Portland State @ Washington State Thread

God, they are getting torn apart by Cal, what a beating! Makes me sad on the one hand as I may soon be a postgrad Cougar at WSU Vancouver, but looking two weeks ahead I can't help but getting my hopes up. WSU really hasn't looked good so far this year. Of course, the fans will be seriously pissed after this game and Martin Stadium will be hell on Earth in two weeks. Just what our freshmen players need in their third college game ever...

They look terrible in all aspects of the game. Those points they had last week came late in a blowout, so you know they were against a 2nd and 3rd string defense, and tonight they have 3 points thru three quarters.

Depending on how we look next week, we may just have a shot.

You can never say we don't have a chance against a team that loses by 63 on their home field. WSU is prime for an upset.

WSU is #118 in scoring defense and #117 in total offense after two games, so if we're going to clip a Pac 10 team, this is our shot. Maybe a better shot than Montana had when they beat Oregon State in the late 80s or early 90s.

What exactly is the problem with WSU? I know they would probably be the worst team in the Pac 10 anyway, but is it because Wulff is installing a new offense and he doesn't have the horses to fit his system? On defense, what kind of scheme do the Cougars use?

I think one reason is that they sucked last year too, then add in a new coach, new systems, losing seven football scholarships, losing some players, and it all adds up. I think Bill Doba left the cupboard a bit thin talent wise. If you struggle to recruit, being in Pullman and having the smallest stadium in the Pac 10 doesn't help.

They run a 4-3 on defense.

Wazzu problems started when they hired Doba and did not seriously look for a head coach when Price left. Doba was allowed to hang around in Pullman because most of the booster like him as a person. Doba was a nice guy, but not a good recuiter or head coach. WSU will be a better football team in the future and lets face it they don't expect to go to a bowl every year. This coug team though is by far the worst that I have ever seen. The defense that was bad last year does not look like it improved this year and the offense has gotten worse. That being said the fans up in Pullman will be the loudest the viks will hear all year and we will have to play mistake free ball on both sides in order for an upset. I know a lot of coug fans and they know if they drop a home game to us that the cougs will not win a game the rest of the season. No matter what I think this will be one of those games that goes down to the wire.

WSU Football | Staff tweaks line, defensive backfield

After a draining, disheartening trip Friday to Baylor, WSU players probably just wanted to lie down. But Sunday, coach Paul Wulff made it...

Surprisingly, WSU's pass defense is not that bad. It could be that nobody bothers to pass on them since their run defense is the worst in the country at 330 yards per game. Normally, this wouldn't bode well for us, but since our short passing game actually is our running game, I think we'll be alright. Bobby needs touches. It would be nice to see his combined rush/reception numbers somewhere between 12 - 15.

I think turnover margin will decide this game. We'll need to have it in our favor to have a shot. WSU is the worst in the Pac 10 on turnovers, and we're the best in the Big Sky in forcing them. If we can eliminate our own, that'll put us in position to win.

Sounds like the crowd for the game is going to be pretty small (18-20k actual), so noise and intimidation shouldn't be a real factor...

I would think that PSU could have a chance with WSU this weekend but after watching UC Davis roll up 590 yards of offense vs. the Viks, it ain't gonna happen. All WSU needs to do is pretty much play a straight up offense. Mix pass with run and they'll roll up 600 yards of offense too.

The scary thing is that WSU is under big time pressure from it's fans. They'll be gunning for a blow-out and they've got the Pac-10 talent to do it. I'd almost rather be playing an Oregon State that isn't so desparate.

Interesting game coming up…. I am hopeful, but realistically we will get worn down and outscored in the 4th. Think back to OSU 2 years ago. Close came going into the third, by the time we got to the 4th, our guys were dragging and OSU ran up the score.

I am really hoping for a few things though….
1. This game needs to be competitive. If we want a shot at other legit teams within the Pac-10/WAC/Conf USA etc. etc. we need to show that we can compete a bit.
2. It will be interesting to see how this whole QB thing shakes out for us. I am not sold on Hubel yet. The guy’s arm still seemed weak to me. Great on the 10-15 yard slants, but weak when he needs to step back. Will have to wait and see how he handles their star on defense Greg Trent. The guy has a boat load of tackles at LB for the Cougars. Can our line protect Hubel and if not can and will he scramble?
3. The defense is going to run and run and run again. I want to see how conditioned this group is. Do we have it in our defense to play with WSU while playing a 3-4 with the offense that we run? Our offense is meant to be quick meaning the defense will play more, meaning they need to be in shape. Is the Defense ready for Brandon Gibson who had 8 catches for 128 yards against Baylor.
Should be a good game. I think it is premature to say that WSU is a bad team. They have played Cal, OK State and Baylor. OK state and Cal both are getting votes week to week and have nearly broken into the top 25. Baylor is sitting mid 70’s in the rankings and handled the Cougars though…

Not if we replicate the 3rd/4th down conversion percentage that we did at UC Davis. 3 of 12 won't cut it. We'll always lose the TOP battle, but if we can't do better than 25% on conversions, the defense will be on the field way too long.

Being mentioned on espn.com: good.
Being mentioned on espn.com because you're playing the worst BCS team in the land: good, I guess.

wazzu's defense is ovbiously horrible...but the lb isn't too bad but he's probably the only legit d1 player on there D...our offensive line should handle the rush, the midle tackles are some of the worst ive seen in a long time and the DE's are a little fast but considering how quick we get rid of the ball i dont think they will be giving us much trouble and the secondary hasn't seen WR's like ours yet so they will take a while to adjust to the little guys.

there offense is a dumpster too but i have a feeling there going to just try and run it up our gut most of the game seeing as thats a big reason why ucd got us...that and the deep middle passes....so i will expect them to run alot between the tackles bucause i think we can realistically keep up with them on the outside....i really think we have a chance to get them and I dont want to sound mean but basically take advantage of a team that is probably already spiraling into a deep depression....hell i would be too if i was 0-3 and lived in pullman lol
