Portland State @ Sacramento State Thread

Well guys and gals, it will be interesting how this game will play out. Remains to be seen if Smith will come back this week, ditto for Hilliard. White proved in the drive that scored the TD to pull it to within 5 that he can play.

The question for us will be how our secondary reacts against the Run and Shoot because the way they've played the past two weeks, they have shot themselves.

We'll probably need to wait for the blog early this week to find out about injuries. Sure would be nice to see Brown and Pedersen suited and able to play.

The Run and Shoot has been shooting blanks. In the last 6 quarters they played going back to the UC Davis game, they've scored a total of 12 points. That's 2 points per quarter. Whoopee! Meanwhile the defense hasn't been stopping anything. WSU lost to Cal 66-3. We lost to WSU 48-9. We would lose to Cal 114-12.

Smith and Hilliard got banged up in the CSU game. Smith has an ankle issue and Hilliard had a slightly separated shoulder.

Ouch...and coming from a supporter, I know it must be hard for you guys. I don't understand why PSU wanted to go away from a system that Walsh had and that in my mind would have nearly contended for the BSC title last year. Makes no sense to me.

Walsh's offense was more predictable than The Farmers' Almanac.

The Run & Shoot was not what sank us last year, as we led the nation in passing. It was the move to the 3-4.

All I know is we better score more points against Sac State than we did against Davis or WSU. The offense should be scoring in the 30s at least and we need to produce points in the second half.

At this point I'd say just go with the hot hand. Give one guy three series, if he's not clicking, then switch. Both guys appear to support each other and just want the team to win. Go with the hot hand Mouse, feed the fire.

What would you guys think of using Kavanaugh a little bit? I am not suggesting that he start or receive substantial playing time, but it might be interesting to use him for a few plays (no more than 5 or so) where we take advantage of his running ability. He already redshirted, so there is no worry of wasting eligibility. Would the run and shoot offense preclude using him with a little trickeration? It seems like he could come in handy on two point conversions, especially.

I agree. We need to give him some game experience and it would help to shake up the opponents defense if the QB were able to scramble.

The end of the Wazzu game would have been perfect to get him some reps.

I thought about this very idea during the Western Oregon game. I think it would be a very effective option when the Viks are down at the goal line. Hope Mouse is thinking the same way.

There was a bit in the podcast today about this. Sounded like Shackford has torn ligaments. Not sure how serious the tear is. Thank goodness for our depth at corner with Jackson. I think we'll be fine if Jones is out for a game or has reduced reps.

What is Brown doing at corner? Odd. At least he's suited at practice.

Also, sounds like there were a few shoulder injuries, but those guys will probably just play through the pain.

I hope the defense is keying on hitting Hilliard hard and high. It isn't that I want him to get re-injured, but I feel that sore backs tend to shy away from contact, and thus don't get the effort yards.

Should be an intersting game.... I agree with several of the points made above.

First-The 3-4 Defense has been very weak under Glanville. Not sure if it is a personnel thing like last year, a play calling thing, or if it is a tenure under this scheme thing... But we are getting killed and probably could not stop most highschool teams with the state.

Second-The QB thing is really not that big of a deal... One has a great arm and lacks confidence and the other has a weaker arm and seems to be over confident at times. I think that this just boils down to reps and expereience in a gametime situation. What I wouldn't give for a senior QB who has 3 years of this scheme under his belt. I am not a fan of this 2 or 3 QB thing that Oregon and others are running. We really need to try to find our 1 guy and stick with him. If this is Kavanaugh let's go with him, if not save him... To predicatble to bring him for a few plays defeating the whole concept of a trick play or trickery.

Finally- I am quite sure that there are other backs besides Hilliard. But.......... Hilliard is the starter and is the guy that the Vikings need to focus on. Knowing he is banged up and will probably not be the foucs of the offense helps the defense out, game plan wise.

Go Viks!!!
