Potential Head Coaches

One thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is the $1.5 million payout settlement to the former women's basketball coach who sued for wrongful termination. I'm not sure who's on the hook to pay that one...maybe the state, or maybe there's insurance or whatever. Lynn Hickey left us with that gift. She should not have been fired. Anyway, glad we have a new AD.

This was also a joint lawsuit Wendy Schuller and women's successful soccer coach Chad Bonar. Hickey took an assistant coach from both of them and they complained and Hickey wanted them gone. Not sure of details but Bodnar has since passed away. Perhaps his estate still has lawsuit going on.

FYI- This is from a SR article dated 11-30-2024

Best received the vote of confidence from EWU athletics director Tim Collins last week. Best is also under contract through the 2027 season.
According to a copy of the contract obtained by The Spokesman-Review through a public record’s request, Best signed his most recent contract in June 2021, canceling and superseding a previous contract he signed in February 2019 that ran for five years, through February 2024. The terms of this new deal continued until February 2026, making it a five-season contract that ran through the 2025 football season.

But the contract also contains an automatic rollover extension clause that is activated each February. That occurred in February 2022 and again in February 2023, Collins said. Collins replaced retiring athletics director Lynn Hickey in summer 2023.

Collins said he gave written notice, per the parameters of the contract, to end the rollover clause following Eastern’s 2023 season, giving the current contract a termination date of Feb. 28, 2028.

So the contract extends itself automatically by 5 years every February? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Collins probably came in and was like "Wtf is this?!" Seems between firing Schuller and Bodnar and this Hickey was a real shitty AD. I'm no expert but I wouldn't give Nick Saban that contract.

So Best has two more years after this season under contract? Which means his buddy Anderson stays as OC and QB's coach(as QB coach...really?.

Any chance Best could have been thinking if he put Schakel in earlier this season and he did as good as it appears he would have looked good...then Schakel would disappear next season like Wortham did for NIL money?... and to a winning team with a real QB coach? I mean everyone at practice saw him everyday and had to know what we now know. Bet you ask the players they knew...no doubt about it.

Shackel parents probably are thinking they have to get their son outta here if he is gonna get smashed the fc up every game...and for what? Things have to change in this environment if we are going to attract good players and keep them and that means $$$(nil ect)...full stop. Collins is fully aware and season ticket sales are down and will perhaps go down again next year till we start winning and are competitive. Winning the next two games may stop the bleeding.

I don't think Schakel leaves until he's made a name for himself. He needs one good season under his belt. One good game doesn't make him a hot commodity. I don't think even doing well in the last two will do that. Wortham had Big Sky accolades to show off. Visperas was the most efficient QB in the FCS last year at Eastern.

It is crazy though that our QBs coach has ZERO experience though. Even less than that of the guys he is coaching. I don't think we can afford nor would it be legal to get another coach. I think VA coached up EB3 a few times maybe we need something like that.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it anywhere but the OC's red zone play calling is atrocious.

I really hope the reason that Shackel didn't play earlier was because it took awhile to learn the offense. If he was outplaying starters in practice and still not getting playing time I wouldn't fault him for leaving. The time commitment required to be a successful QB is significant, he should be rewarded with playing time when/ if he demonstrated he was the best option.

i don't get the sense that he's the sort of kid to bail. Now, maybe after he's academically graduated with a year of eligibility could be a different story. People forget the the guys who have transferred (Adams, Gubrud, Wortham) were all graduates. We've generally done a fairly decent job of retaining high performers with a few exceptions. Anything is possible but I think all of this talk about NIL, etc. etc. is a bit premature. He still has a long way to go to even get to that point.

Weird how I post about the Weber State head coach being fired mid season and everyone ignores it and talks about Schakel. Isn't the first time this has happened. I think I'll just make them their own thread from now on since apparently people only read the last few comments. Sounds good @EWURanger ?

So no thoughts of the Weber State head coach being fired mid season on his third under performing season?
