Drop all the speculation... :blah: :blah: :blah:! Our new coach will be ex Weber player, John L. Smith, current special teams coordinator at Arkansas. He wants it; is actively lobbying for it; is pulling out all the stops to get it!! I predict he will be the next head football coach at Weber State. :stir:

You mean this guy?

In all seriousness though, he wouldn't be a terrible option, but I don't think he's a top contender. A hot head like that would probably do more harm to the program than good.

We've all seen what name recognition does for a program with coach Mac. John L. Would be a great get. He did amazing work at Idaho, USU, and Loisville. He's always been good to Weber, and he seems to me to be a players coach

Smith is a member of the Grid Iron Club but I really do not think he would even apply. That would be pretty awesome to have an alum coaching.

Why isn't Ed Lamb from SUU being discussed? I think he would be a perfect candidate and he would think this job would be a promotion.

:bad:
He did cross my mind, but it would only be a promotion if he got paid more. I don't know if Weber's program is any better than SUU's at this point. They did beat us on our field, after all.

Mcbride @ 134k
Lamb @ 95k

No doubt it's a promotion, I'd bet WSU will have to pay our new coach between 150k-170k.

Facilities, upgrades, location, potential, and recent playoff runs, not to mention a stacked roster....

Steve Coburn? He's been successful, including going 53-7 in 5 years at Snow. But he was forced to resign there without any real explanation. Seems that he isn't the most likable guy. He was also the head coach at Ricks for 8 years, and was the head coach at both Ogden and Morgan High Schools. And he's a defensive minded coach.

Wow...are we starting to dredge the bottom of the barrel already? UTLC!! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL Pyramid of Success..

Sweber, I'm not pullin a wsufootballer and dis'in you, but coburn wouldn't be the coach needed to take Weber to that next step.

Patten Jr and Wazzu know what I'm talkin about.

Exactly... Not to mention a better recruiting base. Defensive guy, good guy from what I have heard, I just think it is a good fit even though I would love to see Clune come back.

This administration has a track record of finding up and coming assistants who have been associated with successful programs. I don't see why this hire should be any different. I think that they will consider a lot of options and select the best fit that they can find. It may be someone none of us have heard of. How many of us knew who Randy Rahe was, before he was hired? Bethann Ord is going to work out to be the same kind of hire. I don't think that there was a single person in Utah who had even heard her name.

I have total faith in this administrations ability to identify coaching tallent and bring them into the Wildcat family. :notworthy:

I agree, the search for a coach will be on a much broader scale than we are all thinking of. Not to say one of the coaches mentioned already are not good canidates.

Do you have a clue about what any of the coaches you listed you would like to see kept ACTUALLY do??? Apparently not based on a few of your suggestions...

Actually, I do.

Regardless, they are my opinions. I'm not perfect. So, if I forgot someone, or put someone on a list that shouldn't be, then; sorry. As has been stated previously, this is a forum. If nothing more, a collections of opinions. So, please share what you think. I'd really like to know. In all seriousness, I think Eck is a no brainer, but once again, that is what I think.

Why?

He knows the program
He helped recruit a number of the current players
The players know him
He knows how the program has been built, he was part of it, and I would bet, has a pretty good idea where the program needs to go, and how to get it there.
He is an offensive guy (even though our defense needs some seriuos overhall) who will get the most from our lines and offense.
Finally, he has already been at Weber and knows the culture, attitude, and expectations of the school and area.

I certainly don't want anyone thinking that I am "ripping on" your opinion. What I am trying to point out is that our opinions are much more founded when they are based on facts. I am merely suggesting that you may not know what contributions some of the people you listed actually make to the staff as a whole.

For instance, Kamaal. He was supposed to be a position coach when he first got here. He wasn't living up to expectations on that front, so he got moved to a general assistant for the defense. He still wasn't living up to expectations, so he got moved to Football Operations...

Dyson certainly knows football. But he is coaching out of his love for the game. As a result, he gets paid minimally and, therefore, spends minimal time in the office during the day as well.

Beck also is another person that is rarely seen around the office during the day or in the evenings...

I don't question the abilities of ANY of these coaches as far as their love of the game is concerned. But it is certainly not fair--or conducive to winning--when the bulk of the work is done by only a few.

I agree that Don would be a decent replacement. He is familiar with the program and a few of the players. My only hesitation is wondering if he is too close to Mac to make some necessary changes--specifically cutting some of the players who do not take their roles, their scholarship, or the team's success seriously. There are several players on the roster who are trouble--they are at the root of issues off the field, don't live up to par academically, and they aren't even impact players on the field PLUS they are lazy and have terrible attitudes. The fat needs to be trimmed. Is Eck going to worry about what Mac thinks????

APR is an issue for WSU football as it is. But I think that the University, the President, and Bovee would certainly be understanding if a few of these players were cut loose as a new staff comes on.

  I agree with the majority of your post. I appreciate your understanding of the situation, and really like your posts. Keep up the good work.

I keep hearing John L's name being thrown around. I'm thinking he will be coming back HOME!!

I also agree. Aaron Roderick still comes to mind as exactly one of those assistants. Eck seems like a logical choice as well. Who really knows, though. I wouldn't be shocked at all when WSU announces someone we haven't even mentioned yet.
