Post Game Reflections: Idaho State

I think some of us just need something to complain about. Our offense has regressed?? We had 281 yards rushing yesterday and 4 turnovers and still scored 48 points. The D is playing fantastic right now and is getting better and better each game. This team is special. Period.

If all football discussion was fluff, it would be boring. You are talking about four turnovers like they are incidental. However, we went from +9 turnovers on the season to +6 against a very very poor team. That's something that shouldn't happen and is worth pointing out.

I was specifically referring to defend the red, however, I think I would need to see a consistent trend to be worried about it. No, the turnovers weren't great yesterday, but I'm not worried about it either.

I wouldn't beat up on the Eags for TOs, two were bad snaps. The most important thing is that the team finds a way to win. And the Eagles did that.
Wasn't that the back up center?

I'm not sure if it's our "backup" center, or 3rd string center. Jones was the original starter, but has missed most of the season with that knee injury. I believe Spencer Blackburn has been getting most of the snaps at center since then. DJ Dyer would be his backup...they burned his redshirt when Jones went down.

Everything depends on the lens you use to view. 9-1 is awesome, with another Big Sky championship banner that can be earned this weekend. I'd have jumped for joy if you told me that's where we'd be three months ago. Making the playoffs is goal #1, winning the Big Sky is the next goal, and winning the National Championship is the ultimate goal.

Now the focus is on getting deep in the playoffs. We won't be facing Idaho State or teams of that quality after next week. They're going to get tough. We need to get out of second gear to make a run, and we'll need to play better than yesterday.

However, it is a high class problem to point out negatives following a 48-17 conference win. It's quite a privilege that the team has earned.

In my opinion, the #1 goal is to win the Natty. Winning a conference title should just be part of that process, and a distant second. With the staff we have assembled, our recruiting, and our recent success we should be making the playoffs every season.

I don't know if it's regressed, but in some ways we haven't looked as sharp as we did in the first couple of games of the season. I'm thinking of the WSU and NDSU games where we looked damn near unstoppable. It could be that Gubrud played out of his mind in those games and since then teams have more film on him and have game planned for him more. That wouldn't explain the fumbles though. Who knows? We probably could have scored 60 or more yesterday without those red zone turnovers, which is a good indication of how bad a team Idaho State is.
