Post Game Reflections: Idaho State

Looks like we are in garbage time. Backups are in and we have a comfortable lead (one that we won't throw out like NAU).

I don't know what to say. We are leading 48-17 int he fourth quarter. That's a dominating win. Hats off to the guys for playing and winning another one for this program. Things look good for playoffs.

I think we all share a little bit of frustration with how some of the game went today. Right now we are -3 in the turnover margin.... by far the worst of the season. We had a lot of missed opportunities that would put us at 70+ points right now if they were capitalized. Not that I really want that high of a score, but we just need to be taking advantage of opportunities to score.

A -3 turnover margin usually leads to trouble, but luckily for us two things happened:

1. Idaho State is really really bad

2. Our defense played lights out.

I wonder of the kids are getting too settled with the idea that they are the best in the Big Sky.... but right now, UND is the Big Sky champion. We are playing next week to claim our share of the title. After that, we play teams much much better than Idaho State. The team just needs to get focused and fired up to make their mark on FCS history.

Exactly. As strange as it sounds, UND is the Big Sky Champs right now. We still have to prove we are worthy enough to share a piece of it on Friday. I'm pretty disappointed with certain aspects of this game. Honestly, we should have probably run ISU off of the field in the first half. Those turnovers are costly and we can't do that against better teams. The playoffs start this Friday in Portland.

They say a win is a win but this one shouldn't have been within 50 and I don't think we played like the #2 team tonight. The turnovers were bad, espcially the 2-3 that happened in the red zone. I hope we clean up the center exchanges because I can recall several fumbles this year that looked exactly like the two we had tonight.

The Eags play on Friday with one less day to prepare for the Vikings. Here's to a solid week of practice; we owe the Vikings big time for last year.

281 yards of rushing is a pretty interesting stat, especially when your leading rusher (Gubrud) had -6. The offense was a little off, but I chalk that up to the fact that we haven't come out with this kind of game plan all season. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

The team knows they didn't play their best game and left a lot of points on the field. We'll clean up those TO's

With all of that said, if someone told me back in July we'd be 9-1 at this point and playing for a share of the Big Sky title and a high seed in the playoffs I'm not sure I would have believed them. Heck of a season so far.

It's strange to be kind of upset about a win with that kind of point spread, but I'll echo the comments above. I didn't think we played particularly well on offense. Special teams and defense were very good. ISU has some playmakers on offense and I thought the D did a great job limiting their stud WR. Our QB really struggled in this game. I think against a better team Coach B might have made a change and halftime.

I hope this isn't the case. We're a better team than UND and we need to prove it next weekend by destroying PSU. There's too much on the line for any complacency.

Amen!

It was a strange game. It had a scrimmage feel to it. We were so much better that it almost felt like we stayed in second gear all game. And with that said, we dominated and won easily. The defense played very well; we were really agressive and attacked the line of scrimmage and (mostly) shut them down. If we wanted to nitpick, you could say we allowed the too many first downs. But really, our D was the best unit on the field all game long.

I feel for Idaho State. They play hard, but man oh man, do they have a lack of talent. And they were beat up coming in and even more beat up coming out. We won't get to see a match up with Sac State, but based on games we've played, I'd rank ISU as the worst Big Sky team I've seen so far.

And as previously mentioned, the turnovers were a problem. The funny thing was all three were just keystone kops-type dropped footballs. It wasn't like we made bad reads or had balls jarred loose, we just dropped them onto the turf.

Glad to see the reserves in after the third quarter.

The offense seems to have regressed over the past few games. Strangely, the defense seems to be the only unit that has steadily improved over the course of the season.

The defense played good and continues to improve. The offense played good but fumbled a few times. Not every game is perfect. Finish the regular season strong and get ready for a deep playoff run.

Academy award time. Did you see the flop by a Bengal when Hoffman was behind him? Hoffman was called for unsportsmanlike when he touched the Bengal on the back.
The refs really pooched that one! Got some video?

That one would have made an Argentine soccer player proud.

Same dude tried again a few plays later trying to get a late hit.

My brief thoughts on the game: Defense and special teams (save fg kicking) have improved a great deal as the season has progressed. Online is jelling and Custer is emerging as a capable back with tremendous upside. Kupp is the GOAT. Penalties are under control. GG had a rough go of it, BUT that is to be expected and couldn't have happened at a better time. Might end up being a positive. It came to a head against a struggling opponent and didn't affect the outcome. Provides great coaching tape and he can get it fixed and get another game against another down opponent plus a bye week to regroup and get ready for the 2nd season.

All roses over here! Hoping for a fun December (/January???)

Go Eags!

I think some of us just need something to complain about. Our offense has regressed?? We had 281 yards rushing yesterday and 4 turnovers and still scored 48 points. The D is playing fantastic right now and is getting better and better each game. This team is special. Period.

Congrats to Cooper Kupp, the GOAT. A once in a generation player and an even better person. Couldn't happen to a better guy.

If all football discussion was fluff, it would be boring. You are talking about four turnovers like they are incidental. However, we went from +9 turnovers on the season to +6 against a very very poor team. That's something that shouldn't happen and is worth pointing out.

I wouldn't beat up on the Eags for TOs, two were bad snaps. The most important thing is that the team finds a way to win. And the Eagles did that.
