Because of my coaching background, I am always looking at positive growth indicators in players and coaches. Recently I have given some accolades to Coach Collins and his growth. Those are off the table. I do not condone the profanity that I see on this message board, but I agree with everybody who has stated the obvious, Collins and his entire staff must go -ASAP! I have just heard of Boyer belittling a couple of upper classmen. I do not believe in violence, but I wouldn't put it past a couple of these young and impressionable kids to give him a fist sandwich.
Though I want these kids to get a win, a small part of me wants them to lose so that Collins gets fired. I can't believe that I said that.

My comments in red reflect what I was thinking as I read your post:

It's on, it's on! Those are off the table. Oh, thank God! I agree with 100% with that sentence. I have just heard of Boyer belittling a couple of upper classmen. Thanks for the good post (and the early scare of where I thought you were going with it. :thumb:

One of the last strategies of a losing program is to blame it on the youth of the team. Relating that to our OC...
I just realized that Boyer has been saying the same thing about "how young we are" for the past several years. The hope is that people from the outside will give him a break about the losing record because of the youth. UNC definitely has some very talented young players, but you can't look to them to carry the entire load. When these younger players play next to experienced and older players, their development is enhanced. For example Reick, as talented as he is, he still acts like a pouting schoolgirl when a play blows up or he is told to sit it out because of a suspected concussion. If Boyer and Collins didn't treat him like "the greatest thing since sliced bread", maybe one of the older players could take him aside and critique his behavior when he is pouting like a school girl. Just a couple of years ago Boyer was saying how we were going to be great when our young players became older. Yesterday it was about Graham and Miller, today's version is about Reick and Knipp. If by any chance Boyer is still here in a couple of years, both Reick and Knipp (if they are still around) will have limited playing time and wondering what went wrong, as UNC continues to lose games. Like all successful businesses, referrals play a vital part in marketing and repeat sales. In college football that translates to satisfied student/athletes who have graduated, parents and family who saw their sons grow under the mentorship of the coaches they trusted in, and alumni. That is not happening at UNC. When I here how Boyer continues to treat the upper classmen, it is sickening.
I have to say something about Tempo offenses...
I find it interesting that offenses who run tempo slow it down when the need arises, like running out the clock or playing against an opponent who is quickly putting up points against your defense. Boyer either has no clue or he has something over Collins and the DC. Probably both.

It's funny you mention those players....word is they are told all week long plays will revolve around them...practice revolves around them...at least around Miller...the team's number 1 receiver..yet we get to Sat and he isn't thrown a single pass until we are down so far, you would think he was a third stringer. Go figure that offensive plan. Instead, Boyer and one assumes Coach Collins played a string of receivers who at best , dropped, bumbled, and missed passes that should and could have kept us in the game or at least closer than we were...this Corp of coaches, offensively and defensively don't seem capable of planning and acting on an effective course of action- as well as shifting as necessary should the original plan not be as effective as thought...

Just watched the coordinators press conference. My theory of Boyer using the "youth" excuse was validated. Boyer again talks about how the "upside is huge" for the younger players and how he is "excited for the younger players." All he talks about is excuses. I wonder if he consults with the receiver coach about who to play at WR. Or does he talk to the OL coach about who to play. I know damned well he talks to the RB coach. Did anybody notice that both Cartegena and Graham got zero carries. For sure Reick and Davis are probably the two best backs, but for leadership sake, you just can't bench them. Boyer does not want any of the older experienced guys in there because it messes up his excuses.
The only solace about the entire situation is that the longer Boyer remains as coach, the further down in the coaching ranks he will end up. My bet is that he will be an asst. QB coach in a Cleveland junior high school. Let's keep the players in our prayers that they stand tall and understand the big picture.

Going into this Portland game I'm worried about something I heard.. a first string, well respected sr WR has left the team and numerous players are pissed and have turned up wearing this player's gear in support! Apparently Boyer is involved... what is going on??

After the second game, Boyer started limiting playing time for the upper classmen. 3 weeks ago they were all told that they were no longer starters. The current starting offensive skill players are all freshman with the exception of Davis (sophomore). that is why Collins and Boyer are always referring to the team as being young. That is also why Boyer referred to the offense's lack of experience. The experienced players are all spectators. Team Captain Malcolm Whye fifth year senior is 2nd string. After the NAU game Boyer verbally abuse a player in front the team, coaches, Dunn and parents. The senior receiver quit on Sunday. Boyer should have been fired Monday morning.

Good God, this is out of control. Someone needs to grow a pair and burn this staff to the ground. What a goddamn disgrace.

Earliest would be end of the season, buuuuuuutt I feel that since Dunn has shown to have no spine or balls about making a tough decision. Since there has already been 4 wins he'll continue to be one of the most gutless AD's that UNC has had he'll just accept that this season is good enough and probably give the head Dumbass another 2 year extension. UNC will be stuck constant state of loseing for a while.

Where did you get this information? I'm not saying that it isn't accurate, just wondering how you found this out.

Came from first hand witness. there was a couple hundred present. If you want to confirm, ask any player.

Wow! verbal abusing a player?? in front of parents, Dunn and other coaches??... how can this sit well with anyone especially the AD??? What's it going to take to get Boyer out of here? something worse than verbally unleashing on a player in front of people??? Hope the best for these players STUCK with this guy.... no one sounds like they are safe.... especially when they introduce the "possible" "most likely" starters for the home games.. has anyone ever found that as a insult to players???

This situation is ultimately Collins fault for not managing his assistant coaches. He has created an environment that does not lend to positive communication between the staff or between the staff and players. Numerous players say that they are afraid of bringing anything related to football up to Collins and Boyer.
The bottom line is...
Boyer is using the ONLY tool he has left to create an impression that he is a capable OC, whether that means keeping his job at UNC or getting hired someplace else. And that tool is playing the youth card. In other words, he is forsaking the kid's student/athlete careers for his personal wealth. He is in the wrong business. Just because he was a jock and loves sports (as well as get a degree in the appropriate field) doesn't mean he is suited to be a coach. He has been an unapproachable coach since he was at Mesa State. In the old days, a head coach would take him behind the woodshed and teach him a lesson about taking advantage of kids.

Keep your heads up. For what it's worth, the Vikings were in complete disarray at the end of last year, with no light at the end of the tunnel. If it weren't for the fact that we had an interim AD in place who didn't want to step on the toes of any incoming AD and make a permanent hire, we probably would never have seen our resurgence this soon. It's amazing what it means to a team to have trust and confidence displayed from a coaching staff. You just never know what the future may bring. Here's wishing you good luck putting it back together!

Thanks for the illustration. Actually it gives another reason why Collins was not ready to be a HC. Your new coach had 15 years experience as either an DC or OC prior to becoming a HC at Portland State. Collins was a DC for one year before getting his first HC position at Alcorn.
Just watched Collins press conference. Just like Boyer he is playing the "Youth Card." Shame on them for treating the upper classmen that way. I still can't believe that Graham and Cartegena didn't play ONE SNAP at NAU.
I saw the promo video for the Portland State game. The first clip has Leslie #83 in it. After spending all this time in the program, to be treated by Boyer like a piece of dirt is Shameful.

It doesn't matter. Collins and CO will be here for a while.

Beardown. ...I think that I know the answer, however, I'm curious as to why you feel like this group of coaches will be here for a while.

Because there has been no indication from the a.d. that there will be changes. Perhaps Collins will fire Boyer, but I'm not sure about that either.

There is an article in the Tribune about Leslie quitting the team, but no reason given and Collins was unavailable for comment. This article is damage control, because these coaches are feeling the heat. when its all said done, Boyer, Collins, and Dunn will be job hunting. No Beardown, I don't have specific knowledge, its just my guess.
