Portland State Knocks Off #7 Gonzaga, 77-70

We'll be lucky to keep him at the end of the season. At the very least, I'd expect his salary to go up. And I don't kow about the RPI, but we'll surely bounce up a couple notches in the Mid Major rankings.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP)--Jeremiah Dominguez scored 25 points and Portland State upset No. 7 Gonzaga 77-70 on Tuesday night for its first win over a ranked team since it reinstated its basketball program for the 1996-97 season.

Portland State (9-3), which relied on a short, quick lineup, managed to outrebound the Zags 39-30. The Vikings kept the lead by hitting 12 3-pointers.

Gonzaga (8-3) was coming off an 88-83 overtime loss to No. 2 Connecticut on Saturday that resulted in the Bulldogs rising one spot in the Top 25. But they looked sloppy against the Vikings, committing 11 turnovers, missing layups and shooting only 42 percent.

It was the Zags' third home loss since the McCarthey Athletic Center opened in 2004.

Props to the Vikings from a Lumberjack fan. My dad's a Gonzaga alumnus and I was telling him that your team's the real deal. He's sitting upstairs muttering obscenities to himself now. I'll admit I'm a Gonzaga fan but this is good for the Big Sky Conference as a whole.

Congratulations!

By the way, all PSU fundraisers should get on the phone early and often over the next few days. Nothing opens the pocketbooks like a big win.
Yes. Something tells me that our planned new arena just got a little nicer.

Jeremiah Dominguez scored 25 points and Portland State upset No.

Portland State, which is 1-11 against nationally ranked teams, broke a 10-game losing streak to Gonzaga.

Gonzaga (8-3) was coming off an 88-83 overtime loss to No. 2 Connecticut in Seattle on Saturday that resulted in the Bulldogs rising one spot in the Top 25. But they looked sloppy against the Vikings, committing 11 turnovers, missing layups and shooting only 42 percent.

It was the Zags’ third home loss in 58 games since the McCarthey Athletic Center opened in 2004.

The Vikings, the defending Big Sky Conference champions, endured a roundabout trip to Spokane after winter storms closed a portion of Interstate 84. They bused up to Seattle and then across the state to Spokane, arriving Tuesday.

The teams exchanged the lead most of the second half.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Dominic Waters and Dominguez gave Portland State a 65-61 lead with 4:06 left. Julius Thomas’ basket made it 67-62 in favor of the Vikings.

Gonzaga’s Josh Heytvelt hit a short jumper, and Austin Daye’s steal led to Jeremy Pargo being fouled on the break. He made both free throws to cut Portland State’s lead to 67-66 with 2:40 left.

Portland State again threw the ball away and Pargo grabbed the inbounds pass, slammed it home and was fouled. His three-point play gave Gonzaga a 68-67 lead with 2:16 to go.

Waters’ runner tied the score at 69 with 1:45 left.

Gonzaga turned the ball over on a possession arrow after Heytvelt’s shot stuck against the rim.

Phil Nelson’s 3-pointer gave Portland State a 72-69 lead with 44 seconds left. Pargo missed on the other end, and Portland State rebounded and Waters was fouled with 30 seconds left, making both for a 74-69 lead.

Gonzaga’s last home loss was to Washington State last season and they had won 10 straight at home since.

PSU definitely out played GU. Great win. You deserve the win, hands down. I'm a big Zags fan, and they played like c r a p . They don't deserve to be #7.
Congrats, again! :D

I was just at one of the Baylor fan forums, and while before they were not taking us very seriously, they are looking at this as a wake up call as a potential threat.

Thanks for acknowledging, sulu. It was a good game, even though Gonzaga was certainly not playing at its best.

ESPN just gave PSU a nice shout-out. Including a brief (but favorable) "Who is Portland State?" intro. ;)

Can't say anything that hasn't already been said! Viks really aren't afraid of anybody.

Anybody else notice how hard it was for Craig Ehlo to get Jeremiah's name right?
