(01/02/2009) FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Big Sky Conference’s men’s basketball “Game of the Week” on Altitude Sports & Entertainment tips off its second season this Sunday as defending Big Sky champion Portland State takes on Northern Arizona in a rematch of last year’s league championship game.
The contest from the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., begins at 2 p.m. MST. It can be seen live on Altitude, as well as Comcast Sports Net Northwest. Altitude is available on DirecTV channel 681 and Dish Network channel 410, as well as many cable packages in Montana, Idaho, Utah and Colorado. Jeff Friedman will handle play-by-play duties with former Weber State and Idaho head coach Joe Cravens providing color commentary.

Portland State has grabbed national headlines recently, following its upset of seventh-ranked Gonzaga on Dec. 23. The Vikings (11-4) were selected by ESPN’s Dick Vitale as his “Team of the Week” in his weekly column on ESPN.com.

Portland State is led by reigning Big Sky MVP Jeremiah Dominguez. The 5-foot-6 senior guard scored 25 points in the victory over Gonzaga. He is one of five Vikings averaging in double figures.

NAU senior point guard Josh Wilson needs just four assists to become the fifth player in league history to reach 600 assists in a career.

Portland State beat Northern Arizona 67-51 in the 2008 Big Sky Championship at the Rose Garden in Portland. The Vikings advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Portland State compiled a 26-7 record during the calendar year of 2008. Portland State has won 15 straight games over Big Sky opponents.

Altitude Sports & Entertainment will televise a Big Sky regular-season game each of the next nine weeks.

Series History and Notes...
NAU and Portland State have met 30 times with PSU leading the series 17-13 and 15-12 since the Vikings joined the Big Sky conference. PSU swept the Lumberjacks last season, including a victory in the Big Sky Tournament. PSU has won four consecutive overall over the Lumberjacks.

Honest question: Why does Polis ever get playing time? We have JD and Waters, maybe the two best point guards in the conference on the same team! Is it that hard to keep on of them on the floor at all times? I can see Polis on the floor in a position where we have serious foul trouble or absolutely need a three at the end of a half, but neither was the case in this first half against NAU.

It is so hard to watch PSU in close games against teams with inferior talent. Even with poor first half defense and poor shot selection, PSU is going to overtime.

What a gutsy performance by this team. I was drained watching this game. I can't imagine what it must have been like for the team. This is the kind of game that championship teams win. Winning this game at the end of a long road trip is tremendous. This effort took a lot of mental toughness.

Dominic Waters is special. He deserves to start but it is so effective having him come off the bench.

What a game.

I was about to write us off after the first half, but I figured there was no way NAU could keep shooting over 60% for the entire game, so I thought we may have a slim chance.

Amazing that this team won considering that the tank seemed to be on empty the entire game. Great effort to start the 2nd half and get back in the game. Hope the guys are sleeping soundly on the way home. JD and Waters played over 100 minutes combined. :-|

3-0 feels pretty good right now.

Vikings Down NAU in Four Overtimes

Portland State and Northern Arizona opened the "Game of the Week" on Altitude Sports & Entertainment with one to remember Sunday.

Portland State outlasted Northern Arizona 92-91 in four overtimes in a game that aired live on Altitude, as well as Comcast Sports Net Northwest.

The Vikings, who moved to 3-0 in conference and 12-4 overall, trailed by 16 points at the half, but rallied to force a tie at the end of regulation. Junior guard Dominic Waters scored a career-high 41 points to lead PSU. Waters became the first Sky player this season to score 40 points in a game.

Senior guard Jeremiah Dominguez scored 22 points with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win.

The four overtime game tied for the longest in league history. It was the seventh four overtime game in conference history, and the first since Eastern Washington and Weber State battled through four overtimes in 1999.

Zarko Comagic netted 18 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for NAU. Josh Wilson scored a career-high 25 points and had seven rebounds and seven assists, giving him 603 for his career. Wilson now ranks fourth on the league's all-time assists list.

Wow. That was one for the ages.

NAU's free throw woes continued, a defensive lull in the second half, some untimely turnovers....these definitely played into the final outcome but Waters, nearly singlehandedly, just wouldn't let you lose. The Jacks punched PSU in the mouth. The Vikings came right back with the same and made plays at the end to win it. Kudos to them.

If NAU can carry that intensity over then I'm positive they'll be in the thick of things come season's end. Adras can coach and always gets a lot out of the players he has. Our season isn't over yet.

In the end, possibly one of the better games I've ever listened to on the radio. NAU's announcer sounded on the verge of an emotional breakdown at the end. I'm looking forward to the rematch on bigskytv.org in the near future.

I don't predict an undefeated Big Sky Conference season for the Vikings but it's safe to say you're the favorite right now to win the league.

Best of luck, Vikings.

Looking forward to NAU coming to town for the rematch.

Didn't Bone seem PO'd after the game in that TV interview? Maybe he was just tired or he was deadpanning, but he seemed awfully irritated.

Maybe he was upset because we should have put NAU away in the first OT.

He could have been upset because we should have put NAU away a couple of times. On the other hand, the guys just wouldn't give up. We have to remember that we are playing at 7000 feet and at the end of a long road trip. PSU just showed a lot of guts pulling this thing out. NAU played an unbelievable game. Any other visiting team would have been packed it in. PSU showed the real mark of a champion to pull that thing out. NAU is a really tough place to play. We have 6 remaining road games. If we split, we are 5-3 on the road. And I think we can do better. But we still have to protect home court and last year we were lucky to win a couple of home games.
