As Coach Burton states, "the more you win, the bigger the games become." Go Viks!

Another great article from Ian:

Portland State football: Vikings making progress despite penalties

I would like to say that we should win the game this week, but you never know with our team. UNC has gotten a lot better as the season has worn on, so you never know what they're going to be able to do.

I heard coach talking on the radio today, and what he said made sense.....even though I know he has to be unhappy with the penalties. He said that personal fouls and offsides, those sorts of penalties are troublesome, but he is much less concerned with holding penalties. His rationale is that if you start harping on the guys about those sorts of penalties, they will start over thinking, and not play with the reckless abandon that you need.

They do need to find a way to cut down on the penalties, at some point it's going to cost them a game or two....I think you could make the case for both the Montana schools.

Let's go VIKINGS!, let's go VIKINGS!, let's go VIKINGS!

Let's put pressure on the selection committee by winning out! Go Viks!

Heart attack city! Another one of those "didn't play well, but won" games. Must play much better next week against Weber State.

Kavanaugh leads Portland State past Northern Colorado 23-17, playoff hopes still intact

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/kavanaugh-leads-portland-state-past-northern-colorado-23-17-playoff-hopes-still-intact/2011/11/12/gIQAXg3xFN_story.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Connor Kavanaugh had 270 total yards and threw for a touchdown, Zach Brown kicked three field goals and Portland State hung on to beat Northern Colorado 23-14 Saturday to keep its playoff hopes alive.

Justin Monahan had nine catches for 71 yards and a touchdown and DeShawn Shead had a 74-yard interception return for the Vikings, winners of four straight.

Seth Lobato threw for 293 yards and one touchdown for Northern Colorado.

The Vikings (5-2, 7-3 Big Sky) struggled offensively against the Bears (0-8, 0-11). They managed only one touchdown, a six-yard pass from Kavanaugh to Monahan late in the first half, and field goals of 51, 46 and 30 yards.

They didn’t seal the win until Shead stepped in front of a Lobato pass and ran it in with 3:54 left.

Northern Colorado took a 7-0 lead on John Burnley’s nine-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

That was ugly as hell. We should not have won that game; UNC took it to us, and we couldn't stop them at critical times.

"That was ugly as hell. We should not have won that game".

Yet, we did win. In past years, we would have lost. The difference this year is the attitude of the PSU team. The true sign of a good team is when you are having a bad day and you can still manage to pull off that "W".
Yes, it might have been ugly but ugly still got the job done. I'm impressed with the new mind set of this team.

I didn't say that we were bad. It's just that we got really lucky several times; that chop block call saved our skins.

I thought this was sort of a trap game for us. Fortunately we pulled it out.

I agree with pottystop. These are the games that we would normally lose over the past four years.

The radio call on the pick six by Shead is awesome.

Can't sugar coat this one. We did not play well today against a team that has yet to win today. Regardless, we won, and the playoff hopes continue for another seven days.

Sounds like CK took some hits today.

I thought this was a trap game also. And it almost proved true. The Viks probably don't deserve the win but I am ecstatic the W is in our column. But it was a very unsatisfying win. The offense has really fallen off the last two games. I feel like we are really missing Corey. The offense should have put this game away but couldn't kill the clock. That is the big difference between us and Montana State. They killed the final two minutes against us.

Also I would like to see the stats for red zone conversions. Seems like we are always coming away with FGs instead of TDs. Our execution and play calling need improvements before Weber State.

The Red Zone offense is killing us Every time we get there, we seem to stall out due to stupid penalties that then push us out and force us into 2 and long situations or predictable runs that gain us a yard if anything.

Wow. That sucks for UNC. I hate that we won on a wrong penalty call.

Yeah...me too. Even though we should have blown that game out. Definitely sucks.
