viks to their second win in two Big Sky Conference games this season. The senior from Lincoln High scored PSU's first four touchdowns on runs of 33, 43, 5 and 43 yards. He finished with 212 rushing yards on 12 carries (17.7 average), while completing 6 of 11 passes for 102 yards.
Running back Cory McCaffrey warmed up late and scored both Portland State TDs in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner on a 34-yard burst with 41 seconds remaining.
The go-ahead score came after a bad punt snap by Idaho State gave PSU the ball in Bengals territory. The Vikings got a 2-point conversion on a run by Kavanaugh, giving them a seven-point lead.
Cornerback Mike Williams intercepted an ISU pass to end the home team's last gasp.
PSU improved to 3-1 overall. ISU fell to 2-3, 1-2 in the Big Sky.
The Vikings, who had lost six consecutive conference road games, return to Jeld-Wen Field on Saturday to take on fellow Big Sky leader Montana State (2-0) at 1 p.m. in a battle for sole possession of first place.
