Hey, at least the rain held off....
Just got back and have some comments about the game.
Offense:
Wow. Shotgun. Never thought I'd see it. What an amazing turnaround for the O line on protection and how White saw the field from shotgun. Looks like Brennen is back under center for the shotgun. There were a couple bad snaps due to this just being put in place. On one, it was on the turf and White picked it up and found a short route. Let's roll with shotgun the rest of the year Mouse. One thing we should not do is run that shuffle pass five times per game. Maybe once or twice. By the fourth or fifth time, the defense knows what's coming and stuffs it.
On the receiving side of the house, we had some great routes being ran. In addition, we had some great catches that kept us in the game, and some bad drops that put nails in the coffin. Joseph stood out as being not afraid to go up and grab one over the middle with the heat coming down on him.
Defense:
Oh man. No pressure + secondary not knowing where to play + missed tackles + 8 dollar beers = not good. Schantz going down seemed to be a big blow to the defense and it was horrible to watch as his family and friends sat in front of us while he was down on the field not knowing if their son/brother/friend was going to get up. He was playing to prove something yesterday and was on his way to a monster game. I really hope that he's okay, the local paper seems to paint a picture of a season ending injury. Our defense took one step forward against Sac State, and about five steps back yesterday. Horrible is the best way to describe it with the only exception being Senn. The corners we're getting killed on trying to defend routes and the lack of pressure resulted in big plays when the secondary actually did their job. Also, I've never seen us give up so many 3rd and long conversions. It was brutal to watch our '3rd and break-down' defense.
Coaching:
The game was over when we missed the 41 yard FG in the second quarter. Seriously. The mighty MO had shifted the way of PSU when we forced a punt and moved the ball. The 14-0 start that made this seem like a blowout was seemingly going to turn to a 28-21 game as we were gaining confidence. Missed FG and an SDSU TD made it 35-14 and the game had slipped away. I'm not saying we'd have won this game, but we most certainly should have gone for it on 4th and 2. This is not the NFL, and we don't have a kicker making a million a year that is on the hook to put 3 on the board. We need to go for that 4th and 2 being a D1AA team on the road against a D1A team.
