Lindy's is kind of a joke. I have a hard time taking any list that has 4 OVC teams in the top 25 very seriously.

Isn't Chattanooga in the OVC?
 
Chattanooga is in the SoCon.

I'd imagine any future rankings will be influenced to a degree with the news that QB Daniel Sams from Kansas State is transferring to McNeese State. It also appears as though Dorial Green-Beckham will sit out this year instead of going to Eastern Illinois as has been previously rumored.
 
I do not think Cal Poly deserves a preseason ranking coming off a 6-6 record, but I believe they will be ranked by the end of the season. Two of the six losses were to FBS schools and two were games they could/should of won against Montana and NAU. I believe Cal Poly will be a better team in 2014.

I agree. Cal Poly always seems to get the shaft in rankings, but it isn't much of a surprise after a 6-6 season. It won't take much for Cal Poly to be a playoff team, you guys just had a lot of tough breaks last year. I really think you guys win your FBS bout this year!
 
I Eastern only lost one OL during the UW game in 2011. Eastern opened with three road games and lost them all that season. The UW game was fine, going on the road after a tough loss and heading to South Dakota was a dumb thing to do and an utter disaster. Eastern lost 3 starters against UM in game three and lost Zach Johnson and Brandon Kaufman the following week against Montana State.

The scheduling that year killed the team, but it wasn't the UW game where it all went wrong.

It's nice getting ranked #1 but it doesn't mean much if you have a losing record a week before the season even starts for everyone else. The #1 ranking might be okay if you're in the FBS need it to make a bowl game. I guess the #1 ranking has a good publicity value just like the red turf.
With the game against the Huskies and if we lose (as expected) what will that do to a #1 ranking?
It will be interesting to look back to at the end of the season to see how much value that #1 ranking has.

We lost in 2011 and maintained the #1 ranking. I think in those situations, a lot of it is about how we play them, and if we beat SHSU, who should start the season ranked in the FCS top 25, and at least play competitively against UW, I don't see us being penalized in the polls much, if at all.

I don't have time to look, but does anyone remember what happened to our ranking after losing to Toledo last year.

But as you mentioned, it's really nothing more than something for football hungry fans to talk about, and if it gets us some press, as it already has, I'm all for it!
 
Eastern absolutely MUST be 2-0 after the two home games to start the season. 3-1 should be the measure through the first four. We'll be in great shape taking 3 of those first 4, and I'd feel pretty comfortable about the chances of making the playoffs and maybe even a third straight conference title.
