Post Spring Ball 2017

Nice to see some speed coming this fall with Elijah Dotson running a 10.76 100 meters at the State meet. We have not had that kind of size and speed for some time.

I've never seen Dotson play football but his great stats speak for themselves. As a HS track coach I have seen him at meets many times. The kid is impressive, fast athletic and powerfully built. He ran 10.76 in the 100 meters at the CIF State Meet on Friday. He has also high jumped 6' 2" which takes a lot of athletic ability and explosiveness especially for a guy of his build.
Great to have Elijah as a Hornet, could be one of our best pickups in many years.

This is good, with the signing of Joseph Ajeigbe (Duke Grad Transfer) returning Jountti, also thought Perkinson look good. Plus a whole O Line crew returning from a group that ran for a lot of yards in final 3 games. Hornets should be able to run the ball. This should help QB and the defense.

BOOM! 3-Star DT Niti Liu Commits to UCLA Football
Liu is the latest recruit from the “Angus McClure Northern California Pipeline.”

Angus, this is nice and all, but I could give a shite less about UCLA football.
Perhaps you should be sending these to Pres. Nelson as you obviously want the HC job.

There doesn't need to be a constant campaign for Angus to be the next HC when the job is not even open. But, he's proven himself top be an extremely effective recruiter and could easily transfer his skills to bringing in the top level of athlete that Sac State football can attract. Undeniable.

Sometimes I feel everyone on here says the Hornets have the talent but crappy coaches, in that case recruiting is not the problem. So in that case wouldn't you want a more X's and O's coach?

Or do we feel no recruiting the talent is the case? Then I hear that they do not recruit local talent. I see a lot of local names on this roster.

What does this team need? Is the answer everything?

Not everyone...I do not believe we have ever had the best talent in the Big Sky. I really don't know exactly how the Sac State football staff matches up with the other coaches in our conference. Anyone who says they do, is guessing or has an over-inflated opinion of their opinion. I do know there is no downside to recruiting better talent. The players will always have to be coached, but starting with better talent than the opposition is a HUGE advantage and that superior talent can make adequate coaches look pretty darn good.
As far as not recruiting local talent...every Sac State coach has heard that complaint going back to Ray Clemons. The problem is not ever going to be solved...too many moving parts. Many/most of the great local high school players desire to leave the area. Many/most local high school coaches say they want Sac State to recruit their players, but often times the players they want recruited (not their best guys) either are not good enough to compete or they don't fit an immediate need. The current coaches and some of the past staffs have put a great deal of emphasis on recruiting local talent, but there is an extremely intricate balance in recruiting that will always be open to criticism.

The team needs a miracle to have a hope of being competitive this year.

The program needs a competent coach with a clue. Looking forward to seeing who Orr brings in as HC for the 2018 season.

What do you mean when saying a coach with a clue? Can you be specific?

From the M-W site:

Definition of clue
1
: something that guides through an intricate procedure or maze of difficulties; specifically : a piece of evidence that leads one toward the solution of a problem

2-9, 2-9 pretty sums up the fact that Sears has no clue how to successfully win consistently in FCS football, even though he has the second highest budget in the conference, adequate facilities and fertile recruiting grounds.

I am willing to wait and see after the season. To many examples around the country of teams struggling for multiple seasons. Example would be our week 1 opponent (Idaho) if we are sitting 1-4 I'm willing to start looking

Not trying to work a constant campaign for Angus, but simply trying to keep his name out there, if an opportunity arises...

My guess is Mark Orr is going to push to make the program legit sometime in the next 6 months.

I hope he does...

Angus will always have name recognition as an ex-Hornet player and a successful college football coach. As soon as there is a job opening at Sac State, there is no doubt that he will be an immediate consideration...and rightfully so.

Since we're talking coaches here, we have to remember that a head coach is only as good as his assistants. We've had some quality assistant coaches here but the good ones always find greener pastures. At one time we had Johnny O (HC now), Daniel Del Prado (Special teams at Colorado), Andy Avalos (DC at Boise), Klay Adams (OL coach at Colorado) and Bush Hamdan (QB coach for Atlanta Falcons). I'm sure there are others, but a head coach has got to find up and coming talent and keep it for a few years while keeping his eyes and ears open for the next one to step in. Most FCS programs do not have the luxury of paying assistant coaches very well, so the HC needs to be ready for the turnover if an assistant is any good. If your assistants aren't going anywhere, it might be because they aren't as good as the HC thought they were.

And his 2 win seasons at Weber that resulted in him getting the boot from there. Macriss hired a HC with a track record of failure, the product we are seeing now should not be a surprise to anyone. Thankfully Macriss isn't making the decision on the next HC.

Excellent post. We found some success under Sperbeck and some of the coaches were hired away to better jobs. It will happen again when this program gets competitive once again, just part of the coaching carousel.
