Portland State @ UC Davis Thread

UC Davis Offense

QB: #12 Greg Denham is the new kid on the block. He's very talented and extremely accurate with the ball when he has time. He tweaked his knee in the preseason and sat out against San Jose State. Vs. Central Arkansas he had pressure on him for what seemed the entire first half, and struggled. In the second half GD did much better, almost coming from behind to win the game on the last play.

Offensive Line/RB: Seems to be an issue at the moment, we have not been able to run the ball well yet this season. Apart from RT Reggie Mason, the entire offensive line is returning for their 2nd, 3rd and 4th years as starters. My guess is we're just not firing off the ball like we should, or we're not mixing the reps with #9 Trombetta and #40 Tucker, Tucker had NO carries in Conway, and we can't figure out why.

WR's: #1 Chris Carter had a career game vs. UCA last week, #2 Brandon Rice and #8 Bakari Grant are both big time pass receivers. #6 Chris Miller is the RSr. who is leading this group.

TE/H Back: #35 Dean Rogers and #18 Brad Bispo are both underutilized weapons in this offense...Rogers is more of a blocking TE with exceptional "running people over" skills, while Bispo can go downfield and stretch the defense a bit more.

UC Davis Defense

DLine: Anchored by the only DT on the Buchanan Award Watch List, #99 John Faletoese, we also have returning DE #94 Patrick Michelier getting a lot of tackles early on, and ex-Boise State transfer #48 Steven Wulff getting a lot of early attention...though the early success of the DE's is largely due to double teams on Faletoese.

LB's: Our strongest unit I think. We return a lot of talent from their rookie seasons in 2007. Look for #54 Mike Morales, #36 Mike Healey and #28 Tyler Pringle, they're all making a lot of plays.

DB's: Obviously, the most important part of the Aggie D besides the pass rush this Saturday. They're playing well, but against the run and shoot, who knows, it's pretty wide open. The biggest improvement we've all seen down here is the tackling. We're almost doubling our solo tackling pace of last season so far, the arm tackles are gone. Senior FS #32 Nero Evero is directing traffic back there...Nero's brother Ejiro is currently a defensive coach with the Tampa Bay Bucs. CB #7 Jeremy Scott is also playing well.

OBVIOUSLY, tough to figure out how PSU will look in Davis with the win over Western Oregon. They put up a lot of yards, but we'll see how they do under the lights down here. We hope to put up a good crowd, but school isn't in session just yet, so it might be a bit dry in the student section. Hopefully 10K, we'd rather have 12.5K every game though.
 
Don't know what was effective for the Aggies against Central AK, but since everyone's got Trombetta pegged as the go-to guy, and the O-line can't open the holes, the Aggies better have something better than that deep slant middle route with a hail mary heave they were so proud about last year. PSU's defense is the real deal and the secondary rarely makes mistakes.

Should be a good game. AggieFinn, lemme know if you're gonna be there.
 
The defensive line and linebackers are excellent for the Aggies. The secondary has been a weak spot for several years but I think they are looking sharper this year. The big difference I see on defense is that they may have learned how to tackle. Last year many big plays (especially Cal Poly) were slipped tackles - sometimes multiple ones on the same play. I am now more worried about punting, special teams in general, the offensive line, and possibly RB ( may be coaching - should use more Tucker inside, Trombetta outside). We also seem to be lacking a killer instinct on the coaching staff. If we get ahead, we try to run out the clock way too much. Plus, penalties, penalties and more penalties.
 
I predict a close game too, but I really don't know what to expect from the team after a week off and a step up in competition. Don't want to speak too soon, but the lack of injuries may be the key to them winning games like this.
 
I think sense the game will be televised and Davis beat us in the home opener last year, should have the viks looking for revenge. A win on tv will help attendance for the EWU game and hopefully give the viks more attention in the local media. The viks defense will be the key to victory against Davis. Hopefully the viks can return home with a winning record to face a tough EWU team.

Ha! What, the Viks lead the series 6-2 right now...give me a break, if anybody's looking for revenge or a sense of belonging at this level it's the Ags!!! We'll see how both teams come out, the run and shoot is wide open, if we don't get any pressure on the QB and force Hubel to check down quicly, we could really get picked apart...on the other hand, we tend to have a better run game at home, which is what we'll need to do to stay in it, kill clock with long, sustained drives and keep that Mouse Attack off the field! Looking forward to a good game!

I'd agree that the Viks will be looking for revenge. There was a ton of hype, advertising, and excitement going into the season last year. New coach, new systems, new uniforms, new energy. There was an opening game buzz in the air that Viking supporters hadn't seen in a while. Considering that we were up 17-3 in the game and rolling along for the most part, leaving the stadium with a loss felt like I'd been given a swift kick in the gut. I would suspect that those players on the PSU squad that were around for that loss last year would feel the same way...

That being said.... The past is the past once the opening kick goes up in the air, it's anyone's game this year.

What sort of a crowd are you expecting? Sellout?
 
Kick in the gut was right. Going into that game, even with the loss at McNeese, you felt like you were witnessing a real turning point in PSU history, only to leave that game with a wait 'til next year attitude.
 
Can anyone tell me where is a good place to watch the Portland State - UC Davis game on comcast in Portland. Is there a good place near the campus? Or a bar/restaurant. Thanks
 
Three great options come to mind:
1) Cheerful Tortoise - right next to campus, college bar
2) The Kingston - right next to PGE park, great pub grub
3) On Deck - in the Pearl with outstanding seating and TVs
