Post Game Reflections: Central Arkansas

Post your thoughts on today's game.

What a unconventional game for EWU football. It felt as if EWU was in control the entire game. Yet, Central Arkansas was within a couple of scores almost the entire game. It was as if I was watching a different team. Usually, the offense scores at will and the defense does just enough to earn a win. Yet, our defense did all the work and the offense put up just enough points to hold the lead (until there were two minutes left).

We are a team of high risk, high rewards. The fact that none of our risky plays paid off in the first half led to our really slow start. Turn those risky plays around, and this is a dominating win. I've never seen a team do such a good job keeping other teams out of the end zone like UCA did. So huge props to them. Probably the best Red Zone Defense I've ever seen at this level.

Hopefully the banged up guys can get healed for next week's game.

31 unanswered. Total domination in the second half, but also a pyric victory losing Kupp and Kamarcik.

I can't help but think if we had Zamora and Calhoun there's no way they would have had so much success running the ball early on.

As I mentioned in the game thread, I was really impressed with UCA's defense. They were very physical along the defensive line and their LB's and corners had good closing speed. As we've seen throughout the season, we were able to wear our opponent down in a variety of ways in the second half. And our defense found a way to stop their big running gains in between the tackles. Once we figured that out, the game started going south for them. I do think that if they had a better offense we could have been in trouble today.

Teams always move the ball early in games. I have no explanation for this. From the second quarter on, it was like a totally different D. The scoreboard looked closer than the stats, as Gubrud moved the ball all over. We basically just wore them out.

Sorting ourselves out early in a game will be the priority, as is getting everyone healthy again. I don't think we're dealing with any new, serious injuries.

Playoffs are stressful, and UCA was no joke.

Whoever we end up playing in the quarters, something needs to change with the injury situation. Even if just one of the starting LBs can come back we'd be in a better situation than we finished that game in.

I only caught the second half but I figured it would be a lower scoring game than we're used to seeing due to their overall athleticism on defense.

I noticed how much we miss Kupp inside inside the red zone. He's so good in open space. Minus maybe Shaq none of our other guys are as good in space.

The trick plays are starting to become really predictable. We didn't set up the reverse pass at all before we ran it. It's a good play, but I don't understand why we feel the need to run it every game.

Absolutely. Their red zone defense was awesome.

This x 1000. I'm hoping we get lucky with getting some guys back next week. Each win buys us more time. Going to Frisco with the majority of our guys healthy would be an awesome thing.

As the season goes on the defense is better and better. In the UCA game they were in total control. I was concerned about this game given all of the distraction going on now yet they were in control.

It seems it takes the defense a couple of series to lock the cross-hairs in, and then they just lock stuff down. I still have some concerns with FG kicking and the running game, but not every team is going to be as stout against the run as UCA.

That being said, with this offense and defense, I truly can see this team beating anyone left in the field. Our offense has almost always been championship caliber. Now we have a defense that will stop teams, and it feels awesome!

They were big on the line. Great adjustment. Best defensive game in years! Even without Zamora. Hats off.
Just finished our game and watching Richmond. The Spiders an reminds me of VA.

hmm, I don't think their qb throws anywhere near as good as VA.

More of his allusiveness than anything.

Interesting note on their QB - apparently they burned his redshirt to play in the UND game. They didn't have anyone else on the roster that could go?

The defense was solid and continue to impress me as the season goes on. My hope is that they play well enough next week to win the game and that buys us enough time to get some important pieces back for the semifinals.

After reading the Kupp interview from after the game in the Spokesman sounds like he is going to play. What a WARRIOR!

Moving on to the next round!!!

Played without 3 of our top 4 linebackers, lost Kupp for a half, and still won by 17!!!!

Great win and we are the only seed left on our side of the bracket.

Looking forward to thumping Richmond next Saturday!!a great day of football today!
