I think 9-2 is possible, but what no one has mentioned is our running game. It needs to improve if we're going to win the conference or even make the playoffs. Right now our leading rusher is our QB and that can't continue. We need to find more balance to create more favorable matchup for our great WR's.

I know the coaches are really high on Custer, and think he's the future. The unfortunate thing is that we haven't been a good run blocking team for a long time. It'll take a bit of change in system for us to be a solid running team. Our OL is based on big guys with reach who can pass block, and it doesn't seem to be translating into guys who can get off the line and generate push.

I disagree. Although we tend to be up and down, us not having a rush game for a long time is innacurate. 2010, 2013, and 2014 were all solid rushing seasons for the eags. 2015 seems to have been a down year, but our offense in general was down in comparison to other years.

Our rushing struggles can easily be attributed to a very green offensive line. They will get better, and our rushing yards will go up.

Where we really might see a seismic shift in offense is next season when we return our whole OL but lose Hill and Kupp. That might be an opportunity to change scheme a bit and make Custer and Pierce more of a feature duo.
OMG you failed to mention Bourne. He will be graduating as well and as big an impact as losing Shaq and to a lesser degree Kupp.

Jeezus, I didn't mention him because I thought he was a junior! I had to look it up. Wow, the older I get, the quicker time flies by.

Yes, fair enough... but I meant to say we haven't really been a running offense since 2010. Forte had a couple of good years in there, but he was never part of a running group that was a "feature" group. He was more of a method of augmenting our passing game by offering a different dimension. It's conceivable that next year we could become more of a run-first offense.

Fair enough. We will need some serious speed to get back to the 2010 level again. It's hard to draw the talent at running back that Taiwan brought to the table. For now, we are a pads first offense and if we can manage 4 - 4.5 ypc I am happy.

It's like another passing of the "Big 3" from the receiving ranks. Next up, Stiles, Splendorio, and...Jayson Williams? I don't know who it will be, but I know there are multiple other young players that should step up. It sucks to think of Kupp, Bourne, and Shaq leaving after the same season!

Terence Grady and Simba Webster, of course ;)

Also, I'm surprised Zach Eagle hasn't been able to work his way into the rotation during his time as an Eagle. He was touted as one of the fastest and most talented receivers in his recruiting class. He even looked good during is freshman scrimmages. But, he is short, and that might be hampering his ability to compete. I wonder if he will at least be returning kicks next year... but that seems to be falling on Webster.

Also, speaking of possible WR emergence, I expect Kedrick Johnson to hit the scene next year. I think in other years he could have redshirted, but we are so loaded at WR that there was no need.

He is 6-3 and fast.... very fast. Can't say for sure, because we haven't seen much from him, but I think he deserves a tiny smidgeon of hype ;)

Looks like they have him projected as a DB, but who knows. Xavier James is another guy RSing this year that could be really good.

Interesting. I missed that bit of news. He was the WR of the 2016 class that I liked the most. He had a lot of measurables that could lead him to success. My guess is he just doesn't have the hands to make it as a WR at EWU, so they made him a DB. He is going to be a fantastic addition to the defense, though.

I also thought Tamarick was going to be the top RB of that class. All well, I guess this is why they don't pay me the big bucks

Isn't that Paul Sorensons definition of a DB, a receiver that can't catch?

I figured James would be staying at WR. I thought we were able to flip him from Montana because we'd let him stay at receiver while Montana wanted him as a DB. Did something change?

Unless I missed something, I think we are talking about Kedrick switching to DB.

Yup, James was recruited to play WR...Johnson is the guy that's listed as a DB.

Gotcha, looks like I read too fast.

Well, we've lost a couple games to UC Davis and Northern Colorado types in the recent past. 3-1 is an awesome start. It would be devastating to lose one of these next three because we don't have our head screwed on.

2012 Southern Utah comes to mind.

Exactly. This UC Davis game feels like a trap game. I hope we come out tomorrow and play well in all three facets.

Such a worry wart. :kisswink: Legitimately, this team's early season record has put the target squarely back on EWU and teams like UC Davis will likely show up looking to knock the Eag's of their lofty perch. Good luck with that.

Haven't seen anything in this team that suggests they will be this distracted. Sideline behavior is WAY more focused than last season and a big indicator of maturity. Past years issues are not a leading indicator of future behaviors unless it is a coaching issue which is one of the only contiguous aspects of a program. Ya'll are out of control turning a predict the record thread into a who replaces who next year thread. Gonna focus on the now, which is pretty GREAT.
