Post Game Reflections: UC Davis

Wow, what a rollercoaster of a game.

Second quarter we were hot garbage. The first blame goes to Gubrud's odd decisions, but in all honesty, it was a whole team flounder. UC Davis broke through our line on every offensive play and lots of dropped balls. Our defense switched to a zone coverage that left the center field wide open and we missed tackle, after tackle, after tackle.

Not sure what was going on, but as usual, our coaches made the necessary adjustments. We scored 35 points in the third quarter and had such a commanding lead by the fourth, everything else was garbage time. What changed?

1. Cooper Kupp: I think the first half of the game we decided to lean more on spreading the ball to all of our receivers. Cooper was in on a lot of plays, but nothing like the second half. In the second half, UC Davis decided to try to play one on one with Cooper to cover the whole field. Bad decision. Cooper saw the ball almost every other play in the third quarter.

2. Offensive line: something changed with the offensive line. I'm going to need some help identifying what changed, but something was different. Did they just come out pissed? Did UC Davis stop blitzing? Anyway, Gubrud had more time to think. They even cleared some room for Custer to gain some yards. I think playing a lot more screens helped the O-line quite a bit. Maybe it forced UC Davis to think twice before pinning their ears back and going gun hoe to the quarterback.

3. Gage Gubrud: Coaches made the right decision. Gubrud is the lead guy and one bad quarter shouldn't put him on the bench. They did a great job showing that they had confidence in him and he showed he deserved it. Gage had a dominant second half and went to the bench in the fourth quarter with the respect of EWU fans.

In the third quarter, we forced two turnovers including a pick six. Eastern played far more disciplined and shut down the UC Davis momentum. It looked like we were still playing a lot of zone, but we did it right this time around. In the future, the linebackers need to play more disciplined. Aggression is good, but the second quarter was a good example of what too much aggression opens up. Our cornerbacks started hot, died, then rose from the grave to dominate.

Special teams was on and off today. I will mark this up as a good thing, seeing as they weren't just off as we've seen in previous games. The weird flub kick offs were unnecessary and gave UC Davis good field position. We had some seriously bad returns in the first half, but Custer started returning them for some huge chunks which was nice to see. The missed field goal hurt, and wouldn't be acceptable if we had a tougher opponent. Having Kupp back on the punt return was nice as well. Kupp has such a great football IQ and makes great decisions every time the ball is in his hands.

Based on our first and second half averaged out, plus the fact that we were playing a far inferior opponent, I would give the following grades

Offense B+
Defense B-
Special Teams C+

Offense-B (Only because the 1st half was sporadic).
Defense-C+ (Created some turnovers, limited them in the 2nd half).
Special Teams-C (We need to be able to get a FG from 25 yards out, but at least no missed XP's this game).

This was another strange game. We came out early and look dominant, fell asleep for a quarter and a half, and then imposed our will on them in the second half. We still have a lot of work to do with the offensive line and on special teams.

offense B+
defense C
special teams C

Overall, a B- performance.

It's better than a B minus. If Baldwin didn't run the clock out on back to back possessions at the end this could have been a 77-30 game. That's the best half of football we have played in many years!

Back from the game. I have to admit, I was pretty nervous at half time. We just didn't look like we had any answers for this team in that 2nd quarter and I was sure that Baldwin would put Hennessy in to start the 3rd. Coach B is a classy coach not running up the score, but I think we could have at least given our kicker some confidence by letting him take some shots.

Didn't think of that. Pretty crummy to leave a game 0-1 at field goals.

The grades seem about right, which is kind of funny considering the score. What's also funny is we could have laid another 14 on them and that wouldn't change.

I didn't think we'd see such a lopsided score in a game that we struggled in, but the Eags really played a good second half of football. I don't know what to say about our kicking game either than Descalo might be the best option to kick field goals.

I missed this little gem in the broadcast.

Already the FCS leader in career touchdown receptions, Kupp broke the FCS record for career receiving yards against UC Davis. His current total of 5,417 broke the record of 5,250 set by Elon's Terrell Hudgins from 2006-09. Kupp has a record 63 career receiving TDs, and is second on the all-time FCS receptions list (352, 43 behind the record of 395 set by Elon's Terrell Hudgins from 2006-09).

Offense gets an A. Some bad drives during the second quarter, but utter domination beyond that hiccup. We probably score 70+ had we not called off the dogs.

Defense gets another C. Pretty good over most of the game, but wretched at times. We saw probably the worst tackling we've seen all season. UC Davis had a couple of long runs and screen passes where we were in great positions and just couldn't make the tackles. #40 in particular had a couple of big whiffs, but found his sea legs later in the game.

Special teams continue to be a mystery. Punting and kick returns have been strong, but our inability to convert easy FGs is painful. In a bigger game, that shanked 32 harder might have been the difference between winning and losing. Not to mention we've already lost one game this year where the difference I regulation was a muffed XP.

A good effort all around, and we'll beat most teams playing like this. It would be really nice to make that jump from a C-grade defense to a B-grade defense, as that would make us incredibly tough to beat..

Special teams, F? Other than the missed field goal and a kick out of bounds what did they do to receive an F grade? In my mind an F would be something along the lines of muffed punts, turning the ball over, etc.

Ok, maybe an F is harsh. Punting and kick returns were good.

I just wish our kicking wasn't so horrid. Against better opponents our kicking game is going to be a serious liability unless we get it figured out. We're one made field goal away from being the #1 team in the FCS right now.

It was an odd second QTR. It seemed the momentum really swung with the Custer fumble (thought I don't know how much of it was his fault). Then, everything seemed to go right for the Aggies, and nothing went right for us. It was one of the most frustrating quarters I've seen in a long time.

I think that our passing offense continues to be incredible. Even with some challenges, they were able to get back on track, and score a bunch in a short amount of time. What concerns me is that we continue to struggle to establish a solid running game. I think there were glimpses of what it could be, but we don't rely on it much. I'm honestly shocked any defense is fulled by play action with us. I thought Wilson's running at the end of the game was exactly what I want to see. I don't know why he isn't utilized more. He's bigger, stronger, and more experienced than our freshmen. I'm not saying Pierce of Custer are bad. They show incredible promise. But it seems Wilson is able to be harder runner. I would use him and Custer as our one, two punch.

How can you give the offense less than an A when they put up 56 points?
How can you give the defense less than a B when they only give up 7 points in a half?
How can you give the special teams less than a B when they return 4 kickoffs for 153 yards, 2 punts for 32 yards?
Heres how;
the offense had 36 rush attempts, severely padded by few passes in the 4th qtr garbage time. Only 3.9 yds per carry. Your QB should not have almost 1/3 of your rushing yards. Jabari Wilson is more a power back than our "scat" backs and had 85 yds, again in garbage time. Until we have better balance between the rushing and passing games we are not an A level of offense. We are an A+ passing team and a D running team. overall B+
I think our defense is becoming outstanding. The first half was not that of a winning defense but in the second half they were dominate, and that is with key injuries to experienced players. As our young guys gain more experience the defense will continue to get tougher. We still have trouble stopping the running game but good at pressuring the QB and defending the pass. B+
Our punter had the day off  and thats a good thing. The special teams held them to 11 yds per kickoff return. It was a different day on kickoffs because we were kicking away from their outstanding return guy. B+
Proud to be an Eagle!

Good points. There were a couple of plays in the 2nd half where we used PA or a fake Jet Sweep that were pointless other than perhaps the timing of the routes is dependent on that extra second.

I think we were still beat up pretty bad on the line for this one. Will hopefully get a few back next week. Man...I'm not sure the bye could happen at a better time.

Even at full strength, I still don't think we're experienced and mature enough on the line to be much of a straight ahead rushing threat. Our big gains will be off misdirection, read option, and sweep type stuff. Just enough attempts to keep teams honest or pull them out of the zone a bit.

This is the BEST team in the BigSky. The second half against Davis is EXACTLY what this team is all about and the rest of the Sky should be shaking in their boots. Plus our training regimen is second to none. :)
