I just gotta say that I am absolutely impressed by every phase of the game by Eastern Washington. Cal Poly is a good team and nobody has bullied them the way we have this game. Our offense had a few hiccups, but even EWU doesn't play flawlessly every game. Cooper Kupp catches that easy touchdown and Gubrud cleans up a few third down throws, and we have absolutely buried Cal Poly.... instead we just rolled over Cal Poly which is okay too. Defense played exactly how we needed them to. Everyone has struggled against Cal Poly's offense. But our team kept Cal Poly out of the end zone which seems to be the characteristic type defense we have. I am okay with putting up big yards, as long as we keep the points off the board.
Special teams played well, but missed a field goal. Still haven't figured out the field goal issues, but at some point I think Beau will start going for it on fourth at any 30+ attempt. Statistically, we have a better chance of converting than if we rely on the kicker for three points. Aside from the missed kick, our coverage was great, our returns were great, our punts were deep, our kickoffs were right on target... kicked ass at every other department. Pretty happy about that.
I think if I were to give a game ball, I would give it to Antoine Custer. Guy played an absolutely great game and made the Cal Poly defense look like boys among a man. 7.1 yards per rush and 13 yards per reception (on catches near the line of scrimmage by the way) is an impressive game for the freshman. Can't wait to see him as an upper classmen.... well, maybe I can wait until after we win the national championship this year.
CP gave their best in this contest. Super effort on their side of the ball and it goes to show just how good the Eastern squad is in all the departments that matter; size, strength, mentality, depth and execution... All this ON THE ROAD!
Defensive play calling..., coaches need to clean it up a bit but the players didn't take any downs off and stepped up in the big situations. Should be done experimenting at this point in the season. Good to see the effort of Jonah Jordan late in the game forcing a TO and Fettig was EVERYWHERE in this game. Tremendous safety play all around.
Offensively, Eags just continue to get it done. Is it safe to say, this one could have been a blowout without a couple of backfield ball handling events, a poor decision INT and two series where the play calling was EH..? It was obvious CP defensive backs couldn't hang with our WR's. Would like to see more pulling guard or H back leading into the holes on the run game. Think this would create more big plays. Awesome trick plays result in two TD's.
Team focus is AWESOME. Based on play to date, expect the players to be ready for ISU and PSU without letting down. Lots of nicks in this game and hoping nothing serious. Overall, this game was probably a B+ but given the conditions of being on the road facing a ranked and motivated team in CP, standard ebb and flow and unique qualities this opponent brings to the field of play... going with an A
