Post Game Reflections: Montana State

You do realize that OB set an offensive record today, right. Cupp had 13 catches and Hill over a 100 yds.
The defense held them scoreless for over 2 1/2 quarters. Come on guys they had two great plays. Just Two.
A Montana Freshman caught TD and plays for EWU. Montana lost big time to NAU.
Take a deep breath. This team is getting better each and every game. Please remember this team is very young but very talented.
Try and remember your expectations at the first of the season, we are way past that. What I like best about this group is their attitude, you watch the side lines and this team is as intense as the 2010 team. They just need to keep growing.
Have a great week because it is Grizzee week and the weather will be super. I may have to get to the field on Thursday and start formal Tailgating

I totally agree with this. Seems some are not satisfied with the fact that we are a missed field goal from being 7-0.

To be fair, I think many of us uber-fans just get really emotionally invested in these games. I know I hate every bad play our team makes, and every good play our opponents make. And for what it's worth, I was beside myself at some point in just about every game in the 2010 season.

Overall, I think that Murray kid is going to be a force. I agree with Dopa, I have no idea why they took him out, especially after one bad play. Show him you still have confidence in him! That being said, I was glad to see them wreck their own rhythm that way. He struggled at times with accuracy, but if he improves there, and gets stronger, he will be a really tough player to defend in future years.

Also, it felt closer and tougher than the final score indicates, even late into the third QTR. It seemed like we were keeping them alive. And as much as I appreciate the passing record being broken today, I am still really troubled by not have a really strong rushing threat. Gage was a lot more bottled up in his rushing, which IMO has been the equalizer in our lack of a rushing attack. But aside from a couple of decent runs, it really wasn't something I think a defense needs to game plan for. As a team, we had 76 yards rushing! I think our passing attack will be our bread and butter, obviously. And I love seeing Taylor call plays to get our playmakers, like Kupp, into the rushing game. That being said, as the season goes on, and teams have seen what we do, that issue could come back to haunt us.

I'm also concerned with the FG kicking. It feels like rolling the dice each time.

I thought the D really improved for the last three quarters, aside from some random big plays. But I didn't see any games this weekend in which there weren't any big plays made on defenses.

Solid win. Nice adjustment on D in the 2nd quarter and awesome aggressiveness. Loved that we put all the Redshirts in in the fourth and they went out there and continued to make plays with an INT and BIG hit from Evergin on third down.

Honestly, the only concerns where the penalties and the fact that a couple of teams now have game planned to take away our deep threat mostly successfully. It's infinitely more difficult to have 12-15 play drives without mistakes than 6-10 play drives with a couple of big plays, hence more penalties and FG attempts.

Like that Eags tried to mitigate with "trick" plays designed to have Kupp throw, but those aren't bread and butter plays. GG is taking care of the ball so far, but youth and impatience are due to rear their ugly heads. A solid rushing attack would help pull in those deep zones alittle. Looking forward to the game next week on the Inferno and just how much the OL improves and adjustments the coaches will make. Could be GG is ready to make a few audibles when he see's man coverage

Here is my take away after this weekend slate of games.

EWU is so far ahead of every other team in the big sky, holy smokes! They all looked bad. NAU is ready to start streaking, and the Griz looked worn down after all those patsy games.

I still think if we find a conference loss it will be @ Cal Poly, not against the Griz next week.

GoEags!!

Anyone listen to the post game show? According to Larry, the Cats had no redzone scores, because THEY NEVER GOT INTO THE REDZONE.

I've been as vocal a critic of the D as there is, but if you throw away two big plays, they were nails yesterday.

And let us give thought that not every single play against us has to be a defensive breakdown. Teams make good plays...the opponents and us. Those two big plays were great plays. The pass play was set up to perfection and I don't fault the "D". Watched it with several ex players and they said that from the get go(cause I don't know shit)..then the QB run was a super athletic move...not really a defensive breakdown.

I was hoping to see us keep them under 400 yards and 30 points. Both missions accomplished. :thumb:

But...that was against an absolutely terrible offense and...we are still susceptible to runs up the middle. With a +5 turnover margin, you should win comfortably.

Not being negative...just realistic.

A little too much chest thumping over beating a winless Big Sky team... We played fine overall, but once again didn't play all that great in the first half. They moved the ball fairly well, but showed why they are winless with a lot of silly turnovers.

Davis, UNC, NAU, and MSU have all played over their heads early in the game. After the Bobcats' luck ran out yesterday, they were held scoreless for nearly three quarters. I watched the Griz game. Eastern is bigger, faster, and deeper in all aspects. Gustafson is a statue. Their receivers are a big drop off from the Griz of old, as is their defense. Gubrud should be able to slice them up. A win against Montana would set the table for a downhill ride to 10-1. I know everyone thinks that a slip up is inevitable, or that our defense will somehow be exposed. But I believe this Eagle team is far more talented than every team remaining on our schedule.

Eags beat a team they should beat. Take away the two big plays of approx 150 yds and they were held to about 200 yards of offense, 5 TO's (a mark of a poor team, not silly) and 3 points. Glad for our team and the maturity they are showing when imperfect and still getting it done. Get your head right.

:thumb: This is a deep team with good leadership and focus. Based on the board the past few weeks, more and more fans are buying that idea. Looking forward every game coming up. It ain't over, but we have the horses to get it done. Go Eags.

I think we are the most talented team in the Big Sky and among the best in the country. We could and probably should win the conference and be a legit contender for the championship. I view through this lens.

However, there are still a lot of areas of opportunity. We look out of sorts defensively in most first halves of games. The good news is we continue to win. If we can shore up some of these problem areas, we've got a lot more winning we can experience.

this is my main gripe this year. it seems like every team comes out of the tunnel and plays their best half of offense against us until we figure out how to slow them down.

eaglesfootball Yes, in in this game it took one quarter and 3 minutes. Ya, the defense still needs improving and the O line is fast and big, but still in diapers. What great fun to watch, and so much more potential.
