Portland State

Okay...so our Cats haven't hit the road in a few weeks and have gotten healthy playing at the Dee. The last time Weber was on the road they were in Portland and, thankfully for some late game heroics, were able to leave with a W. I haven't really followed the Vikings too much this season, so I am at a loss. I do know that we have a couple of shared opponents: Multnomah and Portland. Against mighty Multnomah the Vikings earned a W, winning 100 - 82 (Red Face--Geving-- played mostly bench players in the second half). While against the Pilots they lost 78 - 72. Weber beat both teams, but got to play the Pilots on a "neutral" court at the Moda Center (ROSE GARDEN). It did take overtime to beat them, after leading virtually the entire game (Rahe's slow down almost doomed the Cats again).

It seems, based off of mins played, that Red Face likes to play a 7 man rotation: Cameron Forte, Weber reject Calaen Robinson, Bryce White, Collin Spickerman, Isaiah Pineiro, Zach Gengler, and Donivine Stewart. The Vikings are lead by Senior Big Man Cameron Forte who averages 16/8 and get double digit scoring from Bryce White, Calaen Robinson, and Isaiah Pineiro. It looks like Red Face is up to his old tricks going with a team that likes to run and we can expect to see the Vikings push the ball. As a team the Vikings are 84 for 259 (here is some perspective, Weber is 137 for 362) from three and likes to take the ball to the rack instead of jacking up threes. Expect Red Face to be stamping his feet all game and pleading with the refs more than actually coaching his team (this is a given with Red Face Geiving).

No matter...with the Green Light shining in our players eyes for the entire second half because of that poorly placed stadium tron, and especially while we are shooting freebies, at the lovely confines of the Stott Center (I thought it was getting renovated?) it should end up being a hard fought battle.

PSU is not a good rebounding or shooting team. To win, they feel a need to turn you over. They will try to pressure us into turnovers. They will play at a fast pace. We all know that they load up with JCs and transfers. They have the talent to beat anybody in the BSC on any given night. It depends on their ability to play together as a team, long enough to win consistently. We know they will give us their best game. We just have to stay together longer than they do.

The funny thing about this is that our guys are probably eager to get back on the road. After a long home stand, guys are eager for a little variety.

I think that this will be a close game and may come down to who can hold it all together in the last few minutes. I like our chances. :coffee:

All three Conf teams we have played so far run a very similar offense, fast paced, so it won't be a surprise to us defensively. Portland State is gonna do everything they can to stop Bolomboy so our outside shooting is going to be key for us, and the players need to make them (Richardson I'm looking at you). Bolomboy and the rest of our bigs will get theirs, and hopefully it it turns into a freebies fest we make ours

GO WILDCATS

If we have 68 free throws again, we will probably win. However, that kind of a game just stinks. PSU has a little thuggery in them; I just hope everyone can keep cool heads. No stitches please, refs. Please look at something besides hand checking. Go ahead and call a million hand check fouls, just see the elbows and punches as well.

its mid jan and we have 0 road wins, but we have only played 3 games. knowing that one might assume we are duke or utah but we only had 5 ooc home games not 12 of them.

we had some nice neutral games and won them all but 1. i feel good about our chances to sweep this weekend despite our 0-3 road record which were against really bad teams, at least 2 of them.

sagarin:
132 Weber State (8-5)
247 Portland State (4-8)

rpi:
160 Weber State (151 for ooc only)
268 Portland State (318 for ooc only)

psu is 0-5 vs rpi 101-200 and 4-3 vs rpi 201+

psu is 2-2 at home. their only ooc d1 home win was cs fullerton. they have played 8 road games so far so not much at home yikes.

That's the problem with reading too much into preseason records in the BSC. Many teams play a horrendous road schedule and have few wins to show for it. It doesn't mean they will not be a good BSC team. You have to look at who they have played and where. NAU is a prime example of a tough preseason road schedule. They are not as bad as their record would make them look. Some teams have to play a lot of guarantee games to keep their programs afloat financially. :coffee: :yikes:

Umm...... we haven't won a road game yet. Portland and BYU were both considered neutral as well.

I'm not so sure that the BYU game was a neutral site. At least, not like the Florida tournament. It was part of the BYU season ticket package, they paid us a guarantee, they hired the refs, and they handled the TV broadcast. I believe that the Portland deal was similar.

It might be better to just look at how teams performed away from their home. It may be a better indication of how comfortable they are in leaving their home floor. In Florida, we were playing in an arena not designed for basketball. The back drop was such that it made shooting an adventure. That may help us in an arena like the Stott Center. :coffee:

Two should have been wins (Denver and UVU). NO matter, I like the work Baller.

When it comes to games like this where very little is known because it's so early into the conference season I usually look to Vegas to let me know how close the game will be. Currently Vegas has Weber favored by -4.0. So this game should be pretty close according to them.

I'm very anxious for the game tonight. How we play in this first conference road game will say a lot about this team in my opinion. Just a fantastic game by the bench on Saturday. We'll be difficult to handle if we can continue to get that kind of energy and consistency from them... But will they be able to take that act on the road?

I would rather the refs stay out of the way and let them play worked for us in the Gulf Coast tourny.go cats

we really need to try and pretend the uvu game never happened. it is the worst loss in the history of the program. it was actually much worse than a d2 loss but that could be another thread if needed but i hope not.

Regrettably, Big Sky Refs officiate closely at the Dee and favor home teams when we are on the road. It absolutely sucks, but it is what it is. The Big Sky has the worst refs in the country and I think it is a source of pride for Dougie Fullerton.

I really feel bad for the players, they are taught a game plan they go out to perform at the best level they can and it all changes at the first whistle,it's all about the whistle. That aspect at times completely changes the outcomes of games all we can do is sit and watch and get pissed.

Halftime, Weber up by 7 (36-29) thanks to a big 3 at the end of the half by Cannon (great pass from Senglin).

Wildcats come out and just punish the interior D of PSU, five minutes into the 2nd half and up 49-31, up 18.

Good road win, Weber dominated the inside all game long, not particularly great shooting from outside, but Senglin hit some pretty clutch 3 balls. Bolomboy with 16 Double doubles out of 17 games. Kid is on a roll.

Now it's on to the Hornets of Sacramento State, Idaho State was up on them early in the game but Sac came storming back and ended up winning by 11 82-71. The Hornets are not the team they were last year, but they are still tough and it's a Big Sky road game which are always hard to win. But this Wildcat team is playing really good right now.

GO WILDCATS
