Post Game Reflections: Cal Poly

Game is winding down. Cooper Kupp just scored his touchdown of the game and there is only 4:30 left in the game as I write this. EWU leads 42-21 and Cal Poly is just not a comeback team. This game is over.

I just gotta say that I am absolutely impressed by every phase of the game by Eastern Washington. Cal Poly is a good team and nobody has bullied them the way we have this game. Our offense had a few hiccups, but even EWU doesn't play flawlessly every game. Cooper Kupp catches that easy touchdown and Gubrud cleans up a few third down throws, and we have absolutely buried Cal Poly.... instead we just rolled over Cal Poly which is okay too. Defense played exactly how we needed them to. Everyone has struggled against Cal Poly's offense. But our team kept Cal Poly out of the end zone which seems to be the characteristic type defense we have. I am okay with putting up big yards, as long as we keep the points off the board.

Special teams played well, but missed a field goal. Still haven't figured out the field goal issues, but at some point I think Beau will start going for it on fourth at any 30+ attempt. Statistically, we have a better chance of converting than if we rely on the kicker for three points. Aside from the missed kick, our coverage was great, our returns were great, our punts were deep, our kickoffs were right on target... kicked ass at every other department. Pretty happy about that.

I think if I were to give a game ball, I would give it to Antoine Custer. Guy played an absolutely great game and made the Cal Poly defense look like boys among a man. 7.1 yards per rush and 13 yards per reception (on catches near the line of scrimmage by the way) is an impressive game for the freshman. Can't wait to see him as an upper classmen.... well, maybe I can wait until after we win the national championship this year.

I really like this stat from Cal Poly:

THIRD DOWN EFFICIENCY 23% (3 OF 13)
FOURTH DOWN EFFICIENCY 67% (4 OF 6)

GOOD WORK DEFENSE

That's an impressive 3rd down stat. Not too concerned about the 4th downs. They essentially treat 3rd and 4th down the same way when they're in short yardage situations. If CP was a throwing team I'd be a little more concerned with that stat.

kudos to the defense, they played great. I hope some of the injuries sustained in this game are just minor and all of them get back on the field against ISU.

My thoughts as well. Cal Poly specializes in converting 1-2 yard situations and three of those fourth down conversions were on very short yard situations. It's a better sign that we put Cal Poly in those fourth down situations over and over and over again.

Impressive win in all phases of the game. Coop had a pretty bad drop but more than made up for it.

On another note, how about the women's soccer team? They're one game away from competing in the NCAA tournament!

Coop could break the Division I record for receptions next week. He's only 7 receptions away.

I'll be there to watch him do it. This is the last guaranteed chance to see him in action. Let's pack Roos on Saturday.

Great team win today.

One of the worst things about my job...I work on Saturdays, and the games usually start too early for me to get off duty...except next Saturday. Can't wait!

FIFY. :thumb:

It'll be great for Kupp to get the record at home. Also ironic that it'll be against the only other FCS school to offer him a scholarship.

Played well. Every team we've played since the week off have tried to shorten the game and hold the ball. Teams have been successful at grinding out first downs, but the D has been opportunistic enough to force turnovers. We'll be big favorites in the next two games and have a great shot at running the conference slate.

On a separate note, what the hell is up with Cal Poly's game production on Eversport? That was like something a pair of high school kids with iPhones could have done. Camera work awful, sound awful, graphics awful.... Eastern spends time putting on a good show for the visiting fans who view our feed. It would be nice if the other Big Sky schools would reciprocate.

I think it was the worst feed I have witnessed. Video was dizzying, sound kept cutting in and out, and you couldn't see anything that was going on!

Perhaps Cal Poly doesn't have a TV/Radio department? Oh well, it was better than nothing I suppose.

But on a positive note; when you could hear the audio, the broadcast team went to great extremes to mispronounce every EWU players name. Totally hilarious. I told my wife to listen when I saw Splendorio make his first catch and they did not disappoint. Sort of a "game within the game" to see just how they would pronounce names.
