Potential Head Coaches

Well that's that. Now starting today hope Best and company are working the portal..hard. Looking at rosters throughout the BSC teams like MSU, UC Davis, Idaho, UM, SS and even NAU are loaded with portals and transfers that are starters. This is the way and we need to get much better at that game.

The portal matters, not disputing that. I am not sold on using the transfer portal to fill the majority of scholarships. I hope we don't lose a bunch of players to the portal. We really need a quick turn around, otherwise we will likely be playing 2 money games a year to balance the books. Hopefully we can hang onto most of our key contributors. The changes to roster limits will create more opportunities to add talent through the portal. The question that remains to be answered is if our coaches will be able to identify the FBS transfers who can help us. Best has found a lot of hidden gems from juco ranks the last few years. The jury is out on the transfer portal but I would have expected more resulta based on the number of recruits. UC Davis and Idaho are primarily recruiting high school talent. NAU brought in a lot of transfers last year, it will be interesting to see that continues in year 2 with the new coach. We don't seem to compete with the Montanas very often for recruits anymore.

I'm still struck by the irresponsibility of anyone starting this thread. The keyboard clown had no idea of what he was talking. What purpose does it serve?
Wow, someone saying a head coach who is objectively doing a poor job should be replaced. So, "irresponsible". Yea dude we get is you're Best's friend or whatever, tell him to start having winning seasons and this won't happen.

Speaking of starting this thread. I made it after the SLU game knowing it would be a losing season, Guess what? Its been a losing season. Honestly, you're the one that has the fucking nerve to defend him after his 3rd losing season. Something that hasn't happened in 30 years.

Also, its a fucking fan forum what purpose does any of this serve?

For clarity on the portal issue I didn't mean we need more, I meant better portal players. For example we have 25 transfer/portal players. That is more than MSU18), Idaho(23) and UC Davis(18). The difference is most of our players are JC Transfers and small college players. UC Davis has 18 transfers/portal players from big name University's. and same for MSU and even Idaho. Players from those schools are starters and impact players. Yes we have some as well but not nearly as many. When I say work the portal/transfer players talking about bringing in players that can play...key players. We have lagged behind since this part of the game came into play...we weren't filling the spots of players that left with players of equal statue much less add more to improve our team...compared to the other schools. I believe it may also be true we aren't bringing in high school recruits like other schools but with that said maybe we do and they transfer out after we acclimate them after 2-3 years.

Agreed, quality, not quantity. Although I will say that we've gotten a few gems in the past couple of years like Wortham and Taylor.

Well Jeff Schmedding is out at WSU. For those that don't know, WSU lost the last 3 games to teams with losing records. I guess for head coach it doesn't matter since Best will get at least 1 more season and since EWU is too poor for a buyout probably 3 more seasons. He'll probably want another FBS job, question is can he get one?

Hire him as a DC post haste.

Was our defense markedly better when Schmedding was here? I guess I missed that.
Yes, it was. At the very least, his defensive high points were far better than anything we've seen in a long while.

We really only had one defensive stinker all season, and that was in Pullman against a good WSU offense.

When we went on the 2018 Championship run it was ranked in the 60s in the FCS. Which isn't great but compared to now its twice as good.

With our former high powered, no huddle, score quick offense it worked fine because all they had to do was "bend, don't break" get key stops and get as many turnovers as possible. Basically, get the ball back to the offense.

Now with Best converting the offense to run heavy, play action pass, pro type offense, we're going to need at least a top 30 defense to be successful. He can't even field a mid level defense, which in my mind is grounds for firing but I'm not the AD. I think Best started realizing this and opened up the play book mid season and started taking shots downfield.

I don't think this bodes will for the team. People like LDopa are like, "We have a good offense, we just need the defense to improve" when there is every indication the offense will regress with most of the starting olinemen graduating, Chism graduating and now our passing QB leaving.

Agreed, defense must improve dramatically because we won't have a good offense next year barring some unforeseen circumstances like a transfer QB/WR etc.

If Jacobie James and Anthony Stell would have stayed our receiving Corps would have been pretty good this past season . You guys are all on point, with Chism gone, who do we have as an offensive threat at WR? I don't see anyone one guy who can dominate a defense.

What's weird is Eastern made a habit of putting bigger and taller receivers on the field for a very long time. We had a lot of success with that formula. Our starting receivers by the end of the season were all below 6'. That said, you could tell by that point in the season we were gonna hang our hat on running the ball. I really don't care whether our offense is run-heavy or pass-heavy, and in many ways, being run-heavy has more advantages.

However, I suspect our offense will once again be decent next season. But if we can't stop anything on the other side of the ball, it's all moot.

Fun stuff. Keeler at Temple, Stepsis (Drake HC) now the No. Iowa Panther HC.... I liked Stepsis for the Eags, but you snooze, you lose. Never liked Schmedding but he did have the Eagles above the mendoza line statistically (under 100 ranking) Hard to believe that would be an upgrade given the collapse at Wazzzu. Am laughing imagining how much larger Eck will get eating Albequerque tortillas and the like... I say he gains 40lbs coaching the lobos.

I missed it, did Best sign his fat, dumb and happy extension?

Best signed the extension a couple years back. It was a gift from Lynn before she left. Runs through 2027 season. New AD did eliminated the next rollover extension when he came on board.

Hiring an OC that could potentially take over as head coach would be a nice back up plan. The only people on the list that could serve as OC that have head coaching experience are Chris Fisk, Jim McElwain and Beau Baldwin. Fisk making the most sense.

With Best's current record I think it's fair that AD Collins has a say on the new OC hire. In a previous comment I mentioned Baldwin but Fisk or a D2 head coach makes the most sense.

I'm fine with smaller speedsters. Yall forget Nsimba Webster. Wortham is decent lined up at receiver. Limo-Jones was sooo slow, only advantage he had was being so tall.
